Chapter 38: a new cave

After Aga brought him his morning meal, Broud gathered Zeen, Veen and Creb so that the three of them could share their meal and he could have a conversation with them.

“This Leader had an interesting conversation with the new Other’s woman, Iga, yesterday,” signed Broud.

“Oh?” signed Zeen.

“Apparently, she has requested to be be assigned as a mate to you, Creb.”

“This man?” signed Creb. “But, isn’t this man too old for her?”

“She doesn’t think so,” signed Broud. “But she has another reason for wanting to be your mate. She is some kind of female mog-ur of of the Others called clanluna.”

“There is a people of the Others who use that term to refer to one-who-serves-the-Mother spirit of the others,” signed Creb.

“This man did not know that before speaking with her,” signed Broud.

‘It’s not in this mog-ur’s memories either,” signed Zeen, as Veen nodded.

“She says the Others have many kinds of people who deal with spirits,” signed Broud. “She wants to be recognized in our Clan as the clanluna, the expert at dealing with Relieving Needs. She promises she will not infringe on any of the things that the mog-ur and medicine woman already do. Just add new things.”

“That is interesting,” signed Zeen. “But not entirely accurate. Ayla has already been taking care of those duties, like she did last year when she painted her feet red and taught the boys about how to treat their mates. And she continued to do this when she arranged for the women to divide up and take care of the Needs of the new men who have no mates.”

“But those are not traditionally part of the Medicine Woman’s responsibility,” signed Veen. “If there were someone who was assigned that duty, it would leave Ayla free to perform more Medicine Woman duties.

“So what do you mog-urs, past, present and future think?” signed Broud. “Do we allow the female mog-ur to be a spiritual leader of of our Clan? Or do we forbid her from doing her Others spirit ways?”

“This mog-ur would not have a problem with a new kind of spiritual person in the Clan as long as she didn’t usurp any of the duties of the mog-ur or Medicine Woman,” signed Zeen.

“As the future mog-ur, this mog-ur would happy to have a female mog-ur that this man could speak freely to about mog-ur things and the fact that this man can give her the Signal afterwards is just a bonus,” signed Veen. “Though this man would want to try using her to Relieve his Needs before giving final approval to allowing our Clan to have an expert at Need Relieving.”

“This man may be impartial, because she has requested to be his mate,” signed Creb. “But think on when this former Mog-Ur took you back to the old memories when there were female mog-urs and women-who-hunt. That time was different, but was not unpleasant. This man thinks having a female mog-ur would be a good thing.”

“Thank you for your advice,” signed Broud. “This Leader will consider it. Please refrain from mentioning the possibility of a female mog-ur or clanluna to the rest of the Clan until this Leader has decided whether or not to allow one. Later, this Leader will need to discuss with all the men about whether or not we will even let her join our Clan. For she has also revealed to this Leader that she is a woman-who-hunts.”

When Broud discussed the possibility of allowing another woman-who-hunts of the Others to join their Clan, there was much less opposition than expected. The men who would have objected most strongly had left with Zab. Iga’s status as the Clanluna was not part of this discussion as it was being kept from most of the men, for now.

The Clan journeyed for several days until they reached what they hoped would be their new Cave.

When they spotted the cave, Broud asked Crug, Zeen and Harr to explore the cave with him. Crug started to light a torch before going in. But after Harr lit up the tip of his wand, the other three followed his example. A short time after entering the cave, Broud, Crug and Zeen came running out of the cave.

“The cave is unsuitable,” signed Broud. “Ursus lives there!”

Shortly after that, Harr came strolling out, the cave bear by his side.

“There is nothing to fear,” signed Harr. “This Weez-Ur has him under control.”

“How are you doing this?” signed Broud. “How are you controlling Ursus.”

“Imperius Curse,” signed Harr. “It allows this weez-ur to totally dominate the bear’s will.”

“You have not taught us that,” signed Zeen.

“It’s quite advanced,” signed Harr. “This weez-ur must not have gotten to it yet. What do you want this weez-ur to do with it? We could kill it, or send it to go find another cave?”

“A cave bear is a great gift from Ursus,” signed Zeen.

“Then you, mog-ur, will have the honor of killing it after Harr, releases it,” signed Broud. “Use sling magic.”

As Zeen prepared his sling, Harr moved away from the cave bear. At Zeen’s nod, Harr released his hold on the cave bear. It immediately charged at Harr!

CRACK!

The stone Zeen flung, accelerated to supersonic speed by magic, went through the heart of the cave bear, mortally wounding it, but not before it could get to Harr.

Pop!

Harr apparated 90 feet behind the cave bear, which fell, after failing to kill the one who had enslaved its’ will.

Now that the cave bear was dead, Broud cut out it’s heart and buried it. It’s liver would be too toxic to eat. The women then, began skinning and butchering the bear. Broud, Crug, Zeen and Harr again entered the cave with their lit wands.

It had a 3 foot high shelf of rock going around the wall with a side chamber that was another, smaller cave and more chambers deeper in the cave. The next chamber deeper. had the Cave Bear’s cub.

“Let us not kill this one,” signed Harr. “Ayla thinks that Zeen could train this one to let him ride upon it’s back when it has grown larger.”

“Ayla knew this cub was here?” signed Broud.

“Ayla found this cave,” signed Harr.

“If this honey-lover hurts anyone, it will be killed,” signed Broud.

“This weez-ur will help keep it under control,” signed Harr.

After the 3 men had exited the cave, Broud announced:

“This cave appears acceptable. We will have a hunt. If the hunt is successful, we will move into the cave.”

The herd of bison they hunted gave them half the meat they would need to make it through next winter. It took two days to process all the carcasses, even with with magical help. When the work was finally accomplished and the hearths set up, the Others woman, Iga, was adopted into the Clan by Vara. She was then mated to Creb. After that, Iza, the old medicine woman was mated to Cruga. This was followed by men’s and women’s ceremonies.

For the first time, Zeen would be leading the men’s ceremony. He proved to be close to as powerful a mog-ur as Creb the Mog-Ur had been. Without Creb’s presence, there was no doubt that it was Zeen who was leading them back through the memories. The trickiest part for Zeen was leading Harr back to his common ancestor with the Clan.

While this was going on, Ayla led the women in the women’s ceremony.

As part of setting up the hearths, Ayla had carved the runes in the fire circle stones of every hearth, so that the smoke would be channeled into ribbons and out of the cave without smoking it up. Harr charged all the runes and used the opportunity to teach the men how to do so.

When Ayla awoke the next morning, Harr had her morning tea waiting for her, this time with the usual pre-natal herbs that she was using to help the pregnancy along. He had started a morning meal and she let him nap while she finished preparing the meal.
