Sonia put on the new black dress she had bought and started putting on her makeup.

“Sis, Shadow texted you.” Manic said, knocking on the door.

Sonia stepped over and opened the door.

“What is it?”

Manic handed Sonia the phone. “Well-”

Sonia’s phone rang.

Sonia answered. “Hi, Shadow-”

“It’s his grandfather.” Gerald said.

“Oh, hello.” Sonia replied. “Nice to meet you, so to speak. Is Shadow okay?”

“He’s getting ready as we speak.” Gerald said. “Maria isn’t feeling great and he was gonna stay with us, but she insisted he go on his date. I’m home tonight anyway, we should be fine, so don’t worry.”

Sonia smiled. “Aww, he’s a great brother.”

“He is.” Gerald replied. “Anyway, I called so he could get ready and I was hoping I’d catch you before you saw the text he sent.”

“Well, thank you, sir.” Sonia said.

“I’ll let you get ready.” Gerald replied. “He’ll pick you up soon.”

“Thanks.” Sonia said. “Goodbye.”

Sonia hung up.

“Shadow texted to say he couldn’t make it.” Manic said.

“Yeah, his grandpa called to say Maria insisted he go anyway.” Sonia replied. She walked over to her mirror. “So Gerald will sit with Maria and Shadow’s picking me up as soon as he gets ready.”

“Great, I’m glad, sis.” Manic said, leaning against the doorway. “I know you’ve been looking forward to this.”

Sonia brushed her fur and spines. “Thanks, bro.” She replied. She turned to face Manic. “How do I look?”

“Great, sis.” Manic said.

“Please be honest with me.” Sonia said, picking up her purse. “Are you and Sonic trying to sabotage this?”

“No, we’re not.” Manic replied. “We only try to sabotage your relationships if we know the guy’s a jerk.”

Sonia hugged Manic. “Thanks, bro.”

“Ah, you’re welcome, sis.” Manic said, patting Sonia on the back.

Shadow, wearing a black button up and boots, made his way to the door with a bouquet of roses.

Manic answered the door before Shadow could knock. “Hey, Shads, I saw you through the window.” He said, stepping aside. “Sis will be down in a minute.”

Shadow stepped inside. “Don’t call me that again.”

“Okay; well, anyway, glad you could make it after all.” Manic said, closing the door. “She has been excited about this, even bought a new dress.”

Sonia walked down the stairs. “Is Shadow here yet?”

Shadow stepped over to see Sonia.

Sonia grinned as she saw Shadow. “Aww, you got me roses?” She asked. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Shadow replied. He handed the roses to Sonia as she made it to the bottom of the steps.

Sonia grinned. “Oh, they’re beautiful.”

“I can put them in a vase, sis.” Manic said.

Sonia handed the roses to Manic. “Thanks, bro.” She replied. “See you later.”

“Have fun.” Manic said.

Sonia and Shadow sat in the corner of a little restaurant downtown.

“So they have sushi and tacos?” Sonia asked.

“It’s great.” Shadow replied. “I don’t come here often.”

Sonia playfully nudged Shadow’s arm. “Oh, I’ve bet you’ve been on a ton of dates before.”

“I haven’t been on a date in two years.” Shadow said. “My first girlfriend cheated on me with this echidna guy we went to high school with.”

Sonia furrowed her brow. “Was she a bat named Rouge?”

“Yeah, why?” Shadow asked.

“I kinda know her.” Sonia replied. “Knuckles is on Sonic’s team when they have to fight Eggman and he’s in our band as a bassist.”

Shadow’s lip curled.

“I didn’t know all of that and I don’t talk to either of them much.” Sonia replied.

“It’s fine; it has nothing to do with you.” Shadow said. He sipped his cherry soda. “I appreciate you being so understanding of thy family situation.”

“It’s not a problem.” Sonia replied. “I think it’s sweet you’re such a good brother.”

Shadow and Sonia walked down the streets, looking at the Christmas lights and listening to the soft jazz playing over the speakers.

“It’s beautiful.” Sonia said. “Feels like being in an old movie.”

Shadow nodded. “We drove Maria through here before Thanksgiving.” He replied. “I figured you’d like it.”

Shadow’s phone started ringing.

Sonia and Shadow stopped and sat on a bench.

Shadow pulled his phone out of his pocket and answered. “What happened?”

“She took a sudden turn for the worst, Shadow.” Gerald said, voice breaking. “Please get home as soon as you can. It’s important we talk now.”

“See you in a minute.” Shadow replied. He hung up and drew a shaky breath. “Maria took a turn for the worse. I think I know what he’s gonna say when I get home.”

“Do we need to go?” Sonia asked.

Shadow nodded. “I’m sorry.”

“Hey, that’s your sister.” Sonia said, getting up. “She needs you. Just let me know how she is later.”

“Thanks for being understanding.” Shadow replied. He got up, picked up Sonia, then ran to her house.

Sonia walked in.

Sonic and Manic looked at Sonia.

“You’re home early.” Manic said, turning the tv off.

“Maria took a turn for the worst.” Sonia replied. “Gerald called us.”

“Uh… are you sure he didn’t use that as an excuse?” Sonic asked.

Manic smacked Sonic on the arm. “Dude, remember when he freaked out because I sneezed?” He asked. “Besides, I could hear her coughing in the background when Shadow called to let her know he was free.”

Sonic held his hands up defensively. “Hey, I wasn’t trying to be a jerk.” He replied. “I feel horrible for saying it. I was just saying some people can be sleazy enough to make up things like that.”

“It’s okay, Sonic.” Sonia said, sitting down beside Manic. “I understand.”
