Sonia, Sonic, and Manic walked into the little church down the road from their house for Maria’s funeral.
Sonic and Manic took their seats in the back.
“Go sit with Shadow.” Manic whispered to Sonia. “He’s looking for you.”
Sonia nodded, then made her way to the front to see Shadow.
Shadow spotted Sonia, then moved his coat so she could sit beside him. “Thanks for coming.”
“I’m sorry about Maria.” Sonia said. “She was such a sweet girl.”
Shadow nodded.
Sonia looked at the tv screens mounted on the wall, both screens showing a photo montage of Maria.
One of the pictures was of a four year old Maria bottle feeding a newborn hedgehog.
Sonia looked at Shadow. “Were you the baby in the picture?”
Shadow nodded. “Gerald and Maria went to the East Mobius mall one day.” He said. “She went into the bathroom alone and heard me crying. She fished me out of a trash can and brought me out to Gerald. I was less than an hour old.”
Sonia gasped softly. “Your mother abandoned you?”
Shadow nodded. “Anyway, Maria begged Gerald to adopt me.” He said. “He agreed and Maria handled nearly everything. She… she was a big sister, but….”
“She was like a mother to you.” Sonia replied.
Shadow sighed. “Yeah.”
Sonia hugged Shadow.

Sonia stood by Shadow at Maria’s grave.
Shadow dipped his chin to his chest.
Manic eased over to them. “Sis?” He asked. “We’re gonna leave. Are you gonna stay with Shadow?”
Sonia looked at Shadow. “Do you need me to stay or do you need alone time?”
“Alone time.” Shadow said. “I’ll call you later.”
Sonia hugged Shadow. “I’m here if you need anything.” She replied. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Shadow said. He kissed Sonia.
Sonia smiled weakly, then walked away with Manic.

Sonic drove Manic and Sonia home in their van. He glanced at Sonia, who was on her phone. “Sis?”
Sonia sighed. “Poor Shadow.”
“Yeah.” Sonic said sadly. “I noticed he was crying.”
“I know, but I meant why he was adopted.” Sonia replied. She shut her phone off. “No one knows who his dad is, but his mom gave birth to him in the East Mobius mall bathroom and left him to die in a trash can.”
Manic and Sonic cringed.
“Poor guy.” Sonic said.
“Maria found him.” Sonia replied. “Going by that story and some of the pictures shown in the montage implies that she was the closest thing to a mother he had.”
Manic leaned on the door. “Bet his real mother is still alive.”
Sonic glanced at Manic.
“It’s not fair.” Manic muttered.
“Life’s not fair, Manic.” Sonic replied. “We learned that years ago.”
“Doesn’t make it easier.” Manic said.
Sonia leaned back in her seat. “Can we talk about something else please?”
“I don’t feel like talking if that’s okay.” Manic said.
“It’s fine, I don’t think anyone feels like talking.” Sonic replied.
Sonia nodded.
The triplets spent the rest of the car ride home in silence.
