Three year old Manic and his twin brother, Sonic, played outside their family's little cottage in the country about five miles from Mobodoon.
Of course, the two hoglets wandered away, in spite of their mom telling them to stay close to the cottage out of fear of the warmongering echidna tribe that was said to be heading in the general direction of their sleepy little town.
Sonic's eyes widened and pointed behind Manic. "Echidnas!" He cried. "Run, Manic!"
Sonic raced off, leaving a stunned Manic in his wake.
"I didn't know he could run that fast." Manic thought. He snapped out of his thoughts and tried his best to run after his big brother.
Manic knew that he and Sonic were supposed to go straight to the Emerald palace if they ever spotted the echidnas and their parents would meet them there, but he had to check on their mom since their dad was on a hunting trip in the badlands and their paternal uncle lived far away (he didn't remember where).
Manic ran as fast as he could to their cottage and found his entire village burned to the ground.
"Ma?" Manic called. "Dad? S-"
Manic yelled and raised his spines as something grabbed him by the back of his tunic.
"This one's too small to be a slave." A male voice said.
Manic slowly looked over his shoulder, seeing an adult dark red echidna holding him by his tunic's collar. He trembled and whimpered, too afraid to even beg for his little life.
The echidnas never spared small children and a runt hoglet like Manic was absolutely no exception.
"He'll grow up." A maroon echidna male said, tilting Manic's chin up to get a better look at the frightened hoglet's face. "Besides, he'll be easy to train right now."
Manic tensed up as he was handed over to the other echidna.
"Knuckles might like having a little pet." The maroon echidna said.
Manic was shaking uncontrollably as the echidnas tied his wrists together and led him back to their camp.
He glanced around, looking for his big brother and parents among the small crowd of captives (mostly teenagers or older kids that rarely paid him any attention). He hung his head and cried softly as he realized his family was gone.

Sonic ran up to the gate of the Emerald Palace and pounded on the wood and iron gate with his little fists. "Help us, please!"
A female owl opened the door. "Come in, little fellow."
Sonic rushed in and turned around. "What- where's Manic?"
"Who?" The owl asked.
"My little brother." Sonic replied. "Oh, no, he's back in the woods."
Sonic raced off.
The owl flew behind Sonic.
Sonic skidded to a stop as he arrived at his village. He noticed Manic's black beaded necklace on the ground, near their burned down cottage, and picked it up.
"He was… he was wearing it b-before I got you." Sonic said, voice breaking.
The owl landed beside Sonic.
Sonic looked up at her with tears in his eyes. "My family's gone."
The owl hugged Sonic. "I'm so sorry, little one."
After about an hour, Sonic finally cried it out.
The owl let go of Sonic. "Alright, let's head back to the palace."
Sonic nodded. "My name's Sonic." He said, getting ready to run again.
The owl stretched her wings. "Nice to meet you, Sonic; my name is Longclaw."

Seven year old Manic quietly crawled out of his cot and peeked out of the window of the shack he was made to stay in.
He finally had enough of cooking and cleaning (and getting his spines ripped out if he messed up) for a bunch of hateful echidnas.
He decided he'd rather die than stay here. If they killed him for his escape attempt, at least he'd be free.
Manic scurried out the window and made a run for the woods.
To his great surprise, he was able to escape undetected.
As Manic walked through the woods, he wondered how he'd take care of himself.
He didn't have any family that he remembered, so he was officially alone.
Manic rubbed his arms as he shivered and ran through the dark forest alone. "I'll be okay. I know how to hunt and everything." He whispered. He smiled weakly. "Maybe someone will adopt me if I make it to the city."
Manic happened to notice the echidna insignia that was burned into his little arm and sighed. "I guess my sleeves will cover it." He said, stretching his sleeve over the brand.

Seven year old Sonic saw the echidna warriors in the distance. "Oh, no. Not again." He said. He raced to the palace. "Longclaw! The-"
"I know." Longclaw replied. She hugged Sonic. "I need you to run as fast as you can to Knothole."
Sonic's jaw dropped. "That far?"
"Yes." Longclaw said, motioning to the direction Sonic needed to go. She handed Sonic a paper. "I love you, Sonic. Go to the palace at Knothole and give the guards this message. I'll send a message to you if everything is okay. Now go."
Sonic nodded. "Love you too, Longclaw." He whimpered. He raced away to Knothole.

Sonic arrived at the palace and showed a male feline guard the message. "Longclaw said I should give this to you."
The feline took the letter and read it. "Oh, Sonic, right this way." He said, opening the gate. He motioned to a walrus boy close to Sonic's age. "My apprentice, Rotor, will show you to the throne room."
Rotor held his hand out. "Do I need the letter, Cat- I mean, sir?"
Cat handed the letter to Rotor and chuckled. "Yes, you do, kid."
"Yes, sir." Rotor replied. "Come on, Sonic."
Sonic followed Rotor.
"They may let you serve as an apprentice too." Rotor said. "I was sent here after I escaped an Echidna raid in East Mobius a couple of years ago."
"Echidnas raided my home twice." Sonic replied. "I think I used to live near Mobodoon, then I lived at the Emerald Palace until now."
"Don't tell anyone else you were from the Emerald Palace." Rotor replied. "I don't think anyone believes the legend, but I'm sure someone may believe there's something valuable there and try to kidnap you to find it."
Sonic nodded. "Yes, Rotor." He said. "I don't understand how the legend started. I lived there for four whole years and never saw or heard of the Master Emerald."
Sonic and Rotor made it to the throne room and bowed.
King Acorn (a chipmunk) sat on his throne as his daughter, Sally, played nearby.
Sally waved at Sonic.
Sonic waved back.
"Your majesty, another orphan from an echidna raid has arrived." Rotor said, handing a message to the king.
King Acorn read the letter. "I'm terribly sorry for what happened to your home and family, Sonic." He said. "I'll give you the option of where you'd like to go. You can go to the Knothole orphanage or you may serve as an apprentice with Rotor."
Sonic glanced at Sally.
"I'll say your speed would definitely be an asset to our army." King Acorn said. "It's much better than the orphanage. We're still in the process of reforming the system."
"I'll serve as an apprentice, your majesty." Sonic replied.
