Chapter 23: Harry arrives in the past

Harry Potter rolled to a stop. He found himself in a cave, dimly lit by torches. A tall naked woman let go of his arm. She appeared to have designs painted on her body. But they had been smeared since they were first applied. The next thing he saw were a group of men wearing furs sitting around the cave.

“Um . . . Hello?” said Harry. “Are you Ayla’s Clan?”

Suddenly one of them started silently casting at him with a wand.

“Espeliamus!” shouted Harry. He caught the wand as it flew at him. It seemed awful light for a wand, like it was hollow. Then he noticed the holes in it. It was a flute!

Then another of the men shouted something he didn’t understand and waving his hand, for he only had one. That is when he realized that the old man must be signing at him. As part of his signs there was a spoken word: “Ayla”

The woman suddenly sat at his feet.

Harry looked down at her and around at the men, who had expectant expressions on their faces. Harry looked down at her again, then at the men. The one armed man made some more signs and the woman made some with a few spoken words mixed in.

“Tap me on the shoulder,” whispered the woman, in English.

“What?” asked Harry.

“Tap me on the shoulder,” whispered the woman again, in English. “I can’t speak to you until you give me permission.”

“Oh!” exclaimed Harry, as he tapped her on the shoulder.

“Who are you? Where is Luna? What have you done with Luna?” Demanded the woman in English, after she stood up and faced him.

“I’m Harry Potter. I tried to stop Luna from going through that portal and got pulled here instead.”

The woman started signing and grunting at the old, one armed, man. Harry though he might have heard Luna’s name mentioned somewhere in there.

“Those no signs the Moon teach this woman,” signed Harry.

“You know the ancient signs but not the modern speech?” signed another man.

“Yes, the Moon teach me Iga signs,” signed back Harry.

The one armed old man grunted and made more signs at the naked woman, who took Harry by the hand and said in English:

“Come with me.”

Harry quickly drew his wand, shrunk Luna’s trunk and put it in his pocket before he followed her.

She led him out of the cave and past several circles of meditating men in side passages. The men were all wearing fur wraps, similar to the one that Luna had worn during the long campout. Finally, after what seemed like a long time, they exited the cave.

Outside that was a large fire that a large number of naked women were dancing around to a strange rhythm caused by several women beating on wooden bowls with a stick.

But the painted blonde woman that Harry guessed might be Ayla led him past them and to a specific group of lean-tos, crude tents made from hides on a stick frame. She led them to one of them and indicated for him to sit.

“You can sit here.”

“Are you Ayla?” asked Harry.

“Yes,” replied Ayala. “How did you know my name?”

“Luna told me a lot about you,” replied Harry.

“She told me about you too, Harry Potter,” replied Ayla in English, with her strange accent. “She made you sound more impressive than you turned out to be.”

“Sorry to be such a disapointment,” replied Harry. “Are you still mad at me? I didn’t mean to come here in her place.”

“No. You just wanted to prevent her from coming here in the first place,” snarled Ayla. “Do you understand that Creb was her mate? And after our first mates died, she became my mate. Now she never will be! And it’s your fault!”

“I understand what it’s like to Love Luna,” countered Harry. “Believe me, I do. In fact I loved her so much I wanted to stay be be my mate. I’m just as broken hearted at losing her as you are!”

Ayla closed her eyes and got control of herself. The way she spoke to Harry was not seemly for a woman of the Clan.

“May I go wash this paint off me?” asked Ayla.

“Go ahead,” replied Harry, suprised that she would ask permision for such a thing.

Ayla grabbed a fur and stomped off, leaving Harry to himself. In the distance he would see the mass of dancing naked women. Watching them held his interest. But he stayed where he was, as he didn’t want to intrude. The women were obviously enjoying themselves and he felt a male presence might make them feel less free to dance like this. Looking around, he noticed some of the other nearby lean-tos had sleeping children under them.

After a while, Ayla returned wearing only a fur wrap tied around her hips. She went to one of the lean-tos and picked up a baby that she carried to the lean-to he was under. She set it down near him and started building up the fire that was in front of the lean-to. Once she got the fire going well she put some rocks in it. She then poured water in a bowl.

“Are you making a potion?” asked Harry. “I always wondered how you could make potions without a cauldron.”

“No,” replied Ayla. “I am making a tea for us.”

“You’re not going to sleep tonight?” asked Harry.

“No. You can go to sleep if you want.” replied Ayla. “I am still waiting for the mog-urs to give their punishment.”

“Punishment?” asked Harry. “What did you do?”

“What did WE do,” explained Ayla. “It is death for a woman to see a men’s ceremony. If a woman see this, the clan will die. I saw the ceremony of all the mog-urs. I participated in it. I caused the death of all clans everywhere and brought a man of the Others to it. Last time, Creb was able to convince the mog-urs to let Luna and I live. This time, may be different.”

“And you are just going to sit here and wait for them?” asked Harry.

“What can I do?” asked Ayla. “They are the mog-urs of all the clans. I must abide by their decision, even if they curse us with death.”

“Well I’m not going to just sit here and let them curse me!” said Harry, as he pulled out his wand. “I’m going to fight!”

“You can not fight this,” explained Ayla. “If the mog-urs make a death curse, we will become spirits. None of the clans will be able to see us. They won’t acknowledge us in any way. We will be dead to them. My only choices will be to either leave with you, the man who took Luna from me, or go off and be alone.”

“So it’s exile, not actual death,” clarified Harry.

“For a member of the Clan, exile is death,” explained Ayla.

When the tea was ready, Ayla poured it into two cups. Remembering her clan manners, she took one cup and sat in front of Harry with her head bowed. It took a minute for Harry to remember before he tapped her on the shoulder.

“This woman made you some tea,” signed Ayla in the ancient signs.

“Thank you,” said Harry, as he took the offered cup.

Ayla moved back and grabbed her own cup, which she drank in silence, as she tried to ignore Harry.

As the sun began to rise, they spotted the hobbling gait of Creb’s approach.
