Sonic, Sonia, and Manic walked into their health club classroom.

Manic looked at the box beside the teacher’s desk. “Ah, that baby simulator thing?” He asked. “I thought that was a cliche sitcom plot.”

“It may as well be.” Sonic replied.

Surge walked in and looked at the box. “Why are we getting dolls?”

“It’s supposed to teach us how to be parents.” Manic replied.

“It’s supposed to discourage teen pregnancy too, but according to some studies, it’s highly debatable.” Sonia added.

The triplets and Surge took their seats.

Surge leaned closer to Manic’s desk. “You think it’s too late to drop this class?”

Manic shrugged. “Maybe, why?”

“I couldn’t even keep my Tamagotchi alive and they expect me to pass this?” Surge asked.

“We were five back then.” Manic replied. “I’m sure you’ll do better now. At least you tried with your tamagotchi. Sonic purposely killed his Gigapet to show me that all you had to do was reset it to bring it back to life.”

Sonic laughed. “And you got all upset like it was real.”

Sonia smacked Sonic’s arm. “Lay off, you know he’s more empathetic.” She replied. “I think it’s sweet.”

“Hey, I’m sure you’ll do a better job than Shadow could.” Sonic said. “Can’t see him taking care of a baby.”

Sonia shrugged. “Eh, I don’t see him doing diaper changes, but I do see him being the overprotective type.”

Sonic and Manic slowly nodded.

Surge slumped in her seat.

Manic noticed Surge’s reaction and touched her shoulder. “It’s better to learn and make mistakes with a fake baby instead of the real thing.”

Surge’s eyes widened. “I hope he’s just saying that in general and not that he wants kids one day.” She thought.

Manic and Surge sat in the cafeteria with their hedgehog doll.

“So what do we name him?” Manic asked.

“I don’t know.” Surge replied.

“Eh… just call him Hip, I guess.” Manic said, shrugging.

Surge furrowed her brow, then shrugged. “Meh.”

Manic gave Hip his bottle.

“So why does our baby look like Sonic?” Surge asked.

“It was randomly selected.” Manic replied. “At least it’s not really our baby. Then, I’d be concerned.”

“So would I.” Surge said. “No offense, your bro isn’t my type.”

Manic laughed. “Totally.”

Manic and Surge looked at each other.

“That came out wrong.” Surge said. “You wouldn’t be offended if he’s not my type.”

Manic chuckled. “I knew what you meant.”

Sonia and Sonic, along with their hedgehog dolls, sat down across from Manic and Surge.

“Aww, you’re such a cute family.” Sonia said, grinning.

Manic half smiled. “Though I hate it that they couldn’t give us a doll that looks like me or Surge.”

“Be grateful you didn’t get the drug one.” Sonic said. “Knuckles and Rouge got that one. It has been screaming the entire time. They had to eat outside.”

“I hope they’re not sitting out in the rain.” Sonia said, glancing at the doors. “It was cloudy this morning.”

Manic shook his head. “Ah, that would be really sad if it was real.”

“Yeah, that would be.” Sonic said, frowning.

Shadow and Sally sat down beside Sonia and Sonic respectively.

“At least we all got good babies.” Sonia said.

Manic handed Hip to Surge. “Okay, I fed him, you burp him.”

“How?” Surge asked.

“Okay, watch me so you’ll know how to do it.” Manic said, moving the doll to let it look over his shoulder. He gently patted the doll’s back until it burped. “Now, for a diaper change.”

“The real deal is worse.” Sonic said. “Tails’ diaper changes were a nightmare.”

Sonic, Sonia, and Manic shuddered.

Surge froze, staring off into space with a thousand yard stare.

Sally elbowed Sonic. “You’re scaring her.”

Surge scoffed. “I’m not scared.”

“You’ll get used to it, Babe.” Manic said, getting up. “Come on, let’s get the little guy’s diaper changed.”

Surge got up and followed Manic out.

“Wanna hold him?” Manic asked.

“Okay, I guess.” Surge replied.

Manic handed Hip to Surge.

Surge awkwardly held the doll away from her.

Manic looked at Surge. “He’s not a bomb, babe.”

“I’m an orphan.” Surge said. “Kit was three when I met him. I never had anything to do with babies.”

“Ah, well, you’re not the worst Ma ever.” Manic replied. He looked around. “Where am I supposed to change his diaper?”

“Outside.” Surge said, motioning to the glass door to the outdoor tables.

Manic led Surge outside and laid Hip on a seat at one of the tables.

A baby screaming got their attention.

Knuckles and Rouge were sitting across from them with their bat doll.

“I’d just fail this class, Knuxie.” Rouge said, gently rocking the doll.

“I need a B in this class, bat girl.” Knuckles replied. He shook his head. “I should’ve gotten Sticks to be my partner.”

Rouge gave Knuckles an incredulous look. “She failed as soon as the doll was turned on.”

Manic and Surge looked at Rouge.

“How does that happen?” Manic asked.

Rouge scoffed. “The nut shook it and it shut off.” She replied. “The teacher really took her to task. But, hey, at least she learned this before she was ever around a real baby.”

“Even I knew better than that.” Surge said.

“She’s never babysitting for me.” Manic replied. He started to change the diaper.

Surge stared off into space.

“Babe, pay attention.” Manic said, pulling the diaper off. “You gotta do your share of these.”

Surge angled herself to watch Manic as he showed her how to change a diaper.

Manic and Surge headed to the parking lot. “I’m glad someone donated car seats.” He said. “I’d hate to fail the class because of that.”

“Yeah, that was nice of whoever it was.” Surge replied.

“So do you want to take Hip home?” Manic asked. “Or should I take him home today?”

“You do it this time.” Surge replied.

Manic furrowed his brow. “Uh, okay, Babe.” He said. “So… I-”

Sonic and Sonia walked over.

“Okay, bro, we better get going.” Sonic said. “Can you help sis babysit Spike for the ride home? I can’t run with him.”

“Sure.” Manic replied. He kissed Surge. “See you, Babe.”

“Yeah, see you.” Surge said.

Surge headed to her mini bike to pick up Kit from the middle school while Manic got into his car.

*

Manic drummed his fingers on the door. “Am I crazy or is Surge acting weird?”

“She’s acting weird.” Sonia said.

“Do you think she’s gonna dump me?” Manic asked.

“I think it’s the project.” Sonia replied. “She’s clearly out of her element. She may not ever want kids either.”

Manic sighed. “Great.”

“Hey, she might.” Sonia said. “She probably hasn’t taken care of a baby before and she’s overwhelmed.”

“I noticed that.” Manic replied. “She can’t even hold a baby and doesn’t even want to try.”

“Then you need to talk to her about it.” Sonia said. “You’re not helping her learn if you do everything and it’s not fair for you either.”

Manic slumped in his seat. “I know.”

“You need to find these things out now.” Sonia said.

Manic ran his hand through his spines.

“Don’t freak out or overthink things.” Sonia said. “We don’t know how she feels about it.”

“That’s true.” Manic replied. “Maybe I can talk to her about it tomorrow if she doesn’t have to work.”
