Chapter 28: Zab’s trap closes
Although it was considered rude to stare across the hearth boundaries and watch what people were doing in the next hearth. Everyone in the Clan was interested in what was going on in the hearth of the Others. Creb was no exception. As much as he could, he watched over Ayla and her new mate. He hoped the new man of the Others wouldn’t beat the daughter of his hearth. But unless he endangered her life, there was nothing that could be done about it. He watched as Harr repeatedly pulled an absurd amount of things from his magic box, only to load them back and pull an equal amount of something else out of it. He was also interested in any other strange magic Harr might display. He seemed to have a supply of wands, and Creb watched as Ayla tried them out.
Zab was pleased at Ayla’s reaction to her mating. He could see that the two Others did not like each other and neither was happy to be mated to the other. But then the Others Man starting pulling things out of nowhere and showing them to her. Zab could tell that the couple were starting to warm up to each other. Still, their whole isolation period lasted and the man had not once used Ayla to Relieve his Needs. Was there something wrong with the man of the Others? She was his to use how ever he wanted. Why hadn’t he? When the Mog-Ur told the Clan that the couple’s seclusion would end tomorrow, Zab hatched a plan . . . a way to cause Ayla pain and perhaps do the same for the Other’s man.
The next morning, after he finished the meal Breba had made him, he sauntered over to Harr’s hearth.
“May this man use your mate to relieve his needs?” asked Zab in the ancient signs.
“Huh?” said Harr, uncertain he had interpreted the signs correctly.
“You need to give me the Signal,” said Ayla, in English.
“What!?!” yelled Harr. “I would never do that to you! I know you don’t like me in that way.”
“It would be rude for you to refuse his request unless you have a valid reason,” explained Ayla. “Wanting to use me yourself to Relieve your Needs would be a good reason.”
“But you don’t want me, do you?” asked Harr.
“I want him less,” rebuffed Ayla. “If am to be used by a man now, I would rather it be you than him.”
Seeing the pleading look in her eyes, Harr turned to Zab and shook his head while saying the local Clan word for “No”. Then turn to Ayla and gave her the Signal.
Ayla turned to face away from him and got on her knees and elbows in the traditional Clan posture for him to use her.
Zab didn’t know what they were gibbering about in their Others’ sounds, but he could tell that they were both upset about his request. So it gave him some satisfaction to see Harr give her the Signal and for her to comply. But then he was not happy about the way Harr treated her. He’d hoped that Harr would just use her and be done with it. Or even better, if he would Force her to Relieve his Need.
Instead, he removed his strange wraps before he even touched her. He then caressed her, put his lips on her and licked her in all sorts of strange places. Zab became aware that he was being rude by standing here staring at them while Harr Relieved his Need. He’d been rude in the first place when he asked another man if he could use her, when he had a perfectly good mate at his hearth. Zab wandered back to her. Perhaps beating Breba would improve his mood.
Ayla found her new mate particularly skilled in the furs. He’d given her Needs and Relieved them, repeatedly. He’d even made her scream with pleasure when her Needs were Relieved. She hadn’t been Pleasured so well since Zar died. Where was Zar, anyway? He was one of the ones who had chosen not to live his life over again. And it had only been luck that she had even met him in her first life. Ayla hoped that he had found his way to another Clan that would accept him. Ayla wanted time to think about what just happened. She poked Harr’s shoulder so he would get off her.
“I need to go hunting now,” signed Ayla, in the local Clan language, while also speaking out loud in English.
“Right, right. I’ll just let you up,“ replied Harr, as he rolled off of her.
Ayla quickly got dressed, grabbed her sling and wands and started out of the cave. Before she left, she turned back to Uba and asked her to watch Durciza for her.
Ayla was confused as she stalked through the grass. She was still angry with Harr for preventing Luna from coming to her. And she really didn’t like Harr. Saving Iza had lessened her animosity towards him a little. And being in isolation with him had lessened it even more. But then . . . the way he made her feel when he Shared Pleasures with her. . . . . She thought her Needs were Relieved more than his. She spotted a small herd of Aurochs!
Carefully, Ayla stalked up on the herd until she was in range. Since Creb had taught her sling magic, her range was quite distant. She picked out a young bull that was almost large enough to challenge the leader. Taking a couple of stones from her wrap, she loaded one in her sling and spun it around.
CRACK! CRACK!
Her two stones broke the sound barrier as she released them. This was enough velocity to shoot through the aurochs and both of them hit and passed through the head.
The rest of the herd fled at the sound and death of one of their number. Ayla walked forward and cut the heart out of the aurochs, so she could bury it here, then she cut a piece off of the liver for her to eat warm. She didn’t want to eat the whole thing. It was much too big. She hadn’t noticed the very large pack of wolves until they had surounded her.
She reached for a couple more stones and her sling and found they had fallen out of her wrap!
The tension was broken by yelling, as Zeen charged forward. The wolves parted to let him pass and now he was at Ayla’s side. Zeen had been hunting too. But he was not as skilled at the sling as Ayla. But he did have his wand in hand, with this spear in the other hand.
“Flipeno!” Ayla knocked back a wolf with a jinx.
Zeen silently cast a spell at another wolf.
Over and over the two cast spells at the wolves as they defended each other and her kill. When the last wolf was dead or fled, they looked at each other, their chests heaving.
Ayla was surprised when Zeen gave her the Signal!
She’d seen him Relieve his Needs with his mate enough to know how he liked it. She untied her wrap and stepped forward so she could draw him into a kiss. She enjoyed the Pleasures that followed. She now had first-hand knowledge that the Mog-Ur’s Acolyte was very good at Relieving the Needs of women. She had suspected this was the case from how Vasa reacted to him.
“This woman is grateful that you helped her fight off the wolves,” signed Ayla. “If you carry the Aurochs, people will assume the kill was yours.”
Zeen nodded his agreement and signed: “This man will still carry it to your hearth. If we refrain from speaking, people will assume that this man is giving you his kill.”
“May this woman ask you a personal question?”
“Go ahead,” waved Zeen.
“Why didn’t you perform my 1st Rites for me?”
“You were so mannish, doing things like hunting and wand magic,” signed Zeen. “Also you didn’t show the same interest in the men that young women usually show. This man was uncertain that you were female enough to need 1st Rites. Then you got Broud to give you your 1st rites and this issue seemed settled. Do you feel the need for 1st Rites?”
“Not any more,” signed Ayla. “But at the time I wondered what was wrong with me that you didn’t want to give me 1st Rites.”
“Is that a new wand?” asked Zeen.
“Yes, my mate has a great many of them,” signed Ayla. “You should ask him if you can try them out.”
As they continued to walk, Ayla thought about what had just happened. As long as she went hunting alone, there was a danger she might run into some man alone who would give her the Signal. And if she didn’t comply, they might Force her, like Broud had in her first life. She’d enjoyed Sharing Pleasures with Zeen. But she could easily run into someone she didn’t want to Share with, like Zab.
When they got back to the cave, Zeen gave her the Aurochs and went hunting again. Ayla used her wand to skin and disembowel the animal. But the meat would taste better if it were dried on a real fire. The other women of the Clan helped her with that.
Later, after their evening meal, Ayla turned to her mate and told him in his own language:
“I really enjoyed Sharing Pleasures with you earlier. Any time you want to Relieve your Need in me, you are welcome too.”
“I would never want to force you into anything,” replied Harr. “You can say ‘No” if you want. Besides, I prefer to Share with women that Love me.”
“You are my mate,” replied Ayla. “By Clan tradition, you can have me anytime you like. I’m just telling you that I enjoy Sharing myself with you. I don’t Love you yet. I’m still mad that you took Luna from us. But I think I will grow to Love you.”
Harr pulled her into a kiss and a hug.
“Give me the Signal,” whispered Ayla in his ear.
Harr pulled back and looked at her strangely. “Are you sure?”
“I’m very sure,” replied Ayla, in a sultry voice. “Take me like a Clan woman and let everyone know I’m yours.”
