With dwindling numbers and loss of morale since Sonic died, Manic (the second in command in the resistance) was starting to lose hope as well.

Manic laid on his bed and loaded another cd into his cd player. He skipped to the song ‘Fire Inside of Me’ by Skillet.

Jade walked in, holding their now three week old daughter, Elodie.

Manic paused his cd and slid his headphones off. “What now?”

Jade sat down beside Manic and handed Elodie to him.

Elodie chirped and nuzzled Manic’s chest.

“There's my girl.” Manic said, gently patting her back.

“Tails said he intercepted a Robotnik code.” Jade said. “It doesn't sound good.”

“Nothing that… guy does is good.” Manic replied.

Jade nodded. “I know, but Tails thinks he found the key to winning the war.”

Manic looked at Elodie. “I hope so.” He said. “I'd like for the kids to have a slightly normal life.”

“He said he has some good news for you.” Jade replied. “He perfected his latest project.”

“That is good news.” Manic said, handing Elodie to Jade. “Did he send you in here to get me?”

“Yeah, your dad is already in the lab.” Jade replied.

Manic got up and ran out the door.

Manic walked into Tails’ lab. “Jade said you wanted to see me.”

Tails looked up from repairing Shadow’s air shoes. “Yeah, just give me one second.” He said. “Unless Shadow wants to explain.”

“He perfected the Time Machine.” Shadow said, swiveling the computer chair to face Manic. “We can prevent the war from ever happening.”

“Won’t that make something worse happen?” Manic asked. “Create a paradox or something?”

Tails set this screwdriver down. “Yes, but… the only way that can happen is if you tip off Robotnik somehow or try to stay in the past or travel back to our present.”

“So we’ll have to sacrifice ourselves.” Shadow said. “It’s technically a suicide mission.”

Manic sighed, then nodded. “Our family is worth it.”

Tails turned around to face Manic and Shadow. He leaned against the table. “But we have to do this tonight.” He said. “Robotnik is planning a full-scale attack on Mobius tonight.”

“Now?” Manic asked.

Tails nodded. “I’m sorry it’s such short notice.” He replied. “Go ahead and tell your families goodbye. Meet me here at four.”

“So you can’t come back?” Jade asked.

Manic shook his head. “Tails said it’ll cause an anomaly you all won’t notice.” He replied. “It’s either try to stop this before it starts or get wiped out tonight. Robotnik’s planning a full scale assault on Mobius tonight.”

“We have no choice then.” Jade said, rubbing her arm. “Go on the mission. We’ll be fine.”

Manic hugged Jade.

“Kids, Daddy has to go on another mission.” Jade called.

Jaxx, carrying Elodie, and Jazz walked in.

Manic and Jade looked at the kids.

“I’m sorry.” Jaxx said. “I know she needs her nap, but I thought Daddy would like to tell Elodie bye.”

“That’s okay.” Manic replied. “I wanted to tell all of you goodbye.”

Manic held Jade’s hand tightly as they headed to Tails lab.

“You’re doing this for us, love.” Jade said.

Manic nodded.

“Tails said it’ll cause an anomaly that we won’t even notice.” Jade continued.

“How would he know?” Manic asked.

“I was trying to reassure you.” Jade replied.

They made it to the lab.

Tails had started the Time Machine.

The time machine’s chambers were glowing gold and green.

Shadow slid on his shoes. “Are you sure these won’t burn off?”

Tails shrugged. “We’ll see. At least they won’t fuse to you.”

Manic hugged and kissed Jade. “Bye, babe. Love you.”

Jade ruffled Manic’s head spines. “Love you too.”

Manic finally let Jade go and stepped into one of the chambers.

Shadow headed into the other chamber.

Tails saluted them and started the machine.
