Sonic, Sonia, and Manic gathered in the living room.
“So where are our presents?” Sonic asked.
Sonia elbowed Sonic. “Be patient.”
Manic drummed his fingers on the arm of the couch. “I hate to rush you, but I have a date in an hour.”
“It wouldn’t kill Surge to wait.” Sonic muttered.
“It wouldn’t kill you to be nice to her.” Manic said. “She’s trying to be civil to you.”
Sonic scoffed. “Is that why she drenched my chili dog in sriracha sauce?”
“You started it.” Manic replied. “You know she’s sensitive about that.”
“Mother, please hurry it up.” Sonia called. “The boys are annoying me and I don’t want to call Shadow to deal with it.”
Aleena finally made her way back into the room with a collapsible camping wagon. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t carry all of this in by myself and I wanted it to be a surprise.” She replied. She handed each of the triplets a small wrapped box.
Manic and Sonic quickly ripped off the wrapping paper while Sonia carefully unwrapped the gift. They each got a necklace with a silver musical instrument shaped medallion; Sonic’s was a guitar, Manic’s was a drum, and Sonia’s was a keyboard.
“Those have been in our family for years, now they're yours to hand down to your own children one day.” Aleena said.
Manic, Sonic, and Sonia got up and hugged Aleena. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Sonic glanced in the wagon. “Sweet! a new guitar!” He exclaimed. He pulled the red and white electric guitar out of the wagon.
Manic pulled a black hoverboard with silver flames painted on it out of the wagon. “You got the exact one I wanted.”
Aleena nodded. “You’ve talked about it a lot.” She replied. “That’s why I took those side jobs for a few months.”
“Thanks, Ma.” Manic said, hugging Aleena.
Sonia pulled a Cricut box out of the wagon. “Aww, you shouldn’t have.”
“It’s your birthday and I thought we could make shirts or stickers together.” Aleena replied.
Sonic ran to his room, then came back a few seconds later with his amp. “Alright, time to test this baby out.”
“Wait, I just have one question.” Sonia said.
“Make it quick.” Sonic and Manic replied.
“So what happened on the day we were born?” Sonia asked.
“We were born in a hospital.” Manic said, giving Sonia a blank stare. “End of story. I don’t want details of the actual process.”
Aleena laughed. “Well, you and Sonia were kind of born in a hospital.” She replied. “Sonic wasn’t.”
Sonic set his guitar down as Sonia and Manic sat on the couch. “Oh, so I was born in the house?” He asked. “Or on the side of the road on the way to the hospital?”
“No, you were born in a bathroom.” Aleena replied. “Your father and I were driving through town that day. I was craving chili dogs, even though I normally can’t stand them.”
Sonia and Manic looked at Sonic.
Sonic sighed.
“Anyway, the closest place to get any was the Sonic near the hospital.” Aleena said. “I had to go to the bathroom and that’s where you were born, Sonic.”
“You named me after that god awful restaurant?!” Sonic yelled. “All because I had to be born in one of their bathrooms?!”
Sonia and Manic burst out laughing, with Manic doubled over and nearly falling off the couch.
“It’s not funny.” Sonic snapped.
“It is.” Manic wheezed.
Sonic threw a pillow at Manic, who only laughed harder at that.
“Okay, settle down so I can finish the story.” Aleena said.
Sonia and Manic stopped laughing, though Manic was biting his lip to stop himself from laughing.
“Anyway, after we got back in the car, your dad drove me to the hospital.” Aleena said. “Sonia was born in the parking lot while Manic was born in the lobby. The receptionist rushed us back to see the doctor right after that.”
Manic wiped his eyes. “Wait, so wouldn’t it have made it on the news that Sonic was born in a restaurant bathroom?”
“Please let this be a bad dream.” Sonic muttered under his breath.
“Yeah, your uncle taped it for us.” Aleena said. She found the tape and put it in their old vcr/dvd player.
Sonic reluctantly settled on the couch beside Manic.
Sonia laughed as soon as she and her brothers appeared in the video. “You were a chubby little baby, Sonic.”
“That’s you, Sonia.” Aleena said.
Sonia grimaced as her brothers laughed.
Manic motioned to the tv. “Which one is the runt?”
“You.” Aleena replied. “You were a tiny little hoglet for a while.”
Sonic scoffed. “So they only offered you a free meal coupon?” He asked. “Not that I want their food, but shouldn’t they have given us a lifetime of free food?”
“They probably couldn’t afford it and even that was pushing it.” Manic replied. “To be fair, that place shut down when we were… three or four I think.”
“Somewhere around that time.” Aleena said.
Manic’s phone chimed.
Manic looked at his phone. “Oh, that’s Surge.” He said, getting up. “Thanks, Mom. I’ll be home before curfew.”
“Have fun.” Aleena replied.
“Don’t you dare tell her about how I got my name.” Sonic said. “None of you tell anyone. We take this to our graves.”
Manic picked up his hoverboard. “Chill, bro. I’m not gonna embarrass you.” He replied. “See you later.”
Manic left the house.
Aleena shut the video off. “Sonia, do you want to try out your Cricut?”
Sonia got up. “Sure.” She said, picking up the Cricut box.
Sonia and Aleena headed to Sonia’s room.
“I just thought of something.” Sonia said. “Is that video on YouTube?”
Aleena shrugged. “Maybe.” She replied. “Don’t mention that to him. I know he’ll try to change his name and I can’t picture him with a different one.”
Sonia nodded. “Don’t worry, I won’t.”
