In the Mobotropolis palace, the fifteen year old royal triplets (Sonic, Sonia, and Manic) walked to the royal study to meet with their father.

Sonic kept trying to run down the halls, only to be pulled back in line by Sonia.

Sonic groaned. “It’s not like anyone is in the halls with us, sis.”

“You’re still supposed to conduct yourself like a prince regardless.” Sonia replied. “Do you pay attention at all in your etiquette classes?”

Sonic rolled his eyes. “Sorry, Mom.”

Manic frowned. “I miss Ma scolding us.” He said. “It’s not the same without her and Unc.”

Sonia rubbed Manic’s shoulder.

Sonic sighed. “I wish they had found the cure to the Mobius Plague sooner.”

Sonia and Manic nodded.

The triplets finally made it to the study.

Their father, king Brenden, (a teal hedgehog with long spines) sat at his desk. He finally looked up from his work. “Ah, there you are.” He said. “Sit down.”

The triplets sat down on the couch.

“How long is this gonna be?” Sonic asked.

“Fairly long.” Brenden replied.

“Why do I have to be here?” Manic asked. “Sonic and Sonia are next in line.”

“About that.” Brenden said, setting aside the documents. “She’s not next in line.”

Sonia’s jaw dropped. “What?!”

“According to the laws and customs, the throne goes to a male heir.” Brenden said. “Unless all male heirs are deceased and/or abdicate the throne, of course.”

“But that’s not fair.” Sonia protested.

“Yeah, she’s better at this royal junk than we are.” Manic replied.

“I know, but it’s the rules.” Brenden said.

“Then we’ll abdicate the throne.” Sonic replied.

Manic nodded.

“It’s a lengthy process and, even if you do, it’ll still go to your sons unless they follow in your footsteps.” Brenden said.

Sonic and Manic slumped in their seats.

“Anyway, let’s go over the rest of the customs and your marriages.” Brenden said.

The siblings exchanged glances.

“We’re fifteen.” Sonic replied. “We can’t get married until we’re eighteen. Sonia and Manic aren’t even dating anyone.”

“You’re right, but you have had marriages arranged since you were babies.” Brenden said. “So you and Manic will be married as soon as you’re eighteen.”

“Why doesn’t Sonia get married at eighteen?” Sonic asked.

“Because it’s not as important for her as it is for you and Manic.” Brenden replied. “Look, boys, once one of you is in charge, you can try to change the laws. Until then, you have to follow through with it.”

Sonic and Manic sighed.

“Okay, Sonic, you are to marry Princess Sally.” Brenden said.

Sonic breathed a sigh of relief. “At least it’s someone I already love.” He said. “That at least makes this whole thing a little better.”

“Manic, you’re to marry Lady Rose.” Brenden said.

“Her?!” Manic shrieked. “I don’t like her.”

“I’m sorry, but you’ll have to learn to love her.” Brenden said. “The deal was made when you were two days old, no going back now.”

Manic buried his face in his hands, crying softly.

Brenden sighed. “Manic, we’ve been over this.” He said. “You have to toughen up. Start drying it up, so we can finish going over this.”

Manic eased his hands down.

Sonia handed Manic a tissue, her fingers punching holes in the delicate fabric.

Sonia seethed softly as she and her brothers walked to their rooms, she didn’t bother to stop Manic as he ran for his room.

“Sis?” Sonic asked.

“What?” Sonia asked.

“I really wish you could be queen instead.” Sonic said.

“Me too.” Sonia replied.

“I love Sal and we’d get married one day.” Sonic said. “But neither of us want to be royals. We just want to live a normal life, where everything we do isn’t documented or a big production. I want to live a life of adventure before I settle down, y’know?”

Sonia nodded. She thought of something and smirked. “Let’s talk about it in your room.”

Sonic furrowed his brow, but led Sonia into his room. He shut the door behind them. “So what’s there to talk about?”

“I can help you escape.” Sonia said. “You and Sally can elope and hide out somewhere. They won’t be able to track you two since you’re fast.”

Sonic rubbed the back of his head. “But what about Manic?”

“So take him if you can, I guess.” Sonia said, shrugging. “If not, I’ll help him leave. Won’t it be hard to lug him and Sally along?”

“I guess you’re right.” Sonic replied. “Alright, I’m leaving tonight. I’ll write a note and say goodbye. Just please help Manic.”

Sonia hugged Sonic. “I will. Goodbye, bro.”

“G’bye, sis.” Sonic said. “Oh, man, I’m gonna miss you all.”

Sonia smiled weakly. “I’ll miss you too.”

The next day, Sonia and Manic were summoned to their father’s study.

Manic looked around as they walked through the long hallway. “Where’s Sonic?”

“He left.” Sonia whispered.

“Without me?” Manic whispered back.

“Relax, I’ll figure out something.” Sonia whispered back.

The two walked into the study and sat down on the couch.

Brenden handed the note to Manic. “Your brother has run away.” He said. “We can’t find him. Argus has reported that Princess Sally has also run away.”

Manic sighed and handed the note to Sonia.

“I’m not surprised.” Brenden said. “Now, Manic, don’t be getting ideas. I’m making some changes to the security system and protocols.”

Manic nodded tersely. “Yes, Dad.”

Manic flopped down on his bed. “I could strangle him.” He muttered. “He left me here and this is worse for me than it would be for him.”

“Manic, calm down.” Sonia said. “I promise you I will get you out of this. It’ll just take some time. I have to study the new procedures to find ways around it, but I will get you out of here before you’re married off.”

“You promise?” Manic asked.

“I promise.” Sonia replied.

Manic hugged Sonia. “Thanks, sis.” He said. “You’re gonna be an awesome queen.”

“You’re welcome, Manic.” Sonia replied. “Thanks.”
