Smurfs and Snappers and Bears! Oh My!
On this very day, seven and a half smurfs decided we were mad enough for the challenge, errwell, on the other hand maybe some of us simply did not quite realize what we were in for. We set out on a Friday morning to hike up into the Jersey Highlands and find Surprise Lake for some bare swimming.
With the automobiles parked, Mother Smurf (aka Beth Nolan) directed us down the long steep road to locate the trail head. About two hundred yards down the road Mama Smurf determined to lead us back up the hill to locate the trail head. Already dripping with sweat some of us joked about jumping in the water and calling it a day, but we carried on.
But we stopped two or three times to catch our breath.
"So, it is not far from here then Mom Smurf?"
"We need to cross the top of the ridge first then we will be there," replied Mom Smurf.
Ahead we set across the ridge. A big black bear discontinued about 40 yards away to look back at us for a number of instants. Perhaps he was only camera shy.
"How much further Mama Smurf?"
"We're about half way there," said Mom Smurf.
A little further on, profuse sweatingcheck..fatiguecheck..frissons and goose bumpscheck. I understood my body was over heated after I began getting goose bumps in 90 degree temperatures. The ridge was covered with places of tree coverage and open places. Every time we hit an open area the sun beat right down. By then everyone wanted a great rest, so we made an additional long stop.
"Is it much farther Mother Smurf?"
"YES IT IS!!!!" cried Mother Smurf.
Mama Smurf did not really yell at us, but before we were done I believe we all nagged her at least once. Given the horrid temperatures it was quite a trying two miles across the ridge and we were all over heated and exhausted. When we eventually made it to the lake, none of us thought twice.

During our lunch break in the shade, a very inquisitive snapping turtle came right up to visit us. It was tremendous; its shell must happen to be over 15 inches in diameter. He remained for quite a while posing for our pictures. After he left, we went for one last skinny dip with some trepidation. Suffice it to say, some of us were less than enthused about offering up a wienerschnitzel snack to our buddy.
With two guide books among us, we discovered there was a shorter trail back to civilization. So we began trekking back. As we came over a hill top I seen a rock ledge. "Oh boy, I saw that rock ledge and presumed it was a road. I believed we were saved." I said. "So did I," laughed Mother Smurf. We trudged along when the new ridge opened up into a stunning view. An attractive panorama of Greenwood Lake was beneath lined with lake front mansions and boats zipping up and down the lake. Without presuming we all stopped to take in the view. Ultimately we continued on, and before long we made it back down the incline to the world.

Despite the sore legs, mild heat exhaustion, and a certain marshy backside the attempts of the day proved worth the challenge. In the end, how frequently do you really get to see giant snapping turtles, wild black bears, and scenic views from atop a mountain ridge? And do not forget the bare swimming / skinny dipping also!
