Manic wandered into the kitchen of the hedgehog family home in Green Hills. He yawned as he made coffee.

Glitch walked over to Manic. “Dad?”

Manic looked at Glitch. “What are you doing up?” He asked. “Why do you have my phone? You know better than to take it without permission.”

Glitch handed Manic his phone back. “Sorry, Dad. I just wanted to watch videos.”

Manic put the phone on the counter and started the coffee pot. “Well, don’t do that again or you’re grounded.”

“Can I ask you something?” Glitch asked. “What is the Great Robotnik War?”

“Ooh, boy.” Manic muttered. “That’s a doozy.”

“It was?” Glitch asked.

“Yeah, that was going on from the time I was born until I was sixteen years old.” Manic replied. “You were a baby when the war finally ended.”

“Did you fight in it?” Glitch asked.

Manic poured coffee into his mug. “Why don’t I tell you about the war while you help me make breakfast?”

Glitch got his cup out of the cabinet. “Cool.”

*

Manic poured himself a second cup of coffee. “So that’s how we wound up here.”

Glitch leaned across the table. “It sounds scary, Dad.”

“It was.” Manic replied. “I’m glad you don’t have to grow up like I did.”

Sonic ran in. “Oh, you made breakfast already?”

“Yeah, help yourself.” Manic said, motioning to the plates of waffles. “I was about to call everyone.”

“I’ll do it.” Sonic replied. He raced off to the bedrooms.

“Thanks, bro.” Manic said.

Glitch slumped in his seat.

Manic sat down beside Glitch. “Hey, it’s fine now.” He said, combing Glitch’s spines with his hand. “Robotnik’s gone. We destroyed the roboticizer blueprints.”

“Good.” Glitch replied.

“What are you doing up so early anyway?” Manic asked.

“Maria, River, and Lola.” Glitch muttered.

Shadow and Sonia came in with their two year old daughter Maria.

Maria huffed as she wobbled in, holding her dad’s hand.

Glitch looked at Maria. “Hey, you woke everyone up, why are you mad?”

Maria’s amber eyes lit up.

Shadow picked up Maria. “Calm down.”

Manic tapped Glitch’s shoulder. “She’s kinda got super powers, so be careful how you say things to her.”

Glitch nodded.

Sonic carried his and Sally’s one year old twins, River and Lola, in.

Sally, Surge and Aleena walked in.

“Aww, you helped your dad make breakfast, Glitch?” Aleena asked.

“Sorta.” Glitch replied.

“He was listening to my story.” Manic said, getting up. He patted Glitch on the shoulder. “I’ll bring your plate to you.”

Everyone started making plates of waffles.

Manic leaned closer to Sonic. “I told him about the war.”

“You didn’t even actually fight in it.” Sonic whispered.

“He knows.” Manic muttered.

*

Manic, Sonic, and Sonia sat in their music room, getting ready to practice for their concert at the Green Hills amphitheater that week.

Sonic finished tuning his guitar. “Bro, who are you texting?” He asked. “We gotta practice.”

“Farrell.” Manic replied.

“Oh, how is his security and locksmith business going?” Sonia asked.

“Pretty good if I still have a job and more work than I can handle.” Manic replied. “He needs me to come in real quick. One of his new guys doesn’t know what he’s doing.”

“I can take you real quick so we can get back to practice.” Sonic said, setting the guitar down. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to quit our day jobs soon.”

“Thanks, bro.” Manic replied. He got up. “But I’ll still do some jobs for him. It’s the least I can do after he raised me.”

Sonic picked up Manic, then set him back down. “No, get your hoverboard. He said. “Sorry, bro, you’re too heavy for me to carry now.”

Manic started climbing the stairs. “Why are you apologizing?” He asked. “It’s all muscle and I’m glad I’m finally at a healthy weight range.”

Sonic followed Manic. “So am I.”

“Shadow can train you too.” Manic said, glancing over his shoulder.

“I’ll keep it in mind.” Sonic replied.

Manic picked up his hoverboard and opened the back door.

Sonic got ready to run as Manic climbed on the board.

Sonic pushed Manic as he ran off.

The next week, the triplets’ band the Sonic Underground was getting ready to take the stage.

Shadow brought in Glitch, who had been asleep in the dressing room, to see the show. He took his place with the family (including Farrell and Lady Windermere) in the right stage wing. He set Glitch down beside Surge.

Glitch yawned.

Surge nudged Glitch over to Manic. “Give your dad a hug.”

Glitch hugged Manic. “Good luck, Dad.”

Manic ruffled Glitch’s spines. “You’re supposed to say break a leg, but thanks.”

Glitch furrowed his brow. “Why would I want you to break a leg?”

Manic laughed. “It’s a saying, I’ll explain later.”

Sonic patted Manic’s back. “We’re on.”

Sonic, Manic, and Sonia walked onto the stage.

*

Sonic drove the band’s van while Sonia, who was fast asleep) curled up in her seat and Manic stared out the window.

Manic drummed his fingers on the door panel. “Great show, I think we’ll do okay.”

“Enough for you to quit your day job?” Sonic asked.

“That and help Farrell retire early.” Manic replied.

“That’s sweet of you.” Sonic replied.

“He raised me; it’s the least I can do.” Manic said.

Sonic glanced at Manic. “I wish you could drive well.” He said. “My back’s kinda stiff.”

“You may wanna get that checked out.” Manic replied. “You might’ve messed something up when fighting Swatbots.”

“I did.” Sonic said. “The doc said I didn’t break anything.”

“But you’re still messed up.” Manic replied.

Sonic yawned. “Yeah.”

The siblings finally made it home after several minutes of driving.

Sonic parked the van.

Manic unbuckled his seatbelt. “Bro?”

“Yeah?” Sonic asked.

“Do you think our dad would be proud of me now?” Manic asked. “I know he’d be proud of you and Sonia.”

“I think he’d be proud of you too.” Sonic replied. “I know he wouldn’t like what you’ve done in the past, but he’d be proud of how you’ve turned yourself around.”

Manic grinned. “Thanks.”

Sonic reached back and tapped Sonia’s shoulder. “Sis?”

Sonia yawned and stretched her arms. “What? Are we home?”

“Yeah, sis.” Manic replied.

Sonia unbuckled her seatbelt. “Thanks for telling me instead of leaving me in the vehicle again.”

The siblings got out of the van.

“We love you, sis.” Sonic said, patting Sonia on the back.

“We wouldn’t do that again.” Manic added.

“Because Shadow will kick your butts.” Sonia replied.

The siblings laughed as they headed inside the house.
