Chapter 35: Broud takes over
Summer turned into autumn. By early summer, the Clan had hunted plenty to tide them over the winter. So the emphasis for most of summer and autumn was to have the women gather the plant portion of their diet and train the boys to hunt. Ayla was redfooting most of the boys who would have manhood hunts next year and Harr had starting teaching magic to some of the weez-urs of the Clan. By the beginning of autumn, Ayla had declared all of the boys that she was still redfooting to be fully trained and she no longer Shared Pleasures with them.
Iza’s daughter was born in the autumn and she named her: Abba, after Creb’s dead mate.
Harr’s status had risen to just above Crug’s. When his magic was unleashed, he became a prodigious hunter and with his ability to silence men’s feet and hide their smell all of the hunters were more successful.
Dorv died over the winter and several babies were born. The most notable one was Vara’s 1/4 Clan baby with the most striking green eyes. It was obvious whose totem had defeated Vara’s.
“Something you want to tell your mate?” signed Ayla after the naming ceremony where Harr got his first good look at baby Bok.
“This man only Shared Pleasures with her the one time,” signed Harr. “Vara wouldn’t leave me alone! She kept following me around posing seductively in my sight! This man had discussed it with Zeen and he had no objection to this man Sharing with her. One day, when you were out redfooting, she surprised me with a kiss and this man gave in to temptation.”
“You did nothing wrong,” signed Ayla. “Zeen, Vara and this woman all gave you permission to use her to Relieve your Needs with her. Did you Relieve her’s too?”
“Yes. She especially liked this man’s parselmouth,” signed Harr.
“Then, this clanluna is content,” signed Ayla. “Besides, you were very tolerant of your mate being a redfoot to so many boys at once. And this woman was never dissatisfied with your pleasures during that time.”
“I Love you!” proclaimed Harr, in English.
“Really?” asked Ayla. “Show me how much!”
Throughout the winter, Harr and Ayla continued to study. Ayla’s knowledge of potions now surpassed Harr’s. She had more of a talent for it than him. And Harr was continuing his runes study, trying to catch up with his mate.
“Are you going to redfoot again next spring?” signed Harr.
“Yes. But this year there will only be one boy old enough for this woman to redfoot,” signed Ayla.
“What about all the boys you redfooted last year?” signed Harr. “After their manhood hunts, there will be a bunch of single men and Uba is the only one likely to mate any of them. Is it your duty as a clanluna to see that their Needs are Relieved?”
“Yes, it is,” signed Ayla. “But as their redfoot, this woman can not be used to Relieve their Needs until at least a year has passed. So this clanluna has spoken to the other women. Each will entice one of the new men to Relieve their Needs periodically so that the Clan will remain harmonious.
As for Uba, She will soon become a woman. Would you like to perform her 1st Rites?”
‘This man will have to refuse,” signed Harr. “This man knows that you consider people that age to be adults. But to this man’s eyes they look like children at that age.”
“This woman supposes Zeen will handle that duty, like he always does.”
When Spring came, the Clan was happy to escape the confines of the cave. Now the manhood hunts would begin. To everyone’s surprise, Creb wanted to have a manhood hunt. He had been training hard for the past year and Ayla’s potions had helped him build up the muscle he would need to run down and spear an animal. But Brun recognized that Creb still had limits on what kind of animal he could successfully bring down. And Brun wanted his brother’s first attempt to succeed. So he had Harry scout on this broom to find a herd of roe deer he could hunt. Creb hunt was indeed successful. Some had resented that Creb had been considered a man because of his sling magic. Now, no one could doubt him.
When it came time to take the boys on their manhood hunts. Brun insisted that the one he had designated, make the kill. Breb made the kill on Zar’s hunt. So Brun decreed that not only would Breb lose status for this deed, but he would also not get his manhood ceremony to become a hunter until after every other boy had succeeded.
Uba became a woman, and after 1st Rites, she was made a medicine woman and mated to Vun, the son of Uka.
Zar was mated to Vorga, daughter of Bona, the quiet girl that Ayla had overlooked.
That still left six men with no mates. They stayed at their mother’s mate’s hearths and the women of the Clan pitched in to see that their Needs were Relieved.
Food was scarce in the early spring, but after all the boys had become men, the Clan was easily able to build up a winter store for next winter.
Some more babies were born, most notably, Uba’s son, Vub.
Harr and Ayla studied a lot over the next winter and decided that it was time for Ayla to have another baby. They used a potion to assure that Ayla’s totem would be defeated by Harr and it succeeded.
Also over the winter, Brun and Creb decided that they would hand over their positions in the spring. It was time for them to retire.
So when spring came, the whole Clan gathered outside the mouth of the cave.
Creb performed the ceremony to make Broud the new Leader. Then, he performed the ceremony to hand the mog-ur’s position over to Zeen.
Once it was accomplished Broud addressed the Clan:
“Zeen and this man have discussed it, and now that this man is Leader, there are going to be a few changes around here.”
The whole Clan wondered about what their new leader was about to say.
“First of all, Crug will now be my Second Ranked Hunter,” signed Broud. “Zeen has decided to take Veen as his acolyte. At the Clan Gathering, Ayla was recognized as the 1st Ranked Medicine Woman of all the Clans. This Leader thinks this should be so in our Clan too. Iza will still be available to help the other medicine women. But this will allow her to spend more time on her daughter. And finally, this Leader has decided that from now on, women may refuse if a man she doesn’t want gives her the Signal.”
“NO! This is wrong! Can’t you see that this is all the doing of that weech?” signed Zab. “We should Curse her and her Others mate both! Curse them Zeen! Curse them now!”
Suddenly the ground shook with an earthquake! Crashing sounds could be heard from within the cave!
Suddenly, Ayla had a realization!
“Iga!”
She raced into the cave and quickly shed her wrap, before frantically rubbing herself down with the warming potion. While she was doing that, Harr arrived at his hearth.
“What are you doing?” signed Harr.
“This woman needs to go rescue Iga!” signed Ayla, as she splattered her mate with the potion that she was rubbing on herself. “Her legs are trapped under a rock and a hyena will eat her if this woman doesn’t get there in time!”
“Here, let this man help you,” signed Harr, as he poured some of the potion on his hand and helped her cover herself with it. “This man will go with you. Don’t forget your medicine bag.”
Harr tossed the bag in Luna’s trunk and helped Ayla attach her wand to her arm before handing her a Cleansweep broom. As soon as she had it in hand, she took off out of the cave. Harr took the time to change into winter clothes and shrink Luna’s trunk to put in his pocket before following her. He spotted her in the distance and his Nimbus broom was easily able to catch up.
