Aleena sat in one of the curtained off stalls in the Mobotropolis emergency room, anxiously waiting to know the test results for her and her unborn triplets.
Doctors and nurses hurried around, tending to more than a hundred patients as a TV in the room showed the news broadcast covering the GUN lab explosion that had happened an hour ago.
There was nothing new to report, instead the reporters were discussing what the effects of the explosion could cause.
As if Aleena needed a reminder. She worked in the lab for five years, met her husband there, and had known about the Chaos Emeralds (which had been found in a meteor) a year prior to this event.
The Chaos Emeralds were a highly unstable element that the other scientists, led by Dr. Gerald Robotnik and his grandson Ivo, had been studying the emeralds in the hopes of creating a revolutionary new fuel source.
It was alleged they were conducting experiments on Mobians with the energy they had siphoned off of the gems, but she had never heard or seen any evidence to that effect.
All evidence was most likely destroyed in the explosion, along with Aleena’s husband Brenden.
Aleena drew a shaky breath and wiped her eyes with a tissue.
She could only hope that the explosion and radiation from the emeralds didn’t do any damage to her unborn triplets: Sonic, Sonia, and Manic.
“I should’ve quit as soon as I knew I was pregnant.” Aleena muttered under her breath. She softly cried out as a sharp pain gripped her abdomen. “Not now.”
Her doctor, Bunnie Rabbot, pulled the curtain back.
“Sorry about that, it’s been crazy.” Bunnie said, looking through the chart. “You-they should’ve made you a high priority patient since you’re-”
“I think I’m having contractions.” Aleena replied.

-Meanwhile-
Gerald scooped up two of the little baby boys (a hedgehog named Shadow and an echidna named Knuckles) who were being used as test subjects by GUN as soon as the hospital discharged them.
It was a miracle the EMTS found the babies and the news crews caught them on video before GUN could take the babies away and deny their existence.
Gerald shuddered to think about what GUN would’ve done if they had gotten a hold of the babies again.
The boys cried. All they had ever known was to be test subjects and had never been outside of the lab before to Gerald’s knowledge. He made sure the boys were cared for, but never took part in the ungodly experiments they performed on the poor children.
Gerald pushed the boys’ stroller to his car. “It’ll be okay.” He said. He fumbled to get the door open. “I won’t let Ivo hurt you again.”
He set the babies in the car seats he kept just in case he got a chance to rescue them from the lab, mostly from his grandson Ivo, who had somehow been put in charge of the top secret project and found the abandoned infants (or so he said they were abandoned).
Gerald put away the stroller, got in the car, and drove away. “Thank God it’s not a difficult process to adopt abandoned Mobians.” He said. He looked back at the babies, who had finally stopped crying. “Maria will be happy to see you two. I’m sure you all will get along fine.”

-a week later-
Aleena, holding her oldest son Sonic and daughter Sonia, sat by the incubator her youngest son Manic was in.
Manic whimpered and waved his tiny arms around as if he was trying to reach for her.
Aleena’s blinked back tears. “I’m sorry, baby.”
Sonic and Sonia whimpered.
Sonic waved his little arm in Manic’s direction.
Aleena looked at the two babies in her arms, completely puzzled about this situation.
Sonic and Sonia were doing well in spite of being born about two weeks early. They were as developed as a full term baby when they were born.
Manic wasn’t, though he was doing very well in spite of his situation. Still, he was a pitiful sight, laying in the incubator and hooked up to some machines.
Bunnie came into the room. “How are the little sugar hogs this morning?”
“They’re doing well.” Aleena replied.
Bunnie checked Sonic, Sonia, then Manic.
“So how are they doing?” Aleena asked.
“Sonia and Sonic are great.” Bunnie said, sitting down across from Aleena. “Manic is a little fighter. He can go home next week.”
Aleena smiled. “That’s a relief.”
“Now, Sonic and Sonia have absorbed some of the radiation.” Bunnie said. “Sonic more so than Sonia. I think that’s what affected their development. They’re healthy, but it’s something to keep an eye on.”
“What about Manic?” Aleena asked.
“He shows no signs of being affected by it.” Bunnie replied. “But we’d still like to keep an eye on him in case. It’s possible you and Manic may have some kind of effect from it that hasn’t presented itself yet.”
“That’s great.” Aleena said, smiling weakly. She sighed. “I just wish Brenden could’ve seen them. Today is his birthday.”
“I’m sorry for your loss.” Bunnie said sadly.
“Thanks.” Aleena replied. She looked at Manic. “He looks like his daddy. Brenden picked his name.”
“Aww.” Bunnie replied.
Manic whimpered.
“Oh, I know, little guy.” Bunnie said, kneeling down by Manic’s incubator. “You’ll get to be home soon.”
