I would not have graduated high school without your help!
"I would not have graduated high school without your help!"
She was a senior taking Algebra 2 . . . AGAIN!
She failed the subject twice before and, without a "C" grade or better, she could not graduate from high school. She was angry, bitter, and resistant to my direction or support. Until she got mad enough, hurt enough, and felt desperate enough, she would not listen to me. So, I allowed her to be late to lessons, storm through the assignments, and leave early because she "had something else more important to do." When she was tired of failing, tired of crying, and tired of being tired, she was ready to learn.
And, learn she did. Before I worked with her, no other teacher had taken the time to teach her how to monitor the process of solving a problem. She didn't have trouble with the concepts or details of Algebra 2. She needed help with study skills. She needed to learn how to complete a problem, how check her work, and how to assess her confidence level in her work before checking the answer key. I taught her what I call my "two-column method."
Step one is to work the problem out on one side of a two-columned paper. Step two is to re-work the problem on the second side of the paper, but with the original work covered up. Step three is to compare the work. Step four is to assess the level of confidence in each answer, and then choose an answer.
With my feedback, she learned to trust her natural math abilities, strengthened her confidence, and reduced the number of frequent errors likely to happen in very long Algebra 2 problems. She passed the class with a "C," but gained more than a grade. She was confident in her math skills and study skills.
She wrote me a sweet card. "Dear Ms. J., I would not have been able to graduate high school without your help. It would mean an awful lot to me if you would come to my graduation."
