I wouldn't put it past the ol' brainless bearded wonder blunder to've set the entire thing up. Now the next thing to really foul up the ol' brainless bearded wonder blunder's plans would be to prevent the Longbottoms form being attacked. Or failing that get there soon after them and kill all the Death Eaters. After all, the only good Death Eater, is a dead Death Eater.
