Shadow shuffled into the kitchen early that Saturday morning. He sighed as he saw Maria’s coffee mug sitting beside his mug that she had bought him for his birthday last year.
His wife, Rouge, made it into the kitchen.
“I’ll make your coffee, handsome.” Rouge said, rubbing Shadow’s shoulders.
“I can’t believe she’s gone.” Shadow replied.
“I know.” Rouge said, hugging Shadow. “Go relax, I’ll make your coffee and breakfast.”
“Thanks.” Shadow replied. He headed to the shower.
*
Shadow let the warm water massage his shoulders and wash away his coffee scented soap.
For the past few weeks, he would go into the shower to cry so Rouge wouldn’t see him.
He figured she probably knew why he was in the shower for so long, but didn’t admit it to her (not that she asked anyway).
He still couldn’t believe his adoptive sister Maria was gone. He knew it was coming,
Maria had been suffering from NIDS for eight years, but he never could’ve prepared for the pain it caused.
Rouge knocked on the door. “Breakfast is almost ready and I’d like to take a hot shower too.”
Shadow turned the shower off. “Thanks.” He said, stepping out of the shower. He dried himself off, combed his spines out, and left the room.
He walked into the kitchen as Rouge set a plate of pancakes on the table.
Rouge hugged Shadow as soon as he reached her. “I know, I miss her too.”
Shadow nodded.
Shadow and Rouge sat down at the table.
“So what’re we gonna do today?” Rouge asked.
“I thought about going for a ride, getting coffee.” Shadow replied.
“Ride to where?” Rouge asked.
“Doesn’t matter.” Shadow replied. He sipped his coffee.
Rouge laughed. “By that, you mean the backroads outside of town.”
“Is that fine with you?” Shadow asked.
“Of course, hon.” Rouge replied. “I’m just happy to spend the day with you.”

Shadow and Rouge got on Shadow’s motorcycle and rode off to the Mobotropolis coffee shop.
Rouge held onto Shadow, laying her head against his back.
Shadow smirked.
They made it to the coffee shop and parked out front.
Shadow got off the motorcycle and helped Rouge off. He kissed Rouge.
“Love you too, handsome.” Rouge said.
Shadow walked Rouge into the shop.
*
Shadow and Rouge finished their coffees and left the shop.
Rouge shook her head. “Ugh, Sleet and Dingo.” She said, motioning to the guys looking at Shadow’s motorcycle.
Shadow looked up from putting his wallet back into his coat pocket. He marched over to the guys.
Dingo looked up, then nudged Sleet. “Here comes the owner.”
Sleet turned to face Shadow and Rouge. “Nice motorcycle.”
Shadow nodded tersely. “Thanks, you got a good enough look at it, didn’t you?”
“How much do you want for it?” Sleet asked.
“Not for sale.” Shadow replied.
Shadow and Rouge climbed onto the motorcycle.
“Well, when you’re done with it, I’d like a first chance at it.” Sleet asked.
Shadow pulled his gun out of his coat pocket. “You’ll get it over my dead body.” He said. “Get lost.”
Sleet and Dingo backed away.
Shadow started the motorcycle as Rouge wrapped her arms around his waist. He sped off.

Shadow and Rouge arrived home late that evening.
Shadow parked the motorcycle in their garage, then turned the engine off.
Something hit Shadow in the back of his head as he was climbing off his motorcycle.
“Shadow!” Rouge screamed.
Shadow tried to pull his gun out, but was knocked out cold.

Shadow woke up. He slowly sat up, rubbing his head. “Rouge?”
Rouge didn’t answer.
Shadow noticed that Rouge was lying on the floor of their garage, in the spot where his motorcycle should be. He slid closer to Rouge, then checked her pulse.
No pulse. As far as he could tell, she had been gone for a while.
Shadow held Rouge as he cried softly as the muffled sound of sirens blared in the distance.
