"Bug Burgers! Get your bug burgers here! Everybody line up and get your bug burgers!" It was the lunch time call. An old man standing on top of a shack shouted "Bug burgers! Get your bug burgers!" It seemed funny. After all, nobody was really proud that they were reduced to the level of eating insects to survive. All the food they had was made of insects. They had bread made of insect protein, they had imitation hamburgers, that they called bug burgers, also made of insect protein, they were surviving by eating insects. They weren't proud of the fact that they ate bugs, they were proud of the fact that they were alive. They had survived. When the atomic bombs fell in world war three, all the major cities in Australia were destroyed. Agriculture and industry collapsed. The only things that remained were a few ragged bands of survivors who roamed the Australian desert, looking for food, looking for water, looking for friends. If they were lucky, they found all three.
One band of survivors built a little town where they painstakingly constructed a farm. They raised insects on this farm. They built a factory, and it was unlike any other factory in the world. It was made of dozens of small shacks and small buildings, all in all, it covered an area of more then two acres. The entire factor was devoted to processing insects, so they could turn insect protein into food products. They called their town Bug Town.
Bug Town was not the only town in this part of the Australian desert. There were others. There was Slum Town, where everybody was a slave. There was Dog Town, there they raised dogs and everybody ate dog meat. There was Fish Town, where they had swimming pools, each pool was filled with fish, and everybody who lived there ate fish. Of all these towns, Bug Town was the most prosperous. It seemed like people from all over the desert would buy the bug burgers, and they didn't care what they were made of.
As the people of the town came together and sat down to eat lunch, one man cried out. "Stranger!" he shouted. "There's a stranger coming in on the horizon!" Everybody ran up to the edge of the town to see the stranger. Some of them brought spears, guns, and knives, because they didn't trust strangers. As the stranger came closer, they were surprised to see that he was walking. Most people they found out here were driving a car, or a truck, or they were riding a motorcycle or a bicycle, but this guy was walking.
After several minutes, he walked up to the crowd and stopped. One man called out to him, and said, 'Hello, stranger! Welcome to Bug Town!' Another called out, 'What's your name?' The man looked at them and said 'Max. My name is Max'. Another man laughed, an said, 'Well, you're mad, Max. You must be mad, because you're trying to walk across the desert like that. Don't you have a car to drive, or a bike to ride?' Max said 'No', then he paused, and said, "I'm afraid I don't have anything. I'm looking for someplace to stay, someplace to work."
A young woman pushed through the crowd and yelled 'Let me see him! Let me see the stranger!' She walked right up to Max and looked him directly in the eye. He said 'Who are you?' A man standing in the background said 'Her name is Furietta.' The woman standing in front of Max said, "Yes my name is Furietta but my nickname is Fury, everybody calls me Fury.' Max smiled at her, but didn't say anything. Furietta said 'if you need a place to stay, Max, you can stay in my house' max said okay and Furietta led him to a small shack. The shack was made of pieces of wood and sheet metal, and it was mostly tied together with strings because they didn't have any nails to nail it together with. She got Max inside her little shack and said 'Home, sweet home.'
