“I have been thinking . . . “ said Luna, as she wandered through eternity with her loved ones. “All those things we did when we were alive . . . we got so much of it wrong . . . what if we could go back?”
“This man has told you before, it is wrong to bring the dead back!” signed Creb.
“Besides, who has the ring to call us back now?” asked Ayla.
“I’m not talking about going back as resurrected spirits of the dead,” protested Luna. “What if there was a way to send our memories back to when we were younger? We could live all our lives again, only do it better.”
“If our memories go back to inhabit our younger bodies, what will happen to our younger selves?” signed Iga.
“We would have to go back to a time when we were near death, most of us have nearly died at least once. If we go back to such a time, our younger self’s spirit can move on and take our place here,” explained Luna.
“I want no part of this!” growled Thonlan. “You promised! You promised you would never bring me back again!”
“I want to go back,” announced Jetamio. “I want a chance for us to raise our child together.”
After much discussion, the group decided who would and would not go back. Since Creb was the oldest, he would be going back the furthest into the past. Others, if they were willing, would join him at a later date, when their lives had reached that pivotal juncture of life and death in balance.

Creb screamed as the Cave Bear bit down into his arm! It had worked, he was back in the past, at a time when his life hung in the balance. But he didn’t have time to think about that. All he could pay attention to was the searing pain as Mighty Urus held Creb in his maw, his claw dug into Creb’s face, while the other mauled his club-footed leg. Creb was losing consciousness from shock and blood loss as the Cave Bear dropped Creb to turn on his attacker. Creb caught a glimpse of his Mother’s mate stabbing the Cave Bear with a Spear before the blackness claimed him . . .

“Luna . . .” said Creb as he drifted back into consciousness. He opened his eye to be greeted by the sight of his Mother, Uba. His sister had named her daughter after her. But it had been a long time since he had seen his mother alive.
“Mother!” signed Creb with his remaining arm.
“Rest. Just rest,” commanded Creb’s mother, the Medicine Woman, Uba.
She poked and prodded and asked him to move various limbs as she examined her son.
“How is he?” asked Uba’s mate, Brac.
“It is too soon to tell if he will live,” reported Uba. “This Medicine Woman had to remove what was left of his arm. Ursus had nearly bitten it off. Even if the leg recovers, he still has that club foot. He also lost one of his eyes.”
Brac nodded to acknowledge his mate’s report, then walked away from his hearth, waving at the other men to gather them and lead them away. He walked out of the cave, past the group of women who were rendering the dead Cave Bear and out of sight of the cave.
Sometime later, the men returned. Brac went straight to his hearth to speak with his mate, who was still tending to her oldest son, Creb, while her youngest, baby Brun, nursed.
“This Leader has decided,” began Brac. “Brun will be Leader after this man. If Creb recovers, Borg will train him to be his acolyte.”
Uba nodded to acknowledge her mate’s statemen, relief showing on her face. She had feared that her mate would order to let Creb die. It was fortunate that the mog-ur’s mate had no children. If he became mog-ur, Creb might still contribute to the welfare of the Clan.
Creb let himself drift back to sleep. Everything had happened as he remembered it. Nothing had changed . . .
