Chapter 5: Interlude

No-one to talk with, all by myself,
No one to walk with, but I'm happy on the shelf.
Ain't misbehavin', I'm savin' my love for you.

I know for certain the one I love
I'm through with flirtin', it's just you I'm thinkin' of,
Ain't misbehavin', I'm savin' my love for you.

Like Jack Horner in the corner,
don't go nowhere, what do I care,
Your kisses are worth waitin' for!

I don't stay out late, don't care to go
I'm home about eight, just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin', I'm savin' my love for you.

"Mmm. That's nice!"

"I don't know where Jiraiya picked it up, so don't ask me who Little Jack Horner is."

"I'll bet he doesn't make it sound anywhere near as pretty as you do."

"Well, that isn't really all that difficult."

Sakura settled her head comfortably on Kakashi's shoulder. He sat with his back up against a tree, his knees drawn up. She sat between his legs, leaning back against him. He had taken his mask off and had been singing to her in his soft, light baritone, his lips barely touching her ear, which sent a shiver down her spine and made her feel all girly. No one else knew he had such a pleasant singing voice. It didn't quite go with the whole laid back badass persona. He reserved it for her.

Kakashi silently regarded the girl cuddled against his chest. When he first met that trio of urchins some three years ago, never, ever in a million years would he have imagined the little pink-haired one would one day dance right past his cool façade and so completely work her way into his heart.

Like everyone else, he had assumed Sakura was still carrying a torch for Sasuke. But she had made it very clear to him that although she was still very fond of the Uchiha boy, and was still determined to release him from Orochimaru's tender mercies while there was still time, she was bound, heart and soul, to Kakashi. He smiled and kissed her lightly on the top of her head. Now he couldn't imagine it any other way.

"So what happened next?" Sakura asked after a short, companionable silence.

"Oh, yeah. Well, when Jiraiya was told to leave, I tried to get Genma to take him home, but he claimed he was incapacitated."

"How? Did he swallow his senbon?"

Kakashi chuckled evilly. "Just about. So I had to get Iruka to give me a hand. He looked like he would rather have chewed his own leg off."

"Poor Iruka-sensei."

"Yes, well, we got him on the drunk cart and took him back to his inn. I got a couple of the workers there to pour him into bed with a barf bucket close at hand, and that's where I left him."

"What an awful story!" Sakura said, then giggled. "Are you going to get all fat and drunk when you get old?"

"Not if you don't drive me to it," Kakashi teased her, wrapping his arm around her head and growling in her ear. Sakura gave a little squeal and pushed his arm away. He wrapped both his arms around her, pinning her against him.

"Knock it off!" she ordered, struggling in his grip and trying not to laugh. "Pervert!"

"Brat!"

"Cradle robber!"

"Jail bait!"

They both laughed and settled back again, his arms still draped around her. They had managed to steal away unnoticed for a while to share some precious time alone. Although they had come very near to it a number of times, they had not gone as far as consummating their relationship.

Kakashi often had to remind himself and Sakura that no matter how much they wanted each other, she was still only fifteen, and despite his usual choice of reading material and the teasing that she gave him for it, he was not a pervert. He added, somewhat grimly, that in his lifetime he'd seen shit that would steal her innocence away faster and with less compunction than he ever could.

Besides, they both knew that if Tsunade found out-and she had ways of doing that-her rage would be incalculable, they would probably not be allowed to see each other. Other consequences did not bear thinking about.

So for now, anyway, they had to be content with meeting in secret, wrapped in each other's arms, teasing each other verbally and physically, managing to keep their desperate longing and their deep devotion balanced on a razor's edge.

"I'm happy for them," Sakura said wistfully.

"Who?"

"You know. Naruto and Hinata and Iruka and Ayame."

"You're not jealous?"

"I didn't say that. But not everybody has to be miserable just because I am."

"Hmm!" He brushed his lips against her cheek. "Are you really miserable?"

Sakura gave a sigh. "Sometimes." Not for the first time, she felt the sting of tears beginning to form, and she turned to bury her face against his neck.

"Hey," Kakashi whispered soothingly. He gently tangled his fingers in her hair and kissed her forehead. He knew what was coming.

"It's not fair!" Her small, plaintive voice sounded muffled.

Kakashi sighed. "I know it isn't," he said finally. He lifted her chin and she looked up at him with that green, sorrowful gaze that cut right into his heart even in the moonlight. "We knew this wasn't going to be easy. I can't even begin to tell you how much I want you. But it's more important to me to be able to be with you, even if it's just like this and in secret. I would rather wait than be separated."

She looked at him in silence for a while, then gave a reluctant nod. "I know. Me, too."

He bent his head down and kissed her forehead, her eyelids, then her mouth.

"I love you so much," she whispered against his lips.
Kakashi smiled and whispered back, "I love you, too, cherry blossom."

They kissed again. She reached up and slid her hand behind his neck, pulling them closer. He slipped his hand under the edge of her blouse, and her stomach muscles tensed as she felt his fingers lightly caressing her bare skin.

A twig snapped somewhere and they heard distant voices. They both sat upright, frozen, straining their ears to catch any other sounds. They heard the voices again, a bit closer this time.

"Son of a /bitch/!" Sakura spat out in an angry, frustrated whisper. "Who the hell could that be?"

Kakashi leaned to one side to look around the tree. They were in a little hollow in a heavily wooded area. Beyond the nearby rise was a road, and across the road was the Hyuuga clan home.
"Whoever it is, they're coming through the woods, so I don't think it would be Naruto walking Hinata home. They'd probably stick to the road." He turned back to her. "Better make yourself scarce, precious."

"But we hardly had any time!" Sakura whispered back unhappily. "Dammit! It's not-"

He pressed his lips against hers in a firm, brief kiss. "We'll try to meet up later, all right? I'm going to check this out."
Sakura nodded reluctantly, and with one last, quick kiss, she slipped off silently into the shadows. Kakashi rested his head against the tree momentarily, trying to calm himself down a little after their interrupted moment. Whoever that is had better have a damn good excuse!

AN: I have been trying to think of a singer who Kakashi would sound like. It would have to be a really smooth, mellow voice. I first thought maybe Harry Connick, Jr., but his voice was just a little too high. If anyone has any suggestions, pass them along!
