That night, Manic and Surge sat in their car, which was hidden by some nearby bushes and the darkness.

They watched their latest target: a house with a hangar attached to it.

Manic pointed at the house. “You sure that’s a good place to steal from?”

Surge nodded. “The guy’s got a lot of expensive looking tech.”

“Then he probably has a security system.” Manic replied.

“Nah, it’s wide open.” Surge replied. “Kit wouldn’t lie to us.”

Manic nodded. “Alright, let’s go.”

Manic and Surge got out of the car and headed toward the house with their backpacks and messenger bags. They slid on their night vision goggles as they walked.

Manic and Surge picked open every locked drawer and cabinet and hurriedly grabbed whatever they saw that was interesting.

Surge picked up a pair of air combat boots. “Sweet, these are air shoes like Shadow’s.”

Manic picked up a hoverboard. “Awesome.” He whispered. “This is better than my skateboard.”

“I think we got enough, Cute Stuff.” Surge whispered.

Manic nodded.

A sudden flicker of light got Manic’s attention.

“What are you doing here?” A male voice called.

Manic heard the click of Surge’s gun, or at least he hoped it was hers. Wait… he didn’t want that either. He was a thief, not a murderer.

Manic flinched as he saw a sudden rush of movement.

A loud crash, then Surge was groaning.

Manic grit his teeth.

“I’m sorry.” The voice said. “I didn’t know you were a girl.”

The lights flipped on.

Manic stood there wide eyed. “Oh….”

There was Surge, laying on the ground by an overturned desk, near his estranged brother Sonic (who was checking on Surge).

Tails was standing by the door, near the light switch. “Manic?”

Sonic’s jaw dropped.

Manic slumped his shoulders. “Hey, bro.”

Sonic sighed. “Not how I wanted to see you again.”

“Manic, did you forget me?” Surge snapped. She hissed in pain as she moved to sit up

Manic knelt down beside Surge.

Surge eased herself into Manic’s arms as he checked her injuries.

“I am so sorry.” Sonic said.

Manic brushed Surge’s spines out of her face. “Do you have a concussion, babe?”

Tails finally made his way over to them. “Let me see.” He said, kneeling down in front of Surge. He checked her for a concussion. “No, she’s good.”

Surge huffed weakly. “He hit me pretty hard in the stomach.” She muttered. “Manic, why aren’t you ending this guy?”

“That’s my older brother.” Manic said.

Surge gave Manic a blank stare.

“Babe, he didn’t mean to.” Manic said.

“I swear, I wouldn’t have spin dashed you if I knew you were a girl.” Sonic said. “I thought you were thieves.”

“They are thieves.” Tails protested. He motioned around his workshop and Manic and Surge’s bags.

Sonic smacked Manic’s arm. “Dude, what the heck?”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know this was Tails’ place.” Manic said.

“He hasn’t seen us since we built the new place.” Tails said.

“That doesn’t make it right.” Sonic replied.

Tails nodded in agreement.

“Lecture me later.” Manic said, getting up. He helped Surge up. “I gotta take my girl to the hospital.”

Manic stepped over to their backpacks and pulled out Tails’ things they had stuff in there. “No need to call the police. Everything is still here.”

“I’ll take you to the hospital.” Sonic said, getting up. He walked Manic and Surge out.

Sonic glanced over his shoulder at Tails and smirked.

“This’ll be fun.” He mouthed to Tails.

Tails grinned and nodded.

Sonic sat in the waiting room, waiting for Manic and Surge.

Aleena walked in. “Where are they?”

“Still seeing the doc.” Sonic said.

Aleena sat down beside Sonic. “Why are they here?”

“It was dark and I spin dashed his girlfriend.” Sonic said.

“Was this her idea?” Aleena asked.

Sonic sighed. “Mom, he’s twenty-two and peer pressure was never a thing with him.”

“Yet you called me to scold him.” Aleena said.

“Because this is funny and he needs an intervention.” Sonic replied. He glanced toward the elevator. “Here they are.”

Manic and Surge walked over.

Manic’s eyes widened as he saw Aleena. “Ma?”

Aleena got up. “First, is your girlfriend okay?”

“Yeah; just bruised, but she’s fine.” Manic said.

Aleena grabbed Manic and Surge by their ears and dragged them to the door.

“Ow!” Manic whimpered.

“Oh, hush.” Aleena said. “You got your ears pierced, this doesn’t hurt that bad.”

“It’s more humiliating than it hurts.” Surge replied.

“Then you two should’ve thought of that before you did something stupid.” Aleena said.

“I’ll meet you at the house after I pick up Tails, Mom.” Sonic said, getting up.

Sonic and Tails, eating popcorn, sat on the couch.

Aleena stood in front of Manic and Surge, who were sitting on the loveseat.

“What were you thinking?” Aleena asked. “I didn’t raise you this way, Manic. You know better than this. You could get a decent job.”

“Ma, seriously?” Manic asked.

“Yeah, seriously.” Aleena replied. She crossed her arms. “Why are you stealing? Too lazy to get a real job? Are you two on drugs?”

“No, Ma.” Manic said. “We quit using-”

Manic slapped his hand over his mouth.

“There was an incident.” Surge said.

Aleena sighed. “I’m afraid to ask.”

“What happened?” Sonic asked.

“Manic was high and forgot to turn the lights on in the living room.” Surge replied. “He freaked out because he saw his giant velociraptor plushie on the couch. He screamed and ran right into the wall. I filmed it; we watched the video the next day and saw how stupid we looked. We quit that day and hadn’t touched any since then.”

“So you’re lazy.” Aleena said. “You two are looking for a job tomorrow. You are grounded. Yes, I know you’re adults, but you better be glad we aren’t having you arrested.”

“Yes, Ma.” Manic muttered.

“I’m not in this family.” Surge said.

“Did you two break up?” Aleena asked.

“No way.” Surge replied. “We’re getting married next week.”

Manic breathed a sigh of relief.

“Then you’re family.” Aleena said. “It’s this or jail.”

“Fine.” Surge muttered.

Aleena left the room.

Sonic and Tails high fived each other.

“This was so worth it, Sonic.” Tails said.

“We had it coming.” Manic said.

Surge nodded.
