Sonia set out the coasters and snacks. “You boys can help out, y’know?”
“I’m not helping you impress that Hot Topic mascot you call a boyfriend.” Sonic said.
Manic tapped his fingers on the arm of the couch. “So when does Shads get here?”
“Any minute now.” Sonia said, smoothing the wrinkles out of her cargo skirt.
“Are you in love with him too, Manic?” Sonic asked.
Manic rolled his eyes. “I’m glad she’s not dating a snob.”
“True.” Sonic muttered. “But does it have to be Shadow the edgelord?”
The doorbell rang.
Sonia squealed as she ran to the door. “He’s here!”
Manic and Sonic looked over the couch.
“It doesn’t take that long.” Sonic said. “He better not kiss her.”
Sonia and Shadow, holding hands, walked in. “I can’t believe you’d watch Románico Callejón with me.”
“I’d rather watch Terminator 2.” Shadow replied. He sat down on the couch.
Manic patted Shadow on the arm. “I am so glad you’re dating my big sis.”
“Don’t touch me.” Shadow said.
“Right, sorry, bro.” Manic replied.
Sonia sat down and snuggled against Shadow.
Sonic folded his arms and quietly seethed.
“You’re still ticked?” Manic asked. “Personally, I prefer Shadow to Bartleby.”
“True.” Sonic muttered.
“I can always date Sally or Amy, Sonic.” Shadow said.
Sonic huffed. “Sorry.”
Sonia elbowed Shadow.
“I don’t like them, I’m messing with your annoying brother.” Shadow said.
an hour later
Sonia’s phone rang.
“Oh, that’s Mindy.” Sonia said, getting up. She answered her phone as she walked away. “Hey, girl, is your dad okay? How did the appointment go?”
Manic looked over his shoulder. “Sis? Do-”
Sonia’s bedroom door closed.
“So Sonia can’t turn the channel to Terminator 2 while she’s on the phone?” Shadow asked.
“What’s stopping you from changing the channel?” Manic asked.
“I could ask you the same thing.” Shadow replied.
“I’m not changing the channel.” Sonic said. “Sonia’s a monster when she’s angry.”
Manic started humming Monster by Skillet.
“Shut up, Manic.” Shadow snapped.
“Oh, sorry, are you enjoying this crap?” Manic asked.
“No, but I at least want to finish this if I’ve sat through this for two hours.” Shadow replied.
Manic slumped in his seat. “Why?”
A gunshot rang out on the tv.
“Wait.” Manic said, sitting up. He pointed to the tv. “Why’d she kill that guy? I thought they were a couple.”
“She wanted his insurance money so she could run off with the other guy.” Shadow replied.
Sonic propped his head up with his fist. “You know Spanish?”
“I pay attention in class instead of passing notes to Amy.” Shadow said. “You really need to decide which of those girls you like and stop this stupid game of yours.”
Sonic sighed. “I know.”
“This girl has another guy?!” Manic snapped. “Oh, just push her down the stairs, third dude!”
“No, she should kill both of them too.” Shadow said. “They’re treating her like she’s a trophy.”
“This is both dark and weird at the same time.” Sonic said, getting up. “So you girls want popcorn… or a box of tissues?”
Shadow threw the remote at Sonic. “Be grateful that’s not a Chaos blast.”
Sonic caught the remote and turned the channel. “Look Terminator 2. Now you can be normal again.”
Shadow and Manic quietly watched the movie.
Sonia finally came out of her room. “What? Who turned the channel?”
“Sonic.” Shadow and Manic said.
Sonia scoffed. “Yeah, right. I know you two are Terminator fans.”
“I changed the channel.” Sonic said. “It’s weird seeing our little brother and your boyfriend watching soaps together.”
“Aww.” Sonia squealed.
“None of us said we enjoyed it.” Shadow said.
“It’s frustrating.” Manic added.
Sonia sat on the couch beside Shadow and laid her head on his shoulder.
Sonic turned the channel back to Sonia’s show.
Sonia sighed. “It’s over.” She muttered. “What did I miss?”
Sonic leaned forward. “Well, Shadow?”
“Do you want to get blasted through a wall?” Shadow asked.
“No.” Sonic replied.
“It was rage-inducing.” Manic muttered. “You’re better off not knowing.”
