Sonia, Uncle Chuck, and Manic set the table for thanksgiving dinner.
Manic looked at Sonic, who was in the living room. “Bro, you can talk to Sally when she gets here.”
“He's talking to Mother.” Sonia said, setting out a bowl of mashed potatoes. “I hope she's not working late.”
Uncle Chuck set the turkey on the table. “So is Knuckles and Jade coming?”
“Knuckles will definitely be here.” Sonia said. “Poor guy lost his parents last year.”
Manic sighed. “That's awful.” He replied. “I didn't like him for a while, but I'd never wish that on anyone.”
Sonic hung up the phone and walked back into the room. “Set out an extra plate.” He said. “Mom’s bringing some guy home for Thanksgiving dinner.”
Manic set an extra plate out. “I didn't know she was seeing anyone.”
“He's spending the holiday alone and I guess she kinda likes him.” Sonic said, setting a bowl of cranberries on the table. “He's a cop. She got to talking to him while treating him for a gunshot wound. Oh, and I was talking to Sally for a bit. She'll be a little late for dinner.”
Jade, Sally, and Knuckles arrived.
Ten minutes later, the doorknob rattled.
“Mom's home.” Sonic said. He raced to the front door and opened it for Aleena… and Shadow.
“You're just in time for dinner.” Sonic said.
Sonia and Manic rushed in.
“Kids, this is Shadow.” Aleena said. “Shadow, this is Sonic, Sonia, and-”
“Manic?” Shadow asked.
“I didn't expect to see you again.” Manic replied.
Shadow sighed. “I did everything I could, Manic.”
“What?” Aleena asked.
“Oh.” Sonic said.
Manic grinned weakly and held his hand out to Shadow. “It's okay, I know how messed up the system is.” He said. “I'm surprised you remember me.”
“Is this one of those things I was told I was better off not knowing?” Aleena asked.
Sonic and Manic nodded.
“Okay, then.” Aleena replied. She bit her lip. “I… guess we shouldn't let dinner get cold.”

After dinner, Jade had to leave for work while Knuckles and Sonia went to volunteer in a homeless shelter.
Sally got her coat. “Sonic, come on,” She said. “We have to go to my family's dinner.”
“One minute.” Sonic replied. “I'll get us there.”
Sally smiled. “I know,” She said. She walked back inside to wait for Sonic.
Sonic sat down beside Manic. “Why don't you ask Jade to be your girlfriend already, bro?” he asked. “You seem to have a lot in common. Then again, it would be a nice Christmas gift.”
“I already told you what happened with my last girlfriend.” Manic replied.
“I'll handle it, Sonic.” Shadow said.
Sonic looked up. “Oh, yeah, thanks.” He said, standing up. “I got to take Sally to her dad's dinner.”
Shadow sat down beside Manic as Sonic went inside.
“She didn't believe you, huh?” Shadow asked.
“Of course not.” Manic replied.
“I know.” Shadow said. “I've been there.”
“You too?” Manic asked.
Shadow laid his arms on his knees. “My parents from age four to eighteen, when I left for the army.”
Manic cringed. “I’m sorry.”
Shadow and Manic sat quietly for a few minutes.
“I love Jade.” Manic said finally. “I’m afraid of how she'll react to that.”
“It's a risk you need to take.” Shadow replied. “You don't want to sit back and let her move on. You, Cat and my new partner are the only ones I've told that believed me. I hadn't mentioned anything to your mom or Sonic yet.”
Manic furrowed his brow. “So only guys believe you?”
“My new partner isn't a guy.” Shadow said. “Rouge and I became cops for the same reason.”
“Her too?” Manic asked.
Shadow nodded slowly. “She was a foster care kid like you.”
“I guess you're right.” Manic replied. He started to get up when Shadow caught his arm. “Is there something else?”
“I want you to know that I spent years trying to find you.” Shadow replied. “Cat and his wife actually became foster parents to find you and give you a good home.”
Manic sighed. “I wish they had.”
Shadow let go of Manic. “So do I.” He said. “I'm sorry.”

The next day, Manic showed up to pick Jade up from work.
Jade hugged Manic. “Aww, I was just thinking of you,” She said. “What brings you here?”
“I thought we could have dinner and… I need to talk to you about something.” Manic replied.
Jade slowly let Manic go. “Oh-kay.”
“No, I was gonna ask you to be my girlfriend.” Manic said. “There's just something you need to know first and do you mind talking to me for a bit first?”
Jade slid her hand into Manic's. “I'm happy to listen to you.”

“I am so sorry, Manic.” Jade cried.
Manic furrowed his brow. “I understand if-”
“I can't believe no one helped you.” Jade said.
“Y- you still want to date me?” Manic asked.
“Of course.” Jade replied. “It doesn't make me think less of you. I hate that you had to go through that. If you need to talk, help working through things. I'm here for you.”
Manic hugged Jade.
