Orphanage Days

The cold wind whistled through the cracks in the worn-down walls of Konoha’s orphanage, carrying the hushed whispers of caretakers and the occasional sneer from the other children. The two boys, identical in appearance yet vastly different in demeanor, sat together in the farthest corner of the room.

Naruto, legs crossed and a goofy grin on his face, playfully flicked a small pebble between his fingers. His blue eyes, filled with mischief, darted around the room in search of something, anything, to entertain himself with.

Menma, in contrast, sat still, arms crossed, staring out the window at the village beyond. His face was impassive, his cold eyes reflecting no emotion. Where Naruto thrived in chaos, Menma found solace in silence.

They had lived in this orphanage for as long as they could remember. But the place never truly felt like home. They weren’t like the other children. The villagers stares, the hushed voices, the fearful glances, the weight of it all pressed upon them even here.

Then, one night, it all came to a boiling point.

The orphanage matron, a middle-aged woman with a permanent scowl, had finally had enough.

“You two are nothing but trouble,” she spat. “We can’t have demons under this roof.”

They were barely six years old, yet even they understood the underlying message. The doors were shut behind them. They were on their own.

A Few Weeks Later

Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, found them huddled under an abandoned shop’s overhang. The rain poured down, soaking through their ragged clothes. Naruto shivered but still smiled at the old man. Menma, however, simply stared, his expression unreadable.

Hiruzen sighed. He had been searching for them for days. The village had been… less than accommodating to the boys. He had hoped the orphanage would shelter them, but that hope had been crushed.

“I’ve arranged for you two to have your own apartment,” Hiruzen said, offering a kind smile. “You’ll have food, warmth, and a place to call home.”

Naruto’s face lit up. “Whoa, really? That’s awesome! Thanks, old man!”

Menma, however, narrowed his eyes. “What’s your angle?” he asked bluntly.

Hiruzen blinked, caught off guard by the boy’s sharp intuition.

Naruto tilted his head. “What do you mean? He’s just being generous.”

Menma scoffed. “Tch. No one in this village does anything out of generosity. There’s always an ulterior motive.”

Hiruzen remained calm. “I simply want you both to be safe.”

Menma didn’t believe him, not fully. But what choice did they have? Sleeping in the streets was no longer an option.

“…Fine,” Menma finally muttered. “But don’t think I trust you.”

Naruto just grinned. “See? Told you he was nice.”

Menma rolled his eyes. “You’re too naïve.”

---

One night, as they lay on their futons in their new apartment, Naruto stared at the ceiling. His stomach was full for the first time in weeks, but his mind was restless.

“Hey, Menma,” Naruto called out.

Menma, who was sitting against the wall, didn’t respond.

“Why do you think the villagers hate us?”

Menma remained silent for a moment before finally answering, “I don’t care.”

Naruto sat up. “Huh?”

“All that matters is power,” Menma said. “People respect strength. If you’re weak, you’re nothing.”

Naruto frowned. “It’s always power this, power that with you.”

Menma turned his cold gaze toward his brother. “Because it’s the only thing that matters. Without power, you can’t protect anyone, not even yourself.”

Something about those words sent a strange sensation through Naruto. It felt… familiar, yet distant.

“…Yeah, yeah,” Naruto muttered, lying back down. But his mind kept replaying those words over and over.

---

A year later, Hiruzen informed them that they would be enrolling in the Ninja Academy.

Menma had no objections. If it meant getting stronger, he’d go.

Naruto groaned. “Ugh, school? That sounds boring.”

At the Academy, they were like night and day.

Menma excelled at everything, taijutsu, ninjutsu, even theory. His cold and efficient nature earned him admiration and rivals . Sasuke Uchiha and Kiba Inuzuka saw him as their biggest competition.

Naruto, on the other hand, slacked off at every opportunity. He slept through lessons, pulled pranks, and goofed around.

Shikamaru yawned one day while watching them. “You two are total opposites,” he muttered. “One’s a genius ice cube, the other’s a reckless idiot.”

Naruto grinned. “Yep! He’s my better half.”

Menma merely scoffed.

---

By the time they were eight, Menma had had enough of the Academy. He went straight to Hiruzen.

“Let me join the Anbu,” he demanded.

Hiruzen’s pipe nearly fell from his lips. “Absolutely not.”

Menma’s cold stare hardened. “Why not? I’m stronger than the other kids. I’m ready.”

Hiruzen sighed. “You should enjoy your childhood.”

Menma clenched his fists. “Tch. You’re holding me back.”

Hiruzen watched him carefully. Minato… Kushina… you would be heartbroken if I let him walk this path so soon.

---
Deep within Menma’s mind, he often found himself in a dark, endless void. And there, glowing red eyes peered down at him.

“Your village fears you,” the Nine-Tails’ voice rumbled. “They keep you weak.”

Menma didn’t argue. He already knew the truth.

“They will never accept you. You are a weapon to them, nothing more,” the fox continued.

Menma’s eyes narrowed. “And?”

The fox grinned. “My power is yours if you desire it.”

Menma’s gaze darkened. He wasn’t foolish. He knew this beast wanted something in return.

“I don’t need you,” Menma said coldly. “I’ll gain power on my own.”

The fox chuckled. “We shall see.”

And with that, Menma woke up, his body drenched in sweat.

Naruto snored loudly from the other side of the room.

Menma exhaled and leaned against the wall, his thoughts filled with one thing.

Power.
