Chapter 24: an unexpected spirit

Creb was surprised to see Ayla pull not Luna, but a man of the Others from the time to come. The man was dressed in strange wraps and fell down as soon as he came through.

“Um . . . Hello?” said the man, in Luna’s speech. “Are you Ayla’s Clan?”

Creb and Ayla understood English, but none of the other mog-urs had ever heard it before. To them, he gibbering like all men of the Others do, instead of proper speech.

“What is this man of the Others doing here?” signed the second ranked mog-ur, waving his flute for emphasis. “It’s bad enough that a woman of the Others has defiled our sacred mog-urs’ ceremony, but to have a man of the Others see us . . .”

“Espeliamus!” shouted the man of the Others, causing the flute to fly out of his hand. The man of the Others caught it in mid air as it flew in his direction. Creb recognised that spell and theorised that Ayla couldn’t cast it silently because she was an Others, not because she was a woman as he had previously thought.

“Ayla, see if he knows Luna’s language,” signed the Mog-Ur. “Perhaps you can translate for us.”

Ayla obediently, sat at the feet of the man of the Others. But he didn’t seem to understand what was going on. He kept looking down at Ayla, then around at the mog-urs.

“He might not know he is suposed to give your permision to speak,” signed Creb to Ayla.

“Tap me on the shoulder,” whispered Ayla, in Luna’s speech.

“What?” asked the man of the Others.

“Tap me on the shoulder,” whispered Ayla again, in Luna’s speech. “I can’t speak to you until you give me permission.”

“Oh!” exclaimed the man of the Others, as he tapped her on the shoulder.

“Who are you? Where is Luna? What have you done with Luna?” demanded Ayla, in Luna’s speech, after she stood up and faced him.

“I’m Harry Potter. I tried to stop Luna from going through that portal and got pulled here instead.”

“The man of the Others is to blame for Luna not being here. The man of the Others stopped her from coming to us and took her place,” signed Ayla.

“Those no signs the Moon teach this woman,” signed Harry.

“You know the ancient signs but not the modern speech?” signed the mog-ur from Norj’s clan.

“Yes, the Moon teach me Iga signs,” signed back Harry.

“Take the man of the Others to our lean-to and wait,” signed the Mog-Ur. “The mog-urs need to discuss this and meditate upon it.”

Ayla took the man of the Others by the hand and said in Luna’s speech:

“Come with me.”

The man of the Others made a wand instantly appear in his hand, waved it at the strange lump that came with him, then picked it up and made it vanish. He then followed Ayla out of the cave.

Now that they were gone, Creb The Mog-Ur addressed his fellow mog-urs:

“Brother mog-urs, you all know that the 1st ranked Medicine Woman has committed an unforgivable offence by intruding on the ceremony of the mog-urs,” signed Creb, The Mog-ur. “You all know that if a woman sees the men’s ceremony that whole Clan will die! By seeing the mogurs’ ceremony, she has insured that all the Clans at this Clan gathering will die! But it is worse than that! I linked in to the Medicine Woman’s memories. I went back to the time when the Clan and the Others were one people. I then went forward through her memories. She was able to go far into the days to come, to a time when there is no Clan. A time when the Others have spread to all the world. Because of the Medicine Woman’s offense, all the Clans everywhere will die! But while there was no trace of the Clan in the world that will be, I saw another world, a world that might be, a world in which some trace of the Clan survives. I sensed that this spirit of the Others was the key to making that world. So I asked the Medicine Woman to bring her back. Unfortunately, Ursus had other plans for us and gave us not Luna, the spirit of the time to come. Instead, Ursus gave us another spirit, one I had not seen in this Mog-Ur’s vision. What this will mean to us, only Ursus knows. In order to save the Clans, we are going to have to acknowledge this spirit from time to come.”

“The Mog-ur is right,” signed the 2nd ranked mog-ur. “The 1st ranked Medicine Woman has Death cursed all the Clans everywhere! What does it matter if we acknowledge a spirit. We are all dead anyway!”

“I agree with the 2nd ranked mog-ur,” said the 3rd ranked mog-ur. “We are all in the spirit world. If, as the Mog-ur says, we are all dead and this spirit is the hope for the continuation of the Clan, we must acknowledge him. I say, since the Mog-ur’s Medicine Woman brought this doom upon us, he should be responsible for the Spirit of what may be. The Spirit should go home with his Clan.”

The other mog-urs nodded their agreement.

The mog-urs stayed up for the rest of the night discussing the issue of the man spirit from time to come. But in the end, the resposibility for him fell on Creb’s shoulders and on his Clan. Brun would not be happy about this. It was sunrise by the time Creb hobbled back to his lean-to, where Ayla awaited him.
