-At age fifteen.

Sonic groaned as they walked past the closed self-checkout lines. “What is the point of making these self-checkouts if they’re just going to randomly close them?”

“You got me there.” Shadow admitted. He led Sonic to an open checkout line. “Here; this one’s short.”

Sonic sighed. “Yeah, because no one wants to get behind an old guy.” He muttered.

The old fox slowly placed his shopping basket on the conveyor belt.

Sonic scoffed. “Come on, old guy, move it.” He muttered under his breath.

“You know you’re gonna be old one day if Eggman doesn’t somehow happen to kill you first, right?” Shadow asked.

“Yeah, but I won’t be that slow.” Sonic replied. “I’m in way better shape.”

Shadow rolled his eyes. “You’ll find out if you’re lucky to live to be that old.” He thought.

-At age forty.

Sonic stopped running and eased himself to sit down on the ground. He rubbed his knees, groaning softly.

Shadow glanced behind him and saw that Sonic had stopped running. He stopped and walked back over to Sonic. “I never thought this would happen.”

“Shut up!” Sonic yelled.

Shadow knelt down. “Did you fall or something?”

Sonic huffed. “No, it’s joint pain, okay?!” He snapped. “Are you happy that you’re right that I’d slow down or get weaker as I got older and beat myself up fighting Egghead’s robots?!”

Shadow shook his head. “I wasn’t happy about it, I was saying you shouldn’t have been a smart aleck about that kind of stuff when you were younger.”

Sonic roughly brushed his hand against his eyes.

Shadow sighed. “If it helps you, I will age, just slower than normal.”

Sonic rolled his eyes. “Yeah. The fact that you will still be young and able for a long while is very helpful to me.”

“You don’t have to be sarcastic.” Shadow said.

Sonic hissed in pain as he slowly got to his feet.

“Can you walk home?” Shadow asked. “I’ll tell everyone you won.”

Sonic grinned weakly. “Thanks, Shadow.” He dusted himself off. “I can walk home.”

-At age sixty.

Shadow sat uneasily with Sonic, Manic, and their friends at the dinner for Dr. Eggman’s funeral. He was the only one who was still young.

While he was never exactly friends with these guys and was only around them because they had a common enemy and he was married to Sonia, he hated seeing them so frail and their fur and/or spines turning gray.

“So, of course, Eggman lost.” Sonic said, smiling weakly. “I’ll miss fighting with Egghead.”

“What?” Manic asked.

Sonic sighed. “What part did you miss?”

Manic grinned nervously. “All of it.”

Sonic groaned.

“I’m sorry that my ears are ringing.” Manic said.

“That was why you were supposed to wear ear plugs at our concerts.” Sonic replied. “You also should’ve known better than to playing music through your headphones as loud as it could go.”

“I’m sorry.” Manic said. “Like I enjoy being nearly deaf. I’m just as aggravated with my past self as you are.”

Sonic shook his head. He slowly stood up, then headed to the bathroom.

Manic huffed. “Can you believe him?” He asked. “He makes remarks about my hearing, but gets ticked if I say something about him slowing down.”

“Nothing he does surprises me.” Shadow replied.

“Seriously though, it frustrates me too.” Manic said, propping his head up with his hands. “I wish I hadn’t forgotten those earplugs during every gig or played my music that loud.”

“I think he’s just frustrated in a general sense, Manic.” Tails said, sliding his empty plate aside.

“He’s been doing that to everyone lately.” Knuckles added.

“I know, but he shouldn’t take it out on everyone.” Manic replied.

Sonic came back and sat down beside Manic. He put his arm around Manic’s shoulders. “I’m sorry, bro.” He said. “It’s frustrating, but I shouldn’t get aggravated with you.”

“It’s cool, bro.” Manic replied. He slid his arms down. “I guess I need to go ahead and get those hearing aids.”

-At age ninety.

Sonic folded his arms as they walked through the grocery store. “I can drive myself to the store.”

Shadow shook his head. “You couldn’t even see the door handle and you forgot how to get home last week.” He said. “I’m doing a favor for Sonia, not you. So do your sister a favor and accept my help.”

Sonic huffed. “Fine.”

Shadow got their groceries and found a somewhat short line.

A young hedgehog and his dad walked up and stood behind Shadow and Sonic.

The little hedgehog huffed. “Why do we have to stand behind this old guy?”

Shadow glanced at Sonic. “Sound familiar?”

“Huh?” Sonic asked.

The hedgehog’s dad looked at his son. “You’ll be old one day too.”

Shadow glanced back at the two hedgehogs. “I told him the same thing years ago.” He said, motioning to Sonic. “This is Sonic the Hedgehog.”

The little boy’s jaw dropped.

The hedgehog’s dad nudged the boy. “See?”

“I’m sorry.” The boy said.

“It’s fine.” Shadow replied. “You learned quicker than Sonic.”

-At age ninety-five.

Shadow sighed. “Sonic, you can’t go out.” He said. “It’s cold and you’re sick.”

Sonic weakly crossed his arms. “Well, can we call Manic to come over?”

Shadow sighed. “Manic’s been dead for five years.”

“Dead?” Sonic asked. “And you didn’t tell me?!”

“You forgot.” Shadow replied.

Sonic huffed. “I wouldn’t forget that my brother died.”

Shadow rubbed his forehead. “You’re right, Sonic. I’m very sorry.”

Sonic shook his head. “So where’s … uh… my sister?” He asked. “Did she die too?”

“Yes. Last year.” Shadow replied. “She asked me to take care of you, which is why you’re living with me and I haven’t sent you to a home.”

Sonic didn’t answer, instead he stared off into space.

“Come on, it’s lunchtime.” Shadow said. “Maybe we’ll call Tails and ask him to visit.”

“Who?” Sonic asked.

“Your honorary little brother.” Shadow replied.

Sonic shrugged. “Okay.”

“I can’t believe he forgot Tails.” Shadow thought.

-At age ninety-eight.

Shadow and Tails stood by Sonic’s grave.

Shadow didn’t look any older than he did at age fifty while poor Tail was completely white and needed a walker.

Shadow rolled his eyes as he read the epithet on Sonic’s tombstone.

“The fastest thing alive, even faster than Shadow.” It read.

Tails chuckled. “I told him that was petty.”

“I would’ve been surprised if he hadn’t done that.” Shadow said.

Tails sighed. “I’ll give you a few minutes.” He said, hobbling aside.

Shadow glanced back at Tails. “Well… I’m sorry you had to learn the hard way.” He said softly. “You… you really didn’t deserve that.”

Shadow met up with Tails and walked him to the car.
