Sonia checked her watch. “Shouldn’t Manic be here by now?”
“He’s probably lost track of time with… her.” Sonic replied.
“Lay off, Sonic.” Sonia replied. “They are a pretty cute couple. Make your peace with it, I saw them at the jewelry store looking at rings. I think he’s coming by here for dessert to announce they’re getting married.”
Sonic groaned. “Just great. I-”
Sonic’s phone rang.
Sonic picked up his phone. “It’s Mom.” He said. “Let’s see what she has to say about it.”
“She’s happy for him.” Shadow mumbled.
Sonic answered the phone. “Hey, M- what?” He asked. He sat up, sliding off the edge of the couch. “Oh! What happened?”
Shadow and Sonia looked at each other.
Sonia stepped closer.
“We’re on our way, Mom.” Sonic said, getting up. He hung up his phone. “Let’s go.”
“What’s wrong?” Sonia asked.
“Manic’s in the hospital.” Sonic replied. “He got stabbed. Surge dragged him into something. She’s gonna need a doctor if he doesn’t make it.”
Shadow got up and picked up Sonia. He raced off to the hospital.
Sonic ran after them while calling Sally.
*
Sonic clenched his fists and stormed over to Surge, who was talking to Aleena and Sally in the middle of the hospital waiting room.
Surge saw Sonic and sighed. “It’s not-"
“What did you drag my brother into?” Sonic questioned.
“For your information, I didn’t ask Manic to fight those badniks.” Surge said, crossing her freshly stitched up arms. “He chose to save me.”
“She got hurt too.” Sally said.
Aleena nodded.
Sonic unclenched his fists. “Is he okay, Mom?”
“He’s okay, he’ll have to stay overnight.” Aleena replied.
“Do you want to see him first, Sonic?” Surge asked.
“I… don’t you want to see him?” Sonic asked.
“I’ll see him after you see him.” Surge replied.
“Thanks, Surge.” Sonic said.
*
Sonic walked into Manic’s room.
Manic looked at Sonic. “It wasn’t her fault.”
“So I heard.” Sonic said, sitting down beside Manic’s bed. “What happened?”
Manic sighed. “Well….”
* flashback
Manic glanced at Surge. “I’ll meet you at Sakura, Babe.” He said, scanning a few items for a customer.
Surge kissed Manic’s cheek and hurried off.
As soon as Manic’s replacement took over the register, Manic clocked out and left the mall.
Manic walked across the parking lot, getting his keys out of his pocket.
Surge screamed.
Manic looked up.
Surge was trying to fight five of Robotnik’s badniks alone. Her arms had a load of cuts from the fight.
These particular robots had long blades for arms.
Manic ran over and spin dashed one of the robots.
Surge stood there, stunned. “You can-”
The other robot stabbed Manic in his chest as Manic was uncurling.
Manic screamed and crumpled to the pavement.
Surge kicked the robot, sending it flying into a streetlight. She knelt down beside Manic and got her phone out of her coat pocket. “Stay with me, Babe.” She said, trying to call and put pressure on Manic’s injury. “I’m calling an ambulance.”
Manic groaned.
* present
“The doc said it was a miracle it didn’t hit my heart or lungs.” Manic said. “I’ve never been in so much pain in my life. Good thing Ma donated blood because it saved me.”
Sonic nodded. “I’m really sorry I haven’t been supportive of your relationship, even though I promised I would be before.”
“I hate that it took me nearly dying to get you to change your mind.” Manic replied.
Sonic ruffled Manic’s spines. “I’ll let your girl see you.” He said. “Oh, and don’t try to spin dash anything. You’re clearly not fast enough to do that.”
“Now I know that.” Manic muttered. “I need to take Shadow up on his offer to take me to the target range.”
“Just make sure he doesn’t mean using you as the target.” Sonic said, getting up.
Manic laughed, then hissed in pain.
“Sorry, bro.” Sonic said. He left the room.
Surge was in the hallway.
“I’m sorry, Surge.” Sonic said. “As long as you treat my little bro well, I’m… fine with it.”
Surge gave Sonic an uneasy grin and laughed nervously. “I don’t know if I like getting along this well with you.”
“Yeah, it’s kinda weird, huh?” Sonic asked.
“I guess ‘not getting along’ will be our thing.” Surge replied. “Manic won’t mind as long as it’s all in fun. Sorta.”
“Fine with me.” Sonic said.
Surge started to head to his room, but stopped. “Could you pick up some sushi from Sakura?” She asked. “Two orders of Tuna rolls, two egg rolls, and two bottles of water. Oh, and teriyaki chicken stir fry and a couple of spicy mayo cups. I’ll pay you back when you get here.”
Sonic nodded. “You won’t pay me back though, huh?
Surge smirked. “Probably not.”
Sonic rolled his eyes. “Thought so.” He said. “I’m on
treating because Manic deserves a free meal.”
Surge patted Sonic on the back. “Yeah, yeah, just get your brother his dinner.”
