Shadow woke up to see Maria and Aleena running over to his bed. He weakly held his arms out.
Maria and Aleena jumped on the bed and hugged Shadow.
“Thanks for saving us, Dad.” Maria said. “I’m glad you’re okay.”
“We missed you too.” Aleena added.
“Missed you too.” Shadow replied.
Sonic came in. “Sorry it took so long to find you.” He said. “So do you remember what happened?”
“No.” Shadow replied.
“You don’t remember the robots?” Maria asked.
“What robots?” Shadow asked.
“Some robots that looked like you showed up.” Maria replied.
Shadow furrowed his brow. “Then who sent them?”
Sonic shrugged. “Well, Gerald is dead.” He said. “I saw the body. The funeral was an open casket one.”
“What about Ivo?” Shadow asked.
“The place was incinerated.” Sonic replied. “Everything was burned to ash.”
Maria snapped her fingers. “The name Ivo was on one of the robots.”
“Thanks, Maria.” Sonic replied. “Can you and Aleena go help aunt Sally and uncle Manic in the kitchen?”
Maria and Aleena got up and ran out of the room.
“We’re on the Tornado 2.0 with the Chaos Emeralds, in route to a signal we picked up on Green Hill zone.” Sonic said. “Okay, as far as we’ve been able to figure out, Ivo had you imprisoned for some reason. Knuckles uncovered some files that Manic said is Project: Angel type stuff, whatever that means.”
“It’s from the original script for Terminator: Salvation.” Shadow replied. “To put it simply, organic bodies are hollowed out and have most or all of their insides replaced with electronics.”
Sonic gagged.
“The T2: Infiltrator series was worse than that.” Shadow said, getting up.
Sonic followed Shadow out of the room and down the hall.
“I know why he wanted me out of the way, but why didn’t he try to find any of you?” Shadow asked.
“He did.” Sonic replied. “Manic said a few metal Shadows came to my house after I left to rescue you and the girls when Aleena called me. Knux, Tails, and Bunnie had to fight off a few. They probably went to Manic’s place too, but he and Sally took the kids and got to the airship before they could find out the hard way.”
Sonic and Shadow walked into the control room.
Manic swiveled in his chair to face them, grinning. “Dude, you should’ve seen Maria take on a metal Shadow.”
“She what?” Shadow asked. He glared at Sonic. “What were you-”
Sonic held his hands up defensively. “I didn’t let her.” He said. “When I got to your house, the girls were being swarmed by them. Maria and Aleena took out most of them on their own.”
“Maria flipped one over her shoulder like it was a rag doll.” Manic added. “I wish I could’ve actually seen that instead of the security footage I found.”
Sonic shook his head. “This is why you don’t babysit our kids, bro.”
Shadow rolled his eyes. “They’re eight years old.” He said. “You’re making this up.”
Tails got up and handed Shadow his tablet. “No, he’s not.” He replied. “I’ve been running tests on yours and the girls’ blood samples while everyone was searching for you. They both inherited your super strength; Aleena inherited your speed, but Maria didn’t. All three of you nearly have the same IQ level.”
“That’s all?” Shadow asked.
Tails nodded. “Anyway, we should be in Green Hill zone in about ten minutes, so I’d hurry up and eat if I were you.”
Manic tossed Shadow a canned protein shake. “Better than nothing.”

Maria and Aleena rushed over to Shadow.
“Daddy, can we fight robots with you?” Aleena asked. “Please?”
“Yeah, can they?” Manic asked.
“No, and shut up, Manic.” Shadow replied. “Girls, you two stay here with uncle Tails, okay?”
“We can play Risk again.” Tails said.
Maria and Aleena ran over to Tails.
“Wish me luck, they beat me every time.” Tails said over his shoulder as he walked the girls to the cafeteria.
Manic put on his headphones and turned on some music.
Sonic slid on his armor and walked over to Shadow and Knuckles.
Shadow led the way out of the ship. “It’s a good thing Manic doesn’t have kids.”
Sonic sighed. “About that. He’s planning on adopting some kid he’s been fostering for a couple of weeks.”
“Who would let him adopt a kid?” Knuckles asked incredulously.
“That’s a riddle for the ages.” Shadow muttered.
Maria and Aleena jumped on the bed and hugged Shadow.
