The camper’s engine started rattling as they pulled into the gates of Green Hills estate.

Sonic pulled the camper through the gates.

The camper immediately shut off.

“At least it broke down at the place we’re meeting Mom.” Sonic said.

“That’s a relief.” Manic replied. “I can take a look at it when we get settled in.”

Sonic unbuckled his seatbelt. “Why didn’t you fix Shadow’s motorcycle?”

“The engine is completely shot.” Manic said. “He couldn’t leave it because Maria helped him paint the designs on it.”

“Her name is signed on it.” Shadow said, stepping behind them. “This is your mom’s home?”

“Sorta.” Sonic replied. “It’s her family’s home.”

Everyone got out of the camper.

Aleena came out of the house and put her hand to her mouth.

Sonic ran over to Aleena and hugged her.

Aleena cried tears of joy. “I missed you so much.” She said softly. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay.” Sonic replied.

Manic and Sonia walked up.

Aleena gasped. “Aww, you’re all grown up.”

Sonia hugged Aleena. “I’m so glad to see you.”

Aleena looked at Surge, who was holding Glitch, and Manic. “I wasn’t expecting this, but I’m glad to see you three.” She said, smiling.

“I’m glad too, Ma.” Manic replied. He hugged Aleena. He let her go and nudged Surge forward. “This is my wife Surge and son Glitch.”

“Nice to meet you.” Aleena said.

Surge handed Glitch to Aleena. “Nice to meet you too.”

“Oh, he’s adorable.” Aleena said. “He almost looks like his daddy’s baby pictures.”

Manic cleared his throat. “Uh… so….”

“I know you’re on wanted posters.” Aleena said. “That’s the least of my concerns, Manic.”

Shadow closed the hood of the van. “The engine is shot too.”

“Terios?” Aleena asked.

“Thanks for arranging the medicine shipment, your highness.” Shadow said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough this time.”

Aleena slumped her shoulders. “I’m so sorry.” She replied. “I did my best and used all of my connections to get the shipment in for her.”

“You did your best.” Shadow said. “She didn’t seem to have suffered.”

Glitch started whimpering.

“We can talk inside.” Aleena said.

The family gathered in the living room.

Glitch smiled and reached for Aleena.

Aleena smiled and played with Glitch’s little feet. “Oh, hey, sweetie.”

Manic handed Glitch to Aleena. “Grandma’s got you spoiled already, huh?”

Glitch grabbed one of Manic’s spines.

Manic yelped. “Let go, little dude.” He said. “Ma, tickle his sides. He’ll let go.”

Aleena tickled Glitch’s sides.

Glitch laughed and let go off Manic’s spines, though one had been pulled out.

“Aww, you can’t pull out your daddy’s spines.” Aleena said softly. “How old is he?”

“He turned three weeks old yesterday.” Manic replied.

“He’s adorable.” Aleena said. “I’m sorry you were taken from your original foster home.”

Manic shrugged. “It’s okay. Farrell was good to me and my family, I can’t complain.”

“Uncle Chuck?” Aleena asked. “How were things in Robotropolis?”

“About the same.” Uncle Chuck replied. “There’s an anti Robotnik sentiment rising and there’s still the anti monarchy sentiment.”

“So they don’t like us either.” Sonic said, leaning against the arm of his couch. “Why?”

Aleena gently bounced Glitch in her arms. “Your dad and I made some mistakes, but I would love the chance to make things right.”

Shadow propped his feet on the coffee table. “You did a fine job bringing the medicine in.” He replied. “I’d support the monarchy.”

Sonia looked at Shadow’s feet. “Shadow, could you please move your feet?”

Shadow slid his feet off of the coffee table and crossed one leg over the other.

Aleena laughed. “You’d lose your voice trying to tell your father to move his feet off of the coffee table, Sonia.”

“I hate to interrupt, but I’m really hungry.” Sonic said.

Aleena handed Glitch to Manic. “So am I. We can talk after dinner.”

Sonic brought in some supplies for Glitch and set them on the living room floor, beside the coffee table.

Manic was laying on the couch with Glitch asleep on his chest and his head in Surge’s lap.

Surge stroked Manic’s spines.

“That feels good, Babe.” Manic said.

Surge started humming a song, then glanced in Sonic’s direction. “Oh, thanks, Blue.”

“You’re welcome.” Sonic said, sitting down in the chair.

Manic started snoring.

“Puts him out every time.” Surge said. “Farrell and I joked that Manic and Glitch’s off button is their spines.”

Sonic laughed. “At least they’re easygoing.”

Surge half smiled. “I’m just glad Glitch takes after Manic.” She replied. “I have no idea what I’m doing most of the time.”

“I don’t think you’re doing a bad job.” Sonic said, putting his feet on the coffee table. He flipped on the TV.

Uncle Chuck came in and sat down in the armchair with a book.

Several minutes later, Shadow, Sonia, and Aleena walked in.

Shadow sat down on the massage chair.

Aleena and Sonia sat down on the loveseat and started flipping through one of the photo albums the former brought in.

Sonic texted Sally as he watched The Matrix.

Manic sat up, carefully holding Glitch as he moved. “Ooh, I love this movie.”

“Oh, boys, here’s pictures of your dad.” Aleena said, looking up from the album.

Sonic and Manic got up and looked at the pictures.

“He looks a lot like me there.” Manic said.

Surge got up and looked at the picture. “You definitely have your dad’s spines and smile.”

Manic sighed. “I don’t remember him.” He replied. He headed back to the couch.

“Do you have videos?” Sonic asked.

“We do.” Aleena replied. “We can watch a few before bedtime. We need to get an early start.”

Aleena got up and plugged a flashdrive into the tv. “You can start the video, I have to get the letters that your dad wrote to each of you.”

Sonic picked up the remote. “He wrote us letters?”

“Yeah, in case something happened to him.” Aleena replied.

*

Manic sat up, reading one of the letters his dad wrote him.

Surge finally settled into bed after they got Glitch to sleep again.

Manic sniffled and wiped his eyes.

“Babe?” Surge asked groggily.

Manic looked at Surge. “You’re awake?”

“Yeah.” Surge said, sitting up. She leaned over and laid her head on Manic’s chest. “You’re reading your dad’s letters?”

“Yeah, I’m at the one he wrote for my twelfth birthday.” Manic replied. “It’s just him telling me he loves me and he’s sorry that all of this happened and that he had to send me and my sibs away. Then, a lot of like… words of wisdom.”

Surge nodded. “He really did care about you.”

Manic sighed. “I didn’t know him.” He replied. “Reading this… I feel like I disappointed him and Ma.”

Surge bit her lip. “Maybe… she still loves you and I’m sure your dad would too.”

Manic nodded. “Yeah, but….”

Surge played with Manic’s spines. “You’ve got a chance to start over and make them proud now.”

“That’s true.” Manic said. “I really don’t want Glitch to be in the Thieves’ Guild.”

“I don’t either.” Surge replied. She slid back to her side of the bed. “You need to get some sleep.”

Manic yawned and settled back into bed. He held Surge as she snuggled against him.
