Chapter 34: Ayla has another trial

Harr followed Broud a short distance from the Cave to where all the men of the Clan sat in a circle.

“You brought her mate,” signed Brun. “We have something to discuss.”

“What Is there to discuss?” signed Zab. “She used evil magic on my mate’s son. She should be Cursed with Death!”

“No one is being Cursed yet,” signed Brun. “Let us start from the beginning. Earlier today, the woman-who-hunts, Ayla, was seen using magic to carry the boy: Breb. He was seen unable to move and was floating through the air.”

“She humiliated him in front of the whole Clan!” signed Zab.

“Zab, do not interrupt this Leader again,” signed Brun. “Upon arriving at the cave, she released the boy, Breb and went into the cave, where she removed her wrap and flew out of the cave on one of Harr’s magic brooms.”

“What was she doing away from the cave alone with the boy?” asked Droov.

“She has been taking all the older boys out to train them in hunting,” signed Broud.

“She has also been teaching them how to give women Needs,” added Zeen.

“Why would she do that?” signed Crun. “Women don’t have Needs.”

“This man assures you that they do,” signed Broud.

“She is teaching all the boys who are soon to become men how to Relieve the Needs of women,” signed Creb The Mog-Ur.

“Could something had happened between those two that caused her to attack him?” signed Grod.

“This man will tell you what happened!” signed Zab. “He gave her the Signal. And when he did, she attacked him!”

“This man to speak with his mate,” signed Harr. “Ayla to speak that Breb to try Force Ayla to Relieve to be Needs. To be why to be to attack to be Breb.”

“Are you trying to say that Breb gave her the Signal and she refused? And that is why he tried to Relieve his Needs in her anyway?” signed Crug.

Harr nodded at this.

“He gave her the Signal!” signed Zab. “When a man gives the woman the Signal, she MUST comply!”

“Breb is not yet a man,” signed Creb. “Women are not required to submit to children.”

“What punishment do you all think should be given?” signed Brun.

“Perhaps her weez-ur stick should be taken away,” signed Grod. “After all, weez-urs can use them without mouth words. She has to make loud mouth sounds in order to use it.”

“In her hands, it is a weech stick,” signed Creb. “Weeches use the same magic as weez-urs. But some are better at some forms of magic than others. It is similar to how mog-urs and medicine women both use magic for different purposes. She should not be punished for defending herself against an unruly child. Rather Breb should be punished for attempting to Force her to Relieve his Need before he has become a man.”

“This was a woman disciplining a child,” signed Droog. “No one should be punished. Breb’s humiliation is punishment enough for him.”

“The woman, Ayla, should not be punished,” signed Zeen. “But the boy Breb should be forbidden his manhood hunt for an additional year. Also, perhaps we should consider only allowing men to Relieve their Need in women who want them to.”

“Women DO encourage me to give them the Signal when they want to have mutual Need Relieving,” observed Broud. “Allowing women to refuse men they don’t want might have merit. But this man thinks that in this case neither should be punished.”

“Ayla should not be punished,” signed Droov. “The boy should be punished with extra firewood gathering.”

“This man agrees with Droov,” signed Crug.

“That woman should be Cursed with Death!” signed Zab. “She struts around with her red feet tempting boys and then cursing them with foul magic. Curse her! And her Other’s mate too!”

“No punishment for either one,” signed Goov.

“The woman should be punished for refusing a Signal,” signed Crun. “Take away her weech stick and forbid her from practicing any magic except healing.”

“Isn’t she the one’s whose magic makes the smoke leave our cave and makes our hearths less smokey? Well . . . most of our hearths,” signed Cray. “No punishment for Ayla.”

“This man agrees with Cray,” signed Crac.

“This man also agrees,” signed Grok.

“The man agrees too,” signed Brab.

“As does this man,” signed Veen.

“Neither should be punished,” signed Brac.

“This man agrees with Cray,” signed Grir.

“This man also agrees,” signed Var.

“This man to think that no punishment for his mate,” signed Harr. “This man to think that all man no Signal woman not to be Need with man.”

“This Leader has decided,” signed Brun. “There will be no punishment for either one. This was a woman disciplining an unruly child. Zab should teach his mate’s son more self control.”

As they were leaving the meeting, Var pulled Harr aside. Var was the second lowest ranked man, having only become a man the year before and he was not entirely Clan as his mother was the mixed woman, Vara.

“This man saw you flying in the air with your mate,” signed Var. “Do you think you could teach this man how to fly?”

“This man to be happy to teach to be fly on broom,” signed Harr.

Harr took Var back to the cave and got the Nimbus 2000 broom and a cleansweep 40 broom from Luna’s trunk, then took them outside and taught Var the basics of flying. The Clan word for up was a sign. But Var was capable of pronouncing the English word: “up!”. Once the whole clan saw Var fly, many of the ones who were weez-urs wanted to learn too.

Harr was surprised by his first hunt where he was permitted to use magic. They had found a herd of reindeer. Most of the men were using slings and magic to throw stones at supersonic speed. This made them as deadly and long ranged as firearms! A few of the men, were attempting to hunt one the traditional Clan way: running it down armed with spears. On a hill over looking the hunt were the women who would do the butchering afterwards. Ayla and Creb were with with them, using their slings to pick off distant reindeer. Brun finally called a halt to the hunt when the number of reindeer brought down became too many to for the women to process.

Each of the participants in the hunt, including Ayla and Creb got to eat a piece of raw liver and after the hearts were buried, the animals were levitated by the weez-urs into one area for field dressing. Ayla and Harr were able to speed this up with flaying curses to skin the animals, disemboweling hexes to removed the offal and cutting curses to cut the meat into chunks that the women could more easily carry.

After this and future hunts, Harr’s display of magic on the hunt began to make his status rise from lowest ranked hunter. He didn’t yet know how to use a sling, but was able to bring down game with a variety of hexes and curses.

Ayla’s redfooting activities didn’t seem to diminish her Needs for Harr any. In fact, now that they had mutually declared their Love for each other, they were Sharing Pleasures even more than they had before. Once the boys had learned enough to Relieve her Need, Ayla’s Need for Harr was increased further. One day, she came back to the cave looking extremely pleased with herself.

“Why you so happy?” signed Harr.

“This redfoot just Shared with Zar completely!” signed Ayla.

Harr’s heart fell at the knowledge that she was now officially doing that with other people.

Seeing his downcast expression, Ayla stepped up to her mate, gave her a searing kiss, then whispered in his ear, in English:

“Take me back to your hearth and ravish me!”

Harr picked her up, months of building up the muscles for his manhood hunt allowed him to do this, and carried her into the cave.
