Queen Aleena of Mobotropolis ran through the crowded city streets in a desperate search to find her children as her husband and their army did their best to fight off the robotic swarm.
No one knew where the robots, or the ship they had come out of, was from or even when they arrived on Mobius.
The attack was sudden and brutal, leaving the city in chaos.
Many of their citizens were fleeing the city, while some stayed to help the royal army fight off the invaders.
Smoke from the burning buildings filled the air.
Aleena skidded to a halt in front of the charred gates of her friend, Lady Windermere’s home.
The house was on fire.
Aleena made her way between the bars of the gates, ignoring the burns to her hands. She fell on the ground and started coughing.
Lady Windermere hurried over to Aleena and helped her up. “I’m sorry, Aleena.” She sobbed. “I’m so sorry.”
Aleena coughed. “What… Where’s my babies?”
“One of those drones took them.” Lady Windermere cried. “All of them.”
“What, you mean all of the babies you were watching over?” Aleena asked.
“Yes.” Lady Windermere replied. “I am so sorry. We tried to fight them off. I don’t know where they headed. I was knocked out and… and I woke up. They were gone and the house caught fire.”
Aleena burst into tears.
Lady Windermere hurried Aleena to safety in her hidden storm shelter.

Hours later, the battle had ended. It seemed as if whoever was in charge of it only wanted to get his hands on the infants belonging to Queen Aleena and her servants and was using the battle as a distraction.
Aleena was curled up on the sofa in her study, having cried until she had nothing left in her to do so. Her husband had been killed in the battle and her one year old triplets (one of whom was sickly) were missing.
Argus, the captain of her bodyguards, stepped into the room, and bowed. “No news on where the children are, your highness.” He said. “Also, the echidna tribe has been completely wiped out about a couple of weeks prior to the attacks. The chief’s son Knuckles and the Master Emerald, along with the Chaos emeralds, appear to be missing as well.”
Aleena propped her head up with her hand, her elbow resting on the arm of the couch. “It has the emeralds. So why did this… being stop attacking? Why did it want the children?”
“We’re doing our best to figure it out and bring the children home safely, your highness.” Argus said. “Once again, I’m terribly sorry for your loss.”
Aleena nodded. “Thank you.” She replied. “Could you please hurry? Manic will be in a lot of pain and won’t last long without his medications.”
“We’ll do our best, your highness.” Argus said.

Dr. Ivo Robotnik put his robots and drones back into their charging stations, then headed back into his lab.
His computers were distilling energy from the Chaos Emeralds while a couple of robots were tending to the frightened babies, who were confined to a large metal playpen.
Ivo scowled at the crying infants.
Aleena’s triplets Sonic, Sonia, and Manic were huddled in the center of the pen while the other babies (two foxes, a tenrec, and a rabbit along with an echidna and another hedgehog) gathered around the triplets. Each one of them had a plastic collar with their names and serial numbers stamped on it around their necks.
Not that Robotnik cared to know their names, they were just potentially useful weapons if his experiments were a success.
The hedgehog known as Shadow huffed and hissed at Ivo while glaring at him.
“You’re gonna be trouble, aren’t you, rodent?” Ivo sneered. He tapped a few buttons on his gauntlet. “We’ll make a note of that. Perhaps I can find a way to make you more compliant.”
Ivo’s assistant, a Mobian platypus named Dr. Starline, walked in and looked up from his tablet. “Ah, good, you’ve got the right ones.”
“Are you sure?” Ivo asked. He looked at Shadow’s collar. “Uh… experiment zero-two doesn’t seem like he’s docile at all.”
“I’m working on a solution.” Dr. Starline replied. “I’m nearly finished with the hypnotic glove for that purpose.”
“Excellent.” Ivo said.
“As per your orders, I’m extracting the energy from the Chaos Emeralds.” Dr. Starline said. “We can begin injections immediately.”
“You do that.” Ivo replied. “As always, my robots will assist you.”
Dr. Starline shrugged. “As you wish, sir.”
Ivo turned to walk away, but stopped. “Oh, is there a way you can age them up?” He asked. “I don’t want their dirty diapers stinking up the place or to hear them whining.”
Dr. Starline glanced at the babies, thought it over for a few minutes, then shook his head. “While I could try, I wouldn’t advise it.” He replied. “Doing so would cause them significant psychological distress and possibly physical damage. It’s better to let them grow up without scientific intervention.”
“Very well, I suppose.” Ivo muttered. “Carry on.”
“Yes, sir.” Dr. Starline said, picking up Manic by his spines.
Manic started crying and trying to wiggle out of his grasp.
“Are you sure you want to use him as a test subject?” Dr. Starline asked. “He has stage three NIDS.”
“Try it anyway.” Ivo replied. “If it helps him, we can make a fortune off of the cure.”
Ivo walked away to his private office and shut the door to sort the records of the new experiments and watch the proceedings remotely.
“I can’t wait until I have an army to take over this and every planet I can find.” Ivo said, flipping on his security monitors. He began to take notes on his tablet. “Then that smug platypus will no longer be useful and I can dispose of him. GUN will rue the day that they fired me and called me insane.”

Dr. Starline finished the rounds of injections for the infants and ordered the robots to give the infants their formula.
He disposed of what was left of his latex gloves after the hedgehogs, echidna, and tenrec shredded them with their spines. “Note to self.” He muttered under his breath. “Use thicker gloves when handling the hedgehogs, tenrec, and echidna.”
Manic whimpered.
Dr. Starline stepped over to give Manic a dose of pain medication, then walked to his desk.
Dr. Starline sighed as he got to work on his latest invention: the hypnotic glove. “I would’ve just put the brat out of his misery.” He muttered. “He’s more trouble than he’s worth.”
Dr. Starline did his best to tune out the babies’ whimpers (noise canceling headphones weren’t a good idea as he needed to be able to hear emergency calls) as he worked and contemplated his position.
“That foolish dolt doesn’t know who he’s messing with.” Dr. Starline thought. “I can’t wait until those kids are older and strong enough to aid me in double crossing that idiot.”
Dr. Starline smirked.“I can’t wait to see the look on the queen’s stupid face when her precious brats destroy her entire world.”
