Title: "Look At You" - Hanson (you read it!)
After nearly three months with the Pussycat Dolls and more modeling gigs in LA, I was so satisfied and happy with my careers that I couldn't wait to see what was headed my way next. One of the girls Hazel, a.k.a. one of my sisters, had grown up in the Vegas area and quickly became my partner in crime. We did everything together from sharing a house, to partying, to scoping out guys. I had had many flings while in Vegas but there was never anything (or anyone) that was permanent. In our free time, Hazel and I visited her friends that still lived on the outskirts and I loved them all. They were all my type of people. We all shared the same taste in music (an eclectic one) and loved doing the same things. I had found a good home and a good life for myself. And what made it all even sweeter was that I did it all by myself and I felt proud.
After I stepped out of the shower, Hazel came into the bathroom.
"Want to go to a concert tonight?" she asked me as she unceremoniously pulled her pants down and plopped onto the toilet.
"Uh, sure I guess," I said as I combed out my wet hair. "Who's playing?"
"I don't know, it's a friend of Janis's friends' band. They just got a record deal and are doing their first show, like ever," she replied. I snorted.
"Wow, so I'm assuming they are going to suck." I said. Hazel laughed.
"Yeah, you know, most likely. But it'll be fun, I heard there are like five parties after, so it should be worth it. One of them has got to be good and there should be some sexy ass punk boys there." She added.
"Oh cool." I said sarcastically. "Another scene band for the girlies to obsess over and put on the cover of Popstar! where they probably don't belong." I said.
"Oh shut up, if the music is good, who cares?" She said. I shrugged.
We got ready in no hurry and we were out the door by six. It takes about an hour to get to Janis's house and when we got there she was waiting for us.
"Hurry, bitches! Get in the car, we are late!" she cried out as we got in the backseat of her car and drove silently to the place where the concert was being held. We were all shocked when we got there, there had to be at least 200 people there.
"I thought you said they had never played a show before?" Hazel asked Janis, bewildered. She nodded.
"They haven't. They just have really big local following and are pretty popular on the internet." She replied.
"Um, I've never heard of them...I can't even remember what you told me they are called." Hazel replied.
"Panic! At the Disco." Janis said. "You asked me that every time I mentioned tonight." She added.
As we approached the crowd, I began to sweat a little. I did not fit in here. I was dressed head to toe in Abercrombie and American Eagle, these people were not.
"Um, I feel out of place, just slightly." I said. I looked around and a few girls were sort of glaring at me. I had an urge to tell them that I was one of them, I just didn't look the part, but I decided to try and ignore it instead.
"Yeah, tell me about it," said Hazel, who herself looked like she just walked out of an Armani ad. Janis quickly spotted her friend who was friends with the band and introduced us. He seemed nice and was apparently really excited about the prospect of his friend having a record deal.
We were standing way off to the left side of the stage in the front row with Janis's friends when the show started. It went okay, I really enjoyed their music but they definitely could have used some more practice plus they seemed incredibly nervous.
"They are kind of cute for some emo kids, huh?" Janis asked Hazel and me. I shrugged.
"Eh, not my type, Jan." Hazel said. I laughed and turned to Ben, the guy was friends with the band.
"When is their album coming out?" I asked him. He smiled at me.
"November. Are you going to get it?" he asked. I nodded and smiled.
"Definitely, they sound like the album will be really good." I said.
"Wanna meet them?" he asked. I tugged on Hazel's sleeve. I gave a look that said I wanted to meet them and she had no choice but to come with me.
"Ugh, fine." Hazel said. I smiled. Then I turned and smiled at Ben. He nodded, told us to follow him and as we were walking back we grabbed Janis and drug her with us. When we got "backstage", the room was filled with people who were obviously friends of the band and they all stopped talking and started at Hazel and me.
"Um, maybe this was a bad idea. Thanks though," I said to Ben as Hazel and I began to walk away from the awkward situation.
"No, stay." A voice said from on the floor a few feet away. I looked down to see a semi-attractive boy, about 16, yanking off a tie.
"No, I really think we should get home..." Hazel replied quickly as she grabbed my arm and pulled me along. I immediately wrenched away from her grip and gave her death stare.
"You're so rude." I said to her quietly. She glared right back at me.
"We don't fit in here, so let's go. People we know and who like us are in the city, not here." she spat back at me.
"I don't tend to discriminate," we heard a voice say behind us. I turned to see the boy from the floor looking at us. He had brown hair and intense brown eyes. He was unconventional looking, but attractive enough. "Don't worry about them, if you guys are here, then why not stay." The boy said, looking directly at Hazel. I looked at her and grinned as to say, 'he wants you, haha'.
"I'm Tinsley." I said to him as I stuck my hand out. As he shook it I said, "And this is my friend Hazel. Excuse her rudeness." He smiled.
"Like your eyes." He added. I stifled my laughter because I could feel Hazel rolling her eyes. "I'm Brendon."
"Charmed." She said stiffly. Brendon cleared his throat and looked as though he was searching for words.
"So...um...you girls are from the city?" he attempted as someone called his name from across the room. "Sorry." He said as he left. Hazel exhaled loudly.
"Christ. Let's get out of here please," she began, but I barely heard her. My eyes landed on a boy, around my age, sitting by himself in the corner of the room. He had shoulder length hair and hollow brown eyes, like he's seen too much life in such a short time. He was fidgeting with guitar strings and appeared to be deep in thought. I suddenly found myself wondering what he was thinking about. I recognized that he was playing guitar in the band I just saw. Maybe he was thinking about how is life might change. Maybe he was thinking about any mistakes he made on stage. Maybe he was merely singing a song in his head. Either way I wanted to know.
"Hello?" Hazel said. I shook my head.
"I'll be right back..." I told her as I started walking over to the boy. I watched him from a short distance for a second before I sat down next to him. He stopped fidgeting and looked at me. I smiled at him, "good show tonight. I'm looking forward to the CD coming out." He peered at me from his guitar. His eyes told me to leave him alone.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt." I added. He shrugged then went back to fidgeting. I went quiet. What was he thinking? After what felt like an hour, but was more likely a few minutes, he stopped and stared straight ahead with his unfeeling eyes.
"I know my life is never going to be the same if this works out how I want it to." He said so quietly I almost didn't here him.
"Well, maybe it's me, but I like to shake things up. Life gets too boring if you stay in one place too long doing the same old thing." I replied. He looked over at me. After a minute he smiled.
"You stick out like a sore thumb around here." He said with his quiet voice. He sounded like he was stuck somewhere. Something in his voice, in his actions, let me know about what was inside. He had definitely seen too much life.
"I know. It's okay thought, as long as I get to talk to you. I'm Tinsley." I said. He looked back at his guitar and help on to it, as if it was his security blanket and as long as he hid behind it, he was safe. "Ryan."
"Well, Ryan, if you don't mind me prying, what is going in that mind?"
"More than you'll ever know. That's why I like this and why I'm looking forward to getting out and on tour, I can forget about me for a while and just concentrate on the music." I nodded. I didn't really know what else to say and luckily my phone started singing. It was Hazel telling me to wrap it up. I sighed. We had just started talking.
"I gotta go. Hazel, my friend over there," I pointed to her, "is a little impatient. I hope to see you again sometime, Ryan." He nodded slowly.
"See you. Thanks."
"Sure. Well, bye."
Slowly i truged away from him toward Hazel who looked five ways to frazzled.
"Um...you okay?"
"That Brendon kid MADE me take his number and promise to come see them rehearse tomorrow. I never want to see these people again. They suck and are a little to....um....annoying."
I smiled. "We're going."
