Aleena gathered her four year old triplets into the car. “Thanks for coming with me, Uncle Chuck.” She said, closing the door. “I don’t think I can handle taking the kids shopping alone.”

“It’s no trouble.” Uncle Chuck replied.

Aleena got into the driver’s seat and Uncle Chuck got into the passenger seat.

*

The family had been on the road for a total of ten minutes and Aleena was already regretting her decision to take the kids shopping.

Manic was drumming his fingers on his car seat while Sonic kicked the back of Aleena’s seat.

“Sonic, stop kicking my seat.” Aleena said.

“Sorry, Mom.” Sonic replied.

“Are we there yet?” Sonia asked. “I’m bored.”

“It’ll be another fifteen minutes or less.” Aleena replied.

Manic groaned. “We’re gonna miss Animaniacs.”

“No, I’m taping it.” Aleena said. “You’ll see it, don’t worry.”

She glanced at Uncle Chuck. “I hope I remembered to tape it anyway.” She said in a low tone.

“I’m surprised you let them watch it.” Uncle Chuck replied.

Aleena glanced back at the kids. “Eh… the adult jokes fly over their heads anyway.” She said, turning the car into the parking lot of the mall.

“The mall?” Manic asked. “Can we play in the arcade?”

“No, it’s too expensive and you went for your birthday.” Aleena replied. “Now, you three behave and stay with us. Okay?”

“Okay.” The triplets said.

*

Aleena and Uncle Chuck walked the triplets through the JC Penney’s.

Sonia grinned as she carried a frilly pink dress and a simple pink dress.

Sonic and Manic reluctantly picked out two button up shirts and a couple of sweatshirts.

Manic sighed. “I want spiked wristbands, Ma.”

“No, you’re… too little, I don’t know.” Aleena replied. She looked at Uncle Chuck and shrugged. “I guess he saw someone wearing them on TV. I have no clue where to get one.”

“Can we go to KB toys?” Sonic asked.

Sonia grinned and bounced in place. “Yeah, can we go look at the Furbies?”

“No.” Manic protested. “They’re evil.”

“No, sweetie, you’re thinking of Gremlins.” Aleena said, leading the way to the checkout.

“Yeah, but so are furbies.” Manic replied. “And they have those stupid, loud decorations that come on when you walk by.”

Aleena sighed. “Manic, you have to get over that fear of things that are motion activated.”

“Yeah, don’t be such a baby.” Sonic said.

Manic punched Sonic’s arm. “Shut up.”

“Boys, stop it.” Aleena said sternly. “I told Sonia we’d look at the furbies since it’s close to Christmas.”

Sonia noticed a decoration of Rudolph hanging on the wall and started crying. “They killed Rudolph!”

“Sweet, now we don’t have to watch that stupid show again.” Manic said.

This earned Manic a quick swat on the tail.

“Manic, you don’t say things like that.” Aleena said. “Sonia, it’s just a plastic decoration. It’s not Rudolph.”

Sonia breathed a sigh of relief.

“Rudolph isn’t real anyway.” Sonic muttered under his breath.

*

Manic clung to Uncle Chuck as Sonic and Sonia looked at the Furbies and as he was forced to walk by loud animatronic decorations.

Aleena sighed. “Ugh. They’re so noisy.”

Manic peeked out from behind Uncle Chuck’s legs.

“They’re just robots, Manic.” Uncle Chuck said, patting Manic on the back.

“That’s still scary.” Manic replied. “Robots are gonna take over one day unless Sarah and John have really stopped them.”

“What?” Uncle Chuck asked.

Aleena looked at Manic. “Did your dad let you watch Terminator 2?”

“Yeah, on the channel that bleeps out the bad words.” Manic replied. He shrugged. “That doesn’t make sense ‘cause Dad says the same things a lot.”

Aleena sighed and shook her head.

Manic flinched as a Furby in a box opened its eyes. “See?! It doesn’t have batteries and I didn’t touch it!”

“Okay, that is creepy.” Uncle Chuck said.

Aleena picked a display Furby up and looked at it. “There’s no off switch and they’re too expensive anyway.” She said, setting the toy down. “Sorry, Sonia.”

“Aww.” Sonia whined.

“Hallelujah.” Manic muttered.

*

Aleena, the triplets, and Uncle Chuck stood in line to let the kids see Santa.

Manic wrapped his arms around Uncle Chuck’s neck. “I don’t wanna see Santa.” He whimpered. “Please, don’t make me.”

“I suppose you could take him somewhere else, Uncle Chuck.” Aleena replied.

Manic pointed toward Spencer’s gifts. “I wanna go there.”

“No.” Aleena said. “Your father will be in so much trouble if he’s taken you there.”

“Well, can I go to the bathroom?” Manic asked.

“Yes, we’ll meet you at the food court bathroom, Aleena.” Uncle Chuck said.

*

Aleena and Uncle Chuck led the kids out of the mall.

“Where did we park?” Aleena asked.

Uncle Chuck motioned to a few rows ahead of them. “It’s in this area.”

The family walked around, looking for the car.

“No, we’re gonna be here forever.” Manic cried. “I don’t want to spend the rest of my life here like that guy and his ma on Rocko.”

Aleena laughed. “No, sweetie, we won’t be here that long.”

“Here’s the car.” Uncle Chuck said, motioning to Aleena’s dark red car.

The family walked over and got back into the car.

“Okay.” Aleena said, starting the car. “Where do we want to go to eat?”

“Burger King.” Manic said.

“No, I want McDonald’s.” Sonia replied. “They have a playland.”

“So does Burger King, dummy.” Manic said.

“Manic, you do that one more time and you are in serious trouble.” Aleena said, raising her voice slightly. She pulled the car out of the space.

“Yes, Ma.” Manic replied.

“Okay, what about Pizza Hut?” Aleena asked.

“No, we can’t go back there.” Sonic protested. “Manic stole the crayons they have for the kids and Sonia broke one while drawing a picture of him in jail.”

Aleena laughed. “Those were free, Sonic.” She replied. “Huh, well, it's closed. We can go to Denny’s.”

*

The family sat at a corner booth in Denny’s that was the furthest away from the smoking section.

Manic, Sonic, and Sonia were at least halfway occupied with coloring in their menus.

Manic coughed. “Ma, I can still smell the smoke.”

“I know, but it’s better than sitting directly close to it.” Aleena said.

“Not for me.” Manic muttered. “I guess they think it’s a magic wall that keeps smoke on one side of the room.”

Sonia looked at Manic. “You mean it’s not magic?”

Manic rolled his eyes. “You and your princess stuff.”

“Mom, I’m starving.” Sonic said.

“It’s been thirty minutes and no one’s taken our order.” Aleena said, checking her watch. “Brenden will beat us home.”

“Can we call Dad on a payphone?” Manic asked. He coughed. “Please?”

“No, sweetie, we left a note.” Aleena replied.

Manic coughed again.

“He’s gonna be sick, Aleena.” Uncle Chuck said.

“Fine, let’s go.” Aleena replied. “We’ll go to Taco Bell and get it to go.”

*

Aleena gripped the steering wheel tightly as the triplets made their toy Taco Bell Chihuahuas say “viva Gordita” about a hundred times or at least it felt like a hundred times.

Finally the toys started clicking.

The kids whined.

“That’s what you get when you aggravate everyone.” Aleena said, glanced in the rearview mirror.

Manic and Sonic stuck their tongues out at her.

Aleena pulled the car into the driveway.

Brenden got out of his car as Aleena, Uncle Chuck, and the kids got out. “Hey, did you have fun?”

“We’re not having more kids.” Aleena said. “This is it.”

Brenden hugged Aleena. “I’m sorry.”
