Chapter 8: Ayla

“Aaaaahh!!”

Ayla screamed as the claws of the cave lion raked across her thigh! She pulled her leg and her whole body further into the small cave. Her back was against the deepest wall as she semi-sat/semi-squatted to keep every part of her as far from the probing claw of the cave lion that was reaching inward trying to find her. It was roaring its’ outrage at its’ failure to grasp its’ prey. The cave lion was reaching so far inward that it was blocking the light from shining into the cave. Ayla was in near total darkness as she cowered agains the wall and the cave lion continued to roar and reach for her.
After what seemed an eternity, the cave lion gave up and stopped reaching for her. The light began streaming back into the cave as the cave lion paced outside and roared its’ frustration at not being able to catch the small human. This went on for a long time before the roaring stopped.

Ayla’s heartbeet began to slow down once the roaring had stopped. She began to think more clearly as the threat to her life decreased. She had done it! Their attempt to travel back into their past lives had been successful! If she had succeeded, who else was here? Surely Creb was here by now? If she didn’t get out of the cave and go find the Clan, she’d never meet him! But she dare not leave the safety of this cave as long as the cave lion was out there! It could be out there right now, waiting to pounce on her! How long would it lie in wait? When would it be safe for her to leave?
Ayla waited for a long time as she sat in the small cave. She held her hand on her wound trying to stop the bleading. As she calmed down the pain was becoming unbearable. How long should she wait in here? She understood the danger much more than last time this had happened. Did that make her wait longer? Ayla was unsure. But she was afraid that she would miss the Clan if she waited too long.
Taking a chance, Ayla tentatively crawled from the cave. The cave lion was no where in sight. Now what? Ayla had nothing. She was completely naked. The lack of a wrap did not bother her near as much as the lack of tools. She needed to find some flint and a hammer-stone and a digging-stick. Which way was the Clan? She didn’t remember. She’d been too young the last time this had happened. She wandered over to a small stream and washed her wound out. Once this was done, she began looking for some herbs that could be used to treat her wound. She didn’t have the things she need to make a potion, but if she could find ingredients . . . She searched until she found a potentualy useful herb. She pulled the leaves off the plant and stuck them to her thigh. The blood helped them stick to the open wound. But by now she had lost a lot of blood. She was starting to had trouble concentrating, becoming delerious . . . . She continued to wander until she passed out, lying there on a deer path in the forest.

Creb attempted to keep up with the Clan as he hobbled with the aid on this staff. He had hoped to use his disability as an excuse to fall back so he could be behind Iza when they found Ayla. But he was too high ranked, compared to his childhood. When Creb The Mog-Ur slowed down, everyone behind him slowed down too. So he stopped trying to fall back and instead tried to keep up with Brun the Leader. He feared that this time Iza would not ask to save the young girl of the Others. He couldn’t take that chance. So when the Clan passed the sprawled girl of the Others, Creb took action.

“Brun!” Called out Creb, trying to get the attention of the Leader of their Clan.

“What is it Creb?” Signed Brun after he turned to address the Clan’s Mog-Ur.

“Look!” Said Creb as he pointed to the body of Ayla.

“She is Others, she is not Clan,” observed Brun.

“She is injured!” Signed Creb. “If a Clan girl were found by the Others, we would want them to aid her.”

Brun pondered for a moment before taking action.

“Iza!” Barked Brun, causing their heavily pregnant Medicine Woman to rush forward. “There is a girl of the Others. What is her condition?”

Iza checked over the young girl of the Others, trying to determine her condition before seating at Brun’s feet to make her report. He tapped her on the shoulder and she began.

“The girl is hot, hotter than a Clan girl should be,” reported Iza to Brun, who did not know the Medicine Woman concept of a fever. “Her wound has made her sick.”

“Can she be saved?” Asked Creb.
“This Medicine Woman is uncertain,” replied Iza. “But this Medicine Woman would like to try. She can carry the child, herself.”

Brun nodded his assent and Iza lifted the child and tucked her into her wrap, making it easier to carry the child. As the Clan traveled, the Medicine Woman gathered the herbs she would need to treat the child. When the Clan stopped for the evening, Iza used a combination of herbs from her medicine bag and ones she had gathered today to treat the girl. The girl must have some knowlege of Medicine Woman magic, because the leaves she had stuck to her wound had been the correct ones. Iza kept treating the girl and dribled broth in her mouth to feed her when the clan would stop to rest. On the third day the girl finally awoke as the sun arose. She looked around for a moment before she spotted Iza and showed her teeth to her.

“This girl greets you,” signed Ayla.

“You can speak properly?” Signed Iza, to which the girl nodded. “This woman is called: Iza.”

“This girl is called: Ayla.”

“How did you know which leaves to put on your wound?” Asked Iza.

“This girl is trained as a medicine woman,” signed Ayla.

What followed, was a long discussion on healing techniques that allowed Iza the Medicine Woman to assess the knowledge of this girl of the Others. She also asked the girl about her people and why she was alone. Once she knew all this, Iza approached the Leader, Brun, and sat at his feet. Brun tapped her on the shoulder so she could speak.

“The woman would like to report that the girl of the Others has awoken,” signed Iza. “The girl’s name is: Ayla. She had been trained in the skills of a Medicine Woman. She lost her people when the ground shook. This woman would like to adopt her as her daughter.”

Brun nodded in a gesture that acknowledged what Iza had said but had not yet given permision to adopt the girl.

While they were traveling, the men would sleep separately from the women. The women still had to cook for the men. But there would be no Need Relieving. This served to focus the Clan on their search for their new cave. So after the evening meal, the men would hold discussions on the future before going to sleep.

“Iza has asked to adopt the girl of the Others,” mused Brun. “But Iza has no mate to provide for her. She lost her’s when the old cave shook. And Zoug is too old to provide for her.”

“This man would like to have her at his hearth,” signed Creb. “This man would offer to provide for Iza, Zoug, and the girl of the Others.”

“Iza is our sibling,” pointed out Brun.

“Which is why the man will not be asking her to Relieve his Needs,” replied Creb. “She already Relieves the Needs of Zoug. However she can help this man’s mate with all the other women’s tasks at his hearth as if she were a second mate.”

“We have several men without mates and even more women and children with no one to provide for them,” observed Brun. “Grod, you often ask permision to Signal my second mate, Ire. Would like to have her as your mate?”

Grod nodded his agreement.

“Droog, would you like my mate’s sister: Uka, as a mate?” asked Brun

“This man would rather have your sibling: Braca as a mate, signed Droog

And so, it went, as the men discussed who would mated to who in the new cave. (Once they found one)

The land was starting to look familiar to Ayla by the time the Clan stopped to make camp. This was the first opportunity for Ayla to aproach Creb.

“This Weech greats the Weez-Ur,” signed Ayla.

“You remember?” asked Creb.

“This girl remembers,“ confirmed Ayla. “This girl also remembers this land. Should this girl discover the cave again? Or would you like to do it?”

“It would raise your status if you were the one to find the cave,” replied Creb.

“Then, this girl will do so,” signed Ayla before wandering off. She joined the other children who were gathering firewood. But she wandered off in a different direction. . . . She continued walking until she found the entrance of the Clan’s cave from her past life, then, went running back to the Clan. Sitting at Brun’s feet, she waited for him to tap her on the shoulder before signing: “Cave!”

After Brun, Grod and Creb had entered the cave and returned, Brun anounced:

“The Cave is acceptable. We will have Zab’s manhood hunt. If the hunt is successful, the Clan will move into the new Cave.”

As it turned out, Zab’s manhood hunt was successful. He brought down a Bison with a Clan Spear and the help of the other hunters. After the women of the Clan butchered his kill and set the meat to drying, the men of the Clan performed a hunt dance to re-inact the kill. Then, Creb The Mog-Ur performed the ceremony to make the son of his mate a hunter of the Clan.

Once this was done, Creb then perfomed the ceremony of naming their newest member and her totem.

“The girl’s name is: Ayla!” Announced The Mog-Ur. “The girl’s totem is: Cave Lion!”

At this anouncement, the entire Clan’s hands were flying. How could the girl have such a powerful totem?

Ayla was bewildered by how different this Clan was from the one she remembered. Uka was to be Brun’s 2nd mate, not Grod’s? Aba was Creb’s mate? Iza had a sister? This was suposed to be Broud’s manhood hunt. But he was older than he should be and looked different too. There were several people who didn’t exist in her previous life. Some of them had familiar names. . . . But this Clan’s Zeen looked nothing like the son of Luna. One of these new people was Zab, the son of Creb’s mate. And he was looking at her with the same glare that Broud had after his manhood hunt.

After her naming, the men and women preformed their ceremonies. Iza tried to give her more of the datura tea so she would sleep like the other children. But Ayla had picked a mushroom that Iga had taught her about in her previous life. While waiting her turn, she chewed it up and used the datura tea to wash it down. The children were all soon asleep. Except Ayla, who lay on her furs as she watched the women dance at the women’s ritual. As she watched them they started to blur and the ground began shining with a purple iredescent light. Ayla felt one with the Clan and all the peoples of the Earth and the animals and the entire universe. She could hear the thoughts of the women vanish as their dance became more frenzied. And she could feel the men being guided back through the memories back to the time when there were women who hunt and female mog-urs.

Ayla didn’t sleep all night. So the next morning, while the women still slept, she began preparing a morning tea and breakfast for Iza, Creb, Aba and Zoug, along with Aba’s son Cray and the orphan girl: Oga, whom Ayla remembers as the mate of Broud in her previous life.

Once the rest of the Clan awoke, they began the work of preparing hearths for the various men and their families. That night, the mating ceremonies were performed for many people, most notably Zab, who was mated to Breba, the girl who had been born to Brun’s hearth the year that Broud should have been.
