Chapter 30: Creb’s visitors.

It was lonely at Creb’s hearth.

He had not realized just how much joy Ayla brought to his hearth until she was mated and gone. Zoug was too old to go on hunts for large animals. So their supply of meat and hides came from the mog-ur’s share that Creb brought to the hearth. In spite of this, Zoug and Iza had become quite close. She treated him as if the two were mated. She even Relieved Zoug’s Needs when he occasionally had them. But now that Aba was gone, Creb no longer had a mate. Iza did perform most of the women’s tasks for him. And Ebra was willing to Relieve his Needs occasionally. But it was not the same as having a mate of his own. He really missed Luna.

At least Ayla was happy. She and her mate rarely had arguments anymore. And she had developed an interest in Relieving men’s Needs, mostly with her mate. Other than that one time with Broud, she hadn’t seemed interested in men that way before Harr came to them in Luna’s place. Before it became too cold, she had gone out hunting with Harr nearly every morning. And Harr was training hard with Broud to learn how to hunt with a spear.

One benefit of having this new weez-ur of the Others in their Clan was that he knew more about some types of magic than Luna had. So he could demonstrate them for Creb, who could them imitate them. And when winter came, Harr had more time to show him new magics.

Harr was standing at the edge of Creb’s hearth.

“To can this man, enter?” signed Harr.

“May this man enter,” corrected Creb. “And yes, you can.”

Harr stepped into Creb’s hearth and sat next to him.

“The Mog-Ur negative to like Harr large,” signed Harr.

“No, this man did not like you very much when we first met,” signed Creb. “You deprived us of my mate, Luna. But he has grown to like you because to the things you have done.”

“Question to have past tense do?” signed Harr.

“You brought all those gifts,” signed Creb. “And you saved my female sibling, Iza. And you have been a kind mate to the daughter of my hearth, Ayla.”

“Gift plural from the Moon,” signed Harr. “Harr to help hunt gift plural. Question to like wand?”

“Yes, this Weez-Ur likes his new wand very much,” signed Creb. “It is much easier to do magic with this wand. What new magics have you come to teach me?”

“Question to can, this:” signed Harr, as he silently cast a patronis charm. A stag made of light appeared from his wand.

Creb silently cast his own and a Cave bear made of light appeared, drawing everyone in the caves attention even more that the stag patronis had.

“To can speech with light spirit animal,” signed Harr before switching to English and telling the stag: “I am teaching Creb the messenger patronis.”

He thrust his wand at the stag and and it raced off to Ayla, where it spoke in Harr’s voice and delivered the message.

Creb tried the same, except he communicated with the Cave bear using signs: “Walk with Ursus.” And send it off to Ayla to do the same.

The Cave bear patronis ambled over to Ayla and signed its’ message. Before wandering around the cave.

At the same time, Harr’s stag was wandering from hearth to hearth so the children could pet it.

This was the beginning of another session where Harr taught Creb several spells.

At the end of the session, Harr pulled a familiar ring out of his wrap and put it on.

“Ayla told me you would recognize this,” said Harr, in English.

“It is the ring that Luna used to bring me back from the dead each year,” signed Creb.

“I could use it to bring your mate back so you could see her again and speak with her,” offered Harr.

“. . . . No . . . . Bringing back the dead is not a good thing,” signed Creb. “This man had a mate, and now she it gone. Being brought back from there is painful. Let the dead rest.”

“Personal to be,” signed Harr, in acknowledgment.

After he left to go to Broud’s hearth, Ayla went with him, spoke to Broud for a moment, then came over to his hearth to visit with Iza. Creb paid no attention the signs of Medicine Women talking healing. Instead, he closed his eye and meditated until he felt Ayla sit before him. Creb opened his eye and tapped her on the shoulder.

“This woman needs to speak to The Mog-Ur,” signed Ayla, letting him know that this was a serious conversation.

“What can The Mog-Ur help you with?” signed Creb.

“When we brought Iga into our Clan, she became our Clanluna,” signed Ayla. “Many years after you died, this woman was trained to be a clanluna. Without Luna, it is unknown if Iga will again be our Clanluna. This woman would like to resume her station as the clanluna of this Clan.”

“This is a serious matter,” signed Creb. “This Mog-Ur understands why you felt the need to consult with the Mog-Ur. Many of the men will object to a woman spiritual leader.”

“This clanluna does not propose to become the clanluna of our Clan all at once,” signed Ayla. “This woman would gradually become our clanluna, if you permit it.”

“How do you propose to do that?” signed Creb.

“There are many (9) boys in our Clan who are on the cusp of manhood,” signed Ayla, while saying the English word: nine. “This woman would become their redfoot, to teach them how to give women Needs and how to Relieve them.”

“Have you discussed this with your mate?” signed Creb.

“This woman has not,” signed Ayla. “There was no point in discussing it with her mate unless The Mog-Ur gives his approval.”

Creb thought about it for a time.

“Very well,” signed Creb. “If your mate approves, The Mog-Ur will give permission for you to be the Clan’s redfoot.”

Ayla leaped up and hugged him in gratitude.

“There is one other thing,” signed Ayla. “This Medicine Woman is uncertain if this is for the eye of The Mog-Ur, or Creb, the man of her hearth.”

“What is it?” signed Creb.

“Harr brought much knowledge from Luna’s time,” signed Ayla. “And this Weech has been studying much new healing knowledge. This Weech thinks that she might be able to use magic to fix your leg. And she thinks that Harr could replace your arm. As for your eye. . . . “

She pulled an object out of a fold in her wrap that resembled an eye.

“This is a magic eye,” signed Ayla. “It belonged to someone Harr knew who had lost his eye to a curse. After the man was killed, a bad person took it, and Harr took it back. He doesn’t remember giving it to Luna. But he found it in Luna’s magic trunk. With this, this Medicine Woman could replace your eye.”

“. . . . . . . This Mog-Ur will have to meditate on this,” signed Creb.

“This Medicine Woman understands,” signed Ayla, who gave him another hug before leaving.

After the daughter of his hearth left, Creb The Mog-Ur wondered what the will of Ursus was in this. It was the will of Ursus that he was born with the club foot and Ursus took his arm and eye away. Was this the will of Ursus too? Or would accepting this help be thwarting the will of Ursus? He decided he would need to ask Ursus, himself. So he called Zeen over to him.

“Yes, Mog-Ur?” signed Zeen.

“Tell the Medicine Woman to prepare the tea,” signed Creb. “We need to perform a ritual, just you and this Mog-Ur.”

“Yes, Mog-Ur,” signed Zeen.

Zeen ran off to tell Iza, who was not at their hearth, what they needed. They both returned to his hearth. But then, Iza went to Harr’s hearth where Ayla used magic to purify her. Ayla then helped her paint herself. When this was accomplished, Iza returned to his hearth, naked except for the paint she wore. She was carrying a bowl of the special tea that only mog-urs can drink.

Creb did not make the usual trade, because this time only the mog-urs would be performing this ceremony. Zeen and he each drank some of the tea, closed their eyes and meditated. . . .

Creb could see that Zeen’s Clan memories came from him, for Creb was the one who defeated Aba’s totem to make him. But looking at memories was not their purpose here. Creb dove into the abyss and pulled Zeen in with him. . . .

. . . . they fell for a timeless time until they ended up in a cave. There was no torch or fire, yet they could see, somewhat. A dark figure shambled out of the darkness and reared up on it’s hind legs. It was Ursus!

“What do the children of Mog seek?” signed Ursus in the silent ancient language.

“This Mog-Ur was been offered healing of his foot and the arm and eye that you took,” signed Creb. “Is this permitted by you or forbidden by you?”

“Accepting this help will diminish you in the eyes of some,” signed Ursus. “But healing from this will raise the status of your Medicine women and your Clan. You are free to do either one . . . choose wisely.”

And with that, they were propelled up, out of the abyss and into their bodies.
