I went back to work on Monday, and to my usual routine. I had answered all of my work emails and decided to check my personal account. I found two from Pete. His screen name is Pandaxo. Somehow this didn’t surprise me at all. The first was just a quick hello and a question. He wanted to know what my favorite flower was. I thought it was a bit strange but answered anyway. The second was another question. What size did I wear? Also a bit strange, so instead of answering him I asked why he wanted to know.
I went back to work and didn’t think about looking at my mail again until it was close to the end of the day. Another one from Pandaxo. He said he wanted to send me some things from his clothing line and needed to know what size he should send. I answered, but also told him he didn’t have to send me anything. Really I was wondering how in the hell I was going to explain that to Jason.
I could see it now. ‘Oh yeah, Honey. Remember that rock star I met on the plane? He sent me all of these clothes.’ Somehow I didn’t see that going over too well.
I left for the day and went home. Jason and I went about our normal lives. I didn’t hear back from Pete until the next week. Another email.
Lizzy-
I have a box ready to send to you.
But I just realized I don’t know your last name.
Or where to send it. Help me out!
;)
XO
Pete
My answer.
Pete-
O’Halloran. My last name is O’Halloran.
And work is the best place to send it.
Lizzy
I gave the address and then sent the email. I still wasn’t sure if this was a good idea, but figured he couldn’t be sending me much. Boy was I wrong. The next day I got a call from the reception desk asking me to come to the front to sign for a package. It was a bigger box than I was expecting. Pete had sent it overnight. I got it back to my cubicle and opened it. My cubicle mate Maranda was there and had to help me.
“Who is this from Lizzy?” Maranda asked me.
“I’m not sure you’d believe me if I told you.” I said as I pulled the box open.
I found more clothes than I thought I would. He sent a few hoodies, a pair of jeans and lots of tee shirts. I was stunned. I really liked the clothes too.
“Liz, this is all Clandestine. This stuff isn’t cheap. Who sent this to you?” Maranda asked. She was looking at one of the hoodies.
“Pete.” I said without thinking, “I can’t believe this. He said he wanted to send me something, I didn’t know he was going to send the entire line. This is just too much.” I was just dumbfounded.
“Pete who?” Maranda asked. Then her eyes got all big behind her glasses and her voice dropped to a whisper. “You don’t mean Pete Wentz do you?” Maranda was the one who first got me to listen to Fall Out Boy. She was a huge fan. She’s also a bit younger than me.
Before I could answer her I got called up to the front desk again. Another delivery for me. This time it was flowers. What the hell is this kid doing to me? I was going to be the talk of the office. I signed for them and quickly took them back to my desk. Maranda was still going through the box. She looked up and her mouth dropped when she saw the flowers. They really were beautiful, Stargazer lilies, my favorite. Jason had never given me any as nice as these. I pulled the card and read it.
Lizzy-
Beautiful flowers for a beautiful girl.
Love,
Pete
“Shit!” I hissed. “This has got to stop.”
“Lizzy, what is going on? Who sent those?” Maranda questioned me.
“Promise me you’ll keep a secret?” I wasn’t too worried she would tell anyone. She was one of the few people in the office who could keep her mouth shut.
“Promise. You know I’m good at that.” She said.
Before I could tell her what was going on my boss popped his head around the corner of our cubicle.
“Ladies, I need to know how many new students registered last week, and how many of them you got files started on. Wow! Nice flowers. Who are they from?” Mark asked. My boss is one of the nicest guys. You really can’t ask for a better boss.
“Jason. He wanted to cheer me up. You know, since my grandmother died I’ve been kind of down. And to answer your question, 652 new students. And we have about half of them done. I can email you the exact number if you want me to.” I told him. I hated to lie to him, but no one else needed to know someone other than my husband had sent me flowers.
“Yes please. The other department heads and I are trying to decide if we need to hire more people. And how many we would need. I swear this school is growing so fast I don’t know how we’re going to keep up with the staff we have. Send that to me when you can Lizzy. Thanks you two.” Mark said as he left.
Maranda was still waiting for me to fill her in. I looked at her and said, “Let me send a few emails and then let’s go to lunch. Then I’ll tell you everything.”
She nodded and went back to her desk. I quickly sent Mark the information he needed. Then I sent one to Pete.
Pete-
I just got the clothes and the flowers.
Thank you for both. The flowers are beautiful.
But really you shouldn’t have.
Lizzy-
Maranda and I left shortly after and I took her to lunch. I told her everything. It was nice to have someone to talk to about this.
“So, you’re telling me you met the Pete Wentz on the plane. The two of you hit it off and now he’s sending you flowers and clothes? My god! Aren’t you one lucky bitch?” She said after I had told her everything.
“Well if I was single and five years younger I would have to agree with you. But it’s not like anything is going to happen.” I told her.
Oh, how wrong I was.
