I woke up a few hours later to an empty bed. Pete wasn’t next to me. I got up and pulled out a clean tee shirt, a pair of yoga pants and some underwear. I took the clothes and headed for the bathroom. I took the time to wash my face and brush my teeth. I brushed out my hair and pulled it up with a clip. I got dressed and headed downstairs.
I found Pete in the kitchen. He had made a fresh pot of coffee and was trying to cook. He stood in front of the stove frying bacon.
“Hey. Why didn’t you wake me?” I asked walking up to him.
He turned and smiled at me. He planted a kiss on my lips before he answered me. “I hope you don’t mind. I wanted to cook for you. But I only know how to make bacon, eggs and toast. And I let you sleep because you looked so peaceful I couldn’t bring myself to wake you.”
“You’re awfully sweet, you know that?” I smiled at him and dropped another kiss on his lips. “I don’t mind you cooking. Can I help with anything?” I offered.
“No, I think I’m good. I found everything I needed. Oh, one thing, do you have any cream for the coffee?” He asked me.
“I have milk and creamer. The creamer is in the pantry.” I answered him. I walked around him and pulled two mugs from the cupboard. I made myself a cup of coffee and asked Pete if he wanted one too. I fixed his for him after he told me how he takes it and left it on the counter. I pulled some silverware out and set the table.
“Are scrambled eggs alright? I’m not very good at fried eggs.” Pete asked me as he pulled the eggs out of the fridge.
“Scrambled is fine. It’s nice of you to cook. How’s your eye feeling?” It had turned a dark purple and looked terrible. The swelling on his lip had gone down though.
“It’s tender, but not too bad. Looks worse than it feels.” He told me. “What do you want to do today?” He asked as he cracked eggs into a bowl. He added the milk and started to whip them.
“Well, I do need to run some errands, but I can put most of them off until later in the week. But I do have to go grocery shopping today. You can see I don’t have much food in the house. Other than that, we can do whatever you want.” I told him.
Pete dished up breakfast and brought the plates to the table. I brought over the coffee and butter for the toast. I have to say Pete can really chief up some good eggs and bacon.
“Mmm, this is really good. Thanks for making breakfast.” I told him after I took a bite.
“Thanks, I’m not the best chef, but I’m pretty good at what I like to eat. So, what other errands did you need to do?” He asked me.
“Well, besides the grocery store, I need to drop some clothes off at the drycleaners. And I wanted to stop by the mall and pick up some things at Target. Nothing that can’t wait.” I told him.
“We can still do all that if you want. I love shopping. It’ll be fun to get out and do something.” Pete said before taking another bite.
We finished breakfast talking about silly things. When we were done I cleaned up the kitchen with Pete’s help and then headed for the shower. I pulled out some clean towels from the linen closet and set them out for him.
Pete came upstairs with me and stretched out on the bed while I showered. When I got out I wrapped a towel around my head and one around my body. I took the time to towel dry my hair and do the other things we all do when we’re getting ready in the morning. I tried to keep it quick so Pete wouldn’t have to wait long. I came out of the bathroom still wrapped in the towel, with my dirty clothes in my hand.
Pete was still on the bed, but now he was under the covers without his shirt on. I assumed he didn’t have any pants on either. He did however have that smile of his on his face. I was starting to fall for that smile. I stopped and smiled at him.
“Shower’s all yours.” I said to him.
He just flipped the corner of the blanket up and patted the bed. “Come here.” He said.
I slipped into the bed and he immediately pulled me close to him. I found out he didn’t have anything on, not even his boxers. The towel was soon pulled off and we had a repeat of what happened earlier. I had forgotten how long a younger man can go. For the first time in years sex lasted longer than five minutes total.
We finally left the house about two hours later. I dropped off the dry cleaning and then we went to the mall. The mall here sucks, but the store I wanted to go to was there. We shopped and I found the things I needed. Pete kept putting things in the cart, things I didn’t need. Shopping with Pete was more fun than shopping with any of my girlfriends.
When we went to the checkout to pay for the things we had picked out Pete wouldn’t let me pay. He insisted on taking care of it for me. I tried to argue with him, but he wouldn’t hear it.
He wanted to goof off in the mall for a bit so we did. We walked around the mall for a while. We ate in the food court. Then he dragged me into the Hot Topic.
“Pete, I’m too old for this place.” I protested.
“No you’re not. Come on.” He said as he took my hand and dragged me in the store.
We wound our way through the racks, stopping when Pete saw something he liked. I let go of his hand and looked around too. Really I’m too old for this place. I thought to myself as I looked at some of the clothes. I couldn’t wear any of this to work. Pete came up to me with an armload of clothes.
“Here, go try this stuff on.” He said dumping the load in my arms.
“What? Why?” I was surprised at his instructions.
“Because I want to see what you look like in them.” He said as he put his hand on my back and steered me towards the dressing rooms. “Go on. And come out and show me everything.”
“Fine, but you get to watch the bags.” I told him. I handed him the other shopping bags and went in to try the clothes on. He had picked out some really cute things. I showed him everything. Some things he didn’t like and some he did. When I was done he gathered up the things he had liked on me and took them to the register. Then we finally went to the grocery store. We bought far more than I had on my list. I started to feel like I was with a little kid the way Pete would just pick stuff off the shelves. I had more food then I would eat in two weeks by the time we were done.
By the time we got back to my place we had the car loaded up. It took us three trips to get everything inside. Pete had insisted on paying for everything, even the food. I tried to argue with him, but he just kept pulling out his credit card. I would pull mine out and he would just hand it back to me.
“Pete, this is really too much.” I said as I looked over all the bags on my living room floor.
“No it’s not Lizzy.” He came up to me and wrapped his arms around my waist. My arms found their way around his neck. “I wanted to, so let me.” He said before he kissed me.
“But my groceries?” I asked.
“I’m going to be eating a lot of that while I’m here. Don’t worry about it.”
I gave in. Maybe I shouldn’t have, but with only my income now the bills were getting a little tight. I wouldn’t have been able to afford all the extras we picked up today. I put away the things Pete had bought me and then started dinner.
We hung out at the house that night. We just hung out and talked. We started out in the living room and eventually ended up in bed. We stayed up all night talking. It turned into one of those nights. You know, when you stay up talking all night, telling each other everything. I hadn’t had one of those nights in a very long time. I really got to know Pete, the real Pete. And the more I got to know him the more I liked him. I liked him a lot, and that worried me just a little. I wasn’t ready to fall in love with someone just yet. And I knew I was heading in that direction with him.
We finally fell asleep as the sun was coming up.
It was a good night.
