Manic cracked his eyes open, finding himself in a hospital room.

He noticed he was hooked up to a heart monitor.

Manic sighed in relief. "Oh, I made it." He said. He flinched when the door opened.

Sonic came into the room.

"What happened?" Manic asked.

"You nearly died." Sonic replied. “You scared us, bro.”

Manic stared at the ceiling. "How bad were the… symptoms or whatever?"

"Your heart stopped a couple of times." Sonic said, sitting down beside him. "Mom had to revive you twice at the house. They said you had a seizure in the ambulance."

Manic didn't say anything.

"Do you even care?" Sonic asked. "Are you just wanting to die?"

"It's not like anyone ever cared." Manic replied.

"I care." Sonic said. "That's why I tried to find you. Mom-"

"Then why were we sent away?" Manic asked. "I was passed around to probably a hundred homes and I aged out. No one wanted me. I was homeless until you found me. Don't say it was the drugs; that only started two years ago."

Sonic opened his mouth to say something.

"Don't say it's my clothes either." Manic said. "It shouldn't matter. Does it give anyone an excuse to use me to get a paycheck or to abuse me?"

Sonic shook his head.

Manic roughly brushed a tear off of his face.

"Do you want to know why Mom gave us up?" Sonic asked.

Manic nodded.

"She was sixteen when we were born." Sonic said. "Dad abandoned her… well, us. I never bothered to find him since Uncle Chuck told me it was just as well that I didn't know him. Anyway, Mom couldn't take care of us, so she sent us away. Everyone told her to send us to a safe haven. She didn't know her rights would be terminated after a certain period of time."

"Right." Manic replied.

"She didn't realize that until it was too late." Sonic said. “She actually tried to get us back. I'm sorry you couldn't stay with me, at least when Uncle Chuck took me in.”

Manic sighed.

Sonic gave him a DVD. "You said you like Terminator." He said. "I got you the Sarah Connor Chronicles: the complete series on DVD."

Manic grinned. "I never saw this before. Thanks, bro."

"You're welcome." Sonic said.

The door creaked open again.

A dark green female hedgehog came in, carrying a small vase of flowers. She was wearing a hospital volunteer badge on a lanyard around her neck and black scrubs.

“Oh, you're awake,” She said. “I’m Jade; I work with your mom sometimes.”

“Hi.” Sonic and Manic said.

Jade set the flowers down on the table. “I'm glad you made it, Manic,” She said. “Oh, and I saw your T-shirt. I love Fight the Fury too.”

Manic grinned.

“Anyway, do you need something from the cafeteria or… anything?” Jade asked.

“I'm kinda thirsty.” Manic replied. “Can you get me a bottle of water? Please?”

“Sure.” Jade said. She looked at Sonic. “Would you like something to drink too? It won't be any trouble.”

“I’ll take a bottle of water.” Sonic replied. “Thanks.”

“Thank you.” Manic said.

“You're welcome.” Jade replied. She left the room and closed the door behind her.

“She seems to like you.” Sonic said. “Why didn't you ask her out?”

“Long story.” Manic replied.

An hour later, Sonia came in and sat down beside Manic's bed. “Listen, I know we got off to a bad start,” She said. “I just want you to know I… uh… I- I don't hate you.”

Manic nodded. “I don't hate you either, sis.”

“I'm really sorry for how spoiled I was acting that first night here.” Sonia said. “I think you had a worse time in foster care than I did.”

“It's cool, sis.” Manic replied. He grinned weakly. "I'm glad you had a better life."

Sonia hugged Manic.

Two days later, Manic was released from the hospital.

Sonic paced around the waiting room, waiting on a nurse to bring Manic down to the main lobby. “Does it have to take that long to release him?”

Sonia looked up from her phone. “Here he comes.”

Sonic looked up. “He seems to like that volunteer.”

“Should we go over or not?” Sonia asked.

“Let's go; he won't ask her out.” Sonic replied. “He won't tell me, but I believe he was in an abusive relationship.”

Sonia nodded. “I could see that.”

Sonia and Sonic walked over to Manic and Jade.

Manic was sitting in the wheelchair, texting.

Jade glanced at her watch. “Alright, got it,” She said. “I'll text you after work.”

Manic put his phone into his jacket pocket.

“Sonic, get the car, please.” Sonia said.

Sonic walked off.

“Alright, let's walk you to the car.” Jade said.

Sonia walked alongside Manic's wheelchair as they headed out the door.

“So, Sonia, if you and Sonic are seeing anyone, we could all go on a triple date” Jade said.

“I’m not seeing anyone right now, but I appreciate it.” Sonia replied. “Sonic has a girlfriend though.”

Sonic pulled the car in front.

“Well, I'll call you later, Manic.” Jade said.

“Can’t wait.” Manic replied.

Jade stood by long enough for Manic and Sonia to get into the car before going back inside the hospital.

Sonic glanced back at Manic as he pulled the car away from the hospital. “You two seem awfully friendly.”

“She asked me out.” Manic said. “I like her. I'm not sure she'd like me if….”

“She already knows you had a drug problem.” Sonia replied.

“Not that.” Manic said. “Don't ask.”

For the rest of the car ride, Manic sat quietly and desperately tried to ignore Sonia's obnoxious pop music she put on to drown out Sonic's complaints about the slow traffic.
