Chapter 29: Learning to Hunt.

The next morning, after their morning meal and feeding Durciza, Ayla told her mate.

“You might not have understood. But Brun has decided that you will not become a man and hunter until you can successful hunt in the traditional way,” signed Ayla. “This woman-who-hunts would like to take you out this morning so she can teach you how to track game.”

“All right,” said Harr. “I wouldn’t mind that.”

“In sign,” signed Ayla, scolding him for slipping. He also needed to l learn their Clan’s signs better.

“Agree,” signed Harr. “Personal to can negative past tense.”

To prepare for the morning expedition, Ayla tied a small wrap around her hips that fit her like a very short mini-skirt. She tied another around her body under her breasts and round her neck forming a pouch in which she could put Durciza, her wands and other things. Her sling was tucked into her waist, along with a bag of rocks suitable for throwing with her sling.

Harry put on a pair of jeans, a shirt and jumper and some socks and trainers. Over this, he wore a cloak to protect against the cold. Although it was a warm summer day for Ayla. For Harry, it was too chilly. His wand was in his arm holster, and his cloak of invisibility was folded up in his pocket, as usual.

They had only made it a short distance from the cave when Ayla scolded him:

“You are walking too loud!” signed Ayla. “You will scare the game away!”

“Well, how am I supposed to walk?” asked Harr.

“In sign,” Ayla signed to reminded him.

“Question to be to walk?” signed Harr.

“Part of the problem is your clothes,” signed Ayla. “They swish against you as you walk. You should take them off.”

Harry removed his trousers and folded them up.

“Wait a minute!” exclaimed Harr. “I remember Luna telling about how she would invite men hunting when she was really looking for an excuse to Share Pleasures! If that what’s happening here? Did you invite me out here just so I could give you the Signal?”

“I wouldn’t mind if you wanted to give me the Signal,” admitted Ayla. “But that’s not the main reason we are here. You really do need to learn to hunt.”

“You went hunting with Zeen yesterday,” accused Harr. “Did he give you the Signal?”

“I did not invite Zeen to go hunting,” countered Ayla. “I met him while I was already hunting. And yes, he did give me the Signal.”

“But we’re maried!” protested Harr. “Are you just going to submit to every man you gives you the Signal?”

“Yes I am,” snarled Ayla. “You don’t understand! If a man gives me the Signal, I must submit! I don’t have any choice. By Clan tradition I am required to submit. The only exception is if my mate is present and does not give the man permission. Yes, I wanted to Share Pleasures with Zeen, and I enjoyed it. But if a man I don’t want to Share with gives me the Signal, I must submit. In my previous life I ran into a man I didn’t like, who gave me the Signal. When I tried to resist, he Forced me to Relieve his Needs.”

“So whose else Needs have you Relieved?” asked Harr.

“Broud,” answered Ayla. “He was the only man I ever Relieved the Needs of before you.“

“So that means . . .” said Harry as he glanced at Durciza. “. . . Broud is her father, the one you made her with.”

“Yes,” replied Ayla. “Broud defeated my totem and made me pregnant with her.”

“How can you stand to live with such barbaric people?” said Harry. “Any man can have you whenever he wants here.”

“It’s not usually as bad as you make it sound,” replied Ayla. “But sometimes it is. And I am not sure how to change it. Last time, Luna and Iga changed it after Luna used magic to scare the men into submission. But this time, half the men are weez-urs. It will not be so easy to change.”

“I want it to change,” replied Harry. “I don’t like the idea of you being forced by someone you don’t want.”

“Well, if you want to make change, the best way is for you to become respected as a man and hunter and for that, you need to learn how to hunt. Now let me show you how to walk quietly. And later, when I go out gathering with the women, we can ask Broud to teach you how to use a Clan spear.”

The lesson continued through out the morning. They returned to the Cave for a mid-day meal, then Ayla dragged her mate to Broud’s hearth. As soon as they arrived, Ayla sat at Broud’s feet and waited to be acknowledged. After he tapped her on the shoulder, Ayla signed:

“This woman’s mate needs to learn how to hunt with a Clan spear,” signed Ayla. “This woman-who-hunts can teach him how to stalk and track game, but not how to hunt with a Clan Spear. She is forbidden to touch a spear. Can you teach this woman’s mate how to hunt with a Clan spear,”

“This man would agree to,” signed Broud.

After this, Harr had regular sessions with Broud and Ayla to learn how to hunt the Clan way. Ayla also persuaded him to save his future clothes for special occasions and got him wearing wraps, like a Clan man. Ayla taught him how to track and move quietly through the grass. Broud had him practicing running with a spear in hand and thrusting into a target.

When she wasn’t teaching her mate, Ayla spent her time preparing for winter, Hunting for their hearth, gathering both food and medicinal plants and making things they would need later.

Winter came and the Clan became mostly confined to their hearths. Harr pulled out all the wands and let the other weez-urs trying them one by one until they found a good match. The men were grateful for their new, better working, more powerful wands.

Harr also gave every member of the Clan one of the polar suits that Luna had bought to help them through winter.

But winter was mostly a time for Harr and Ayla to look through the books and study. With such a complete set, they could study subjects that they never had before. For Harr, it was Runes. For Ayla, it was the 6th and 7th year potions. Creb was interested in the information that was in those books. Reading the latin alphabet was too abstract for him. But if shown a spell with it’s incantation, he could figure out how to cast it silently. So Harr showed him many defensive spells and charms.

Sometimes if there was a lull in the snow and a clear sky, Harr would bring out the telescopes and show planets and nebulae to the Clan.

Winter Solstice came and Ayla and Harr shared the traditions they were familiar with for this time of year. After Harr explained Christmas and Yule to her, Ayla replied with:

“Well, after Iga joined us, we would have a Mother Festival on this night. Iga would mix up a special tea and we’d dance. Gradually people would drop out of this in couples to Share Pleasures with someone who was not their mate.”

“Yes. Luna past tense to tell this man of this,” signed Harr.

“We had another tradition where Luna would use a magic ring to call up the spirits of the dead to speak with us.” signed Ayla.

“Magic ring?” signed Harr. “Where Luna to have magic ring?”

“She brought it with her from her time,” signed Ayla.

Harr pulled out Luna’s trunk and started frantically looking through it. It couldn’t be! In a back corner, where he hadn’t looked before he pulled it out of the trunk to look at it. . . . the Ring of Resurrection! And next to it was Dumbledore’s wand, the Elder Wand! And since he had the Cloak of invisibility, that made him . . . the Master of Death!
