Chapter 7: another Clan Gathering

Having hunted and stored enough to make it through the Winter, Brun felt safe in leading his Clan to the Clan Gathering. He placed his son, Broud, at the end of the procession to guard the women of the Clan from behind. Between Creb’s club foot and Dorv’s advanced age the two of them slowed down the Clan to a pace that the women had no difficulty keeping up with. When they arrived at the Clan Gathering, There were a few impolite stares at Creb and at Vara and her sons. Their mixed Other’s heritage caused them to look ‘deformed’ in the eyes of the members of other Clans. And Creb was viewed both with pity, due to his deformity and Ursus injuries, but also with awe because of the events at the previous Clan Gathering where he had risen to become the Mog-Ur, displacing the flute-playing mog-ur whose line had long held the title before Creb.

At the previous Clan Gathering, Creb had introduced the idea of giving Needs to women and Relieving them. Although this had spread to all the Clans and the men in those Clans were capable of performing this Need Relieving for their mates, the women in the other Clans still had an interest in The Mog-Ur who had started this and were constantly enticing Creb to give them the Signal. This was especially true for those women whose mate had refused to adopt the new fad of giving women Needs and Relieving them. By now, Creb had grown used to women constantly trying to entice him. It had been going on in his home Clan ever since he first mated Aba and had happed at the previous Clan Gathering. But it was quite a contrast to his previous life where he had endured years of chastity until Luna arrived.

The men who could combine magic with sling use did not compete in the sling competition as they thought it would be unfair. This raised the Standing of Brun’s Clan, especially after the weez-ur staged an exhibition of magical sling use. It wasn’t a competition none of the men who could used magic ever missed so there was no way for them to compete. But they impressed the other Clans with their ability to hit multiple targets and to sling stones at supersonic speeds.

In the official sling competition (without magic) Zoug won. Brun won the Bola and Leadership competitions. Grod won the run-and-spear competition. Iza was recognized as the First Ranked Medicine Woman. And Creb was reaffirmed as The First Ranked Mog-Ur.

Mates were found from other Clans for Brev, Vred, Zig, Lun, Droov, and Crug, who had just recently become a man. But when it came time for the brave young men to fight the Cave Bear, Brev was one of those selected and he died in the attempt. This meant that one other the Clan’s new women, Ire, would need a new mate. Brun took her on as a Second mate until Zab came of age. At the mog-ur’s ceremony Creb The Mog-Ur awed the other mog-urs with his ability to guide them through the memories and Zeen did the same in the acolyte’s ritual. Brun’s Clan left the Clan Gathering once again as the First Ranked Clan.

Brun’s Clan returned to their Cave fully provisioned with enough meat to last through the winter. Aba’s son, Lun was no longer staying at Creb’s Hearth as he now had a mate of his own. Creb’s hearth was a happy one. His mate, Aba had two children of her own, plus their adopted daughter, Droka. Abe was still very much interested in Sharing Pleasures with Creb and often enticed him to Relieve his Needs, know that he would, in turn, give here Needs and Relieve them. This made it easier to Creb to resist the other women of the Clan who were often trying to entice him to use them for Need Relieving. His Acolyte, Aba’s Son, Zeen garnered similar attention, though to a lesser degree from the women of Brun’s Clan. All in all, Creb was very happy with his life.

During the Winter Greva gave birth to a son for Krug’s hearth. Spring came early and their first hunt was very successful. They had to stop at three bison because the women could only butcher and dry a limited number of carcasses without the meat spoiling. Aba was feeling particularly amorous that day and had enticed Creb to Share Pleasures three times that day. They had both fallen asleep afterwards . . . . .

. . . When Creb first awoke, he thought his mate was shaking him awake. But he quickly realized that it was not Aba, but the whole cave that was shaking him! The Earthquake had come!

“Grab the children and take them out of the cave!” signed Creb.

Aba picked up her son, Cray, and flad the cave. The other two children: Zab and Droka were nearly adults and were able to flee on their own. Creb was not as mobile and the shaking had stopped by the time he had exited the cave.

After it was over, Brun re-entered to the cave and returned bearing a lit torch so the survivors could see his signs.

“Everyone, stay out here for now,” signed Brun. “In the morning, we will return to bury our dead and retrieve our belongings. We will need to find a new cave.”

When the sun rose, Brun’s Clan was able to re-enter the cave and assess the damage. They had lost Greda, Groda, Zig, Targ, Lun, Vera, Verga, Grek, Dona, Dek, Gren, Den, Vred, Bon, Brona, Ika, Bik, Beva, Crab, Greeb, Grorva, Greerv, Grerba, Vorg, Von, Vog, Vorc, Drasa, Drorc, Vorca, Krug and all the new women from the Clan gathering except Ire.

Once they had accessed the damage, all of the dead were buried in the cave, often using their hearth stones. Creb The Mog-Ur performed the funeral rituals, then the desanctqfication of their old cave. After all this, the Clan gathered all their belongings, Grod took a coal from the remaining fire and Brun’s Clan set out to search for a new cave.

To Keep the clan focused while they were traveling, Brun decreed that the men ad women would sleep in separate tents and the men would not be allowed to women to Relieve their Needs. It was for the best anyway. Some of the men had lost their mates, as had some of the women. There were even children who had lost both parents. Brun would have to decide the new matings as they traveled.

But Creb was not worried about this. His thoughts were of Ayla. He. Should have known the earthquake was coming when Iza’s totem got defeated! But the earthquake meant that Ayla was coming! Ayla was coming back to their Clan!
