Chapter 37: The Clans part
“Where are they going?” signed Broud, as he watched Ayla and Harr fly away.
“It doesn’t matter,” signed Zab. “All that matters is that we are finally rid of those two! This man doesn’t want to be in Broud’s kind of Clan! This man wants to be in a traditional Clan! So this man is starting his own Clan! Now, who is with this man?”
The Clan splint into two equal factions with half standing by Broud and the other half standing by Zab. In particular, the men who didn’t have mates stood with Zab.
“Thank you for your confidence in me,” signed Zab. “Since we will be a traditional Clan, you won’t need your weez-ur sticks any more. Now, throw them in the fire!”
Instantly, most of the men on Zab’s side moved back to Broud.
“Droog? You are standing with Zab?” signed Brun.
“This man’s mate is your female sibling,” signed Droog. “Braca is Iza’s sister. She has the same lineage of memories as Iza. In another Clan she can be the Medicine Woman and not live in the shadow of Iza and Ayla.”
“This man would rather be in a more traditional Clan too,” signed Grod. “But not under Zab’s leadership.”
“Brother, your Clan has no mog-ur,” signed Zeen.
“Shut up!” waved Zab. “We don’t need no mog-ur anyway. And if we do, Goov can do it.”
“Goov has not been trained as a mog-ur,” signed Veen.
“Vun, please don’t take my daughter away,” signed Iza.
“This woman must go with him,” signed Uba. “He is my mate.”
“If you are insistant on this, here is how we will divide the stores, signed Broud. “Each Clan will get a share based on how many hearths your Clan has.”
Brun nodded at the new Leader’s wisdom.
The stores were low because it was spring and many of the people’s posessions had been damaged in the earthquake. There was also a limit to how much the women could carry. After it was all divided up, Broud made one last appeal:
“Won’t you reconsider this Zab?” signed Broud. “With us you could be a part of a stronger Clan.
“No! Your new ways will make you weaker!” signed Zab. “And at the next Clan Gathering, MY Clan will be the new 1st Ranked Clan!”
“Goodbye, son of my hearth,” signed Creb. “Walk with Ursus.”
And with that, the two Clans parted ways, as Zab led his Clan south.
“Where will we go?” signed Veen.
Bround didn’t know, but didn’t want to admit this to the whole Clan.
“The man knows where we can find a new cave,” signed Creb. “Ayla knows of it too. She found it. It is north of here.”
Then, we will head north,” signed Broud, as he started Leading the Clan north.
It was slow going leading the whole Clan, including children and heavily burdened women. When evening approached, Broud had them set up lean-tos and make a camp. But before he did so, he announced:
“Until we get to Creb’s new cave, the men are forbidden from asking the women to Relieve their Needs. Also the men and women will sleep in separate lean-tos.
The next morning, they continued northward.
But the Clan was transfixed by the sight of Harr, Ayla and another woman flying on two brooms from the north, with the new woman riding behind Ayla. They had seen Ayla fly before and was used to the idea that she took off her wrap to fly. But the other woman was naked, just like Ayla. After they landed, the Clan got a better look at the new woman. She was a woman of the Others. She had firey red hair and leaf-green eyes that were almost as striking as Harr’s. As soon as her feet were on the ground the new Others woman said some mouth words to Ayla, who indicated Broud. Then, the new Others woman walked over and sat at Broud’s feet. Courious about what this Others woman wanted, he tapped her shoulder.
“This woman humbly requests permision to join your Clan,” signed Iga.
“You speak the ancient Clan signs very well for an Others woman,” signed Broud. “Why are you not with your own people?”
“This woman’s people died when the earth shook,” signed Iga. “This woman would have died if the Medicine Woman and her mate had not saved her.”
“So you no longer have a mate to hunt for you?” signed Broud.
“No, Leader,” signed Iga. “But this woman hopes when we find the new cave that she will be asigned to Creb the Mog-Ur.”
“Creb is no longer the Mog-Ur,” signed Broud. “He has retired from being Mog-Ur.”
“So Goov is mog-ur now?” signed Iga. “It does not matter, this woman will still want to be the mate of Creb. And since this woman is a woman-who-hunts, she can provide the meat for Creb’s hearth.”
“Having a second woman-who-huts in the Clan will take some thought,” signed Broud.
“There is something else the Leader must consider,” signed Iga. “This woman is a Clanluna.”
“What means Clanluna?” signed Broud. “This Leader has not seen that sign before and has no memory of it.”
“The clanluna sign represents the word: clanluna,” signed Iga, pronouncing the word aloud the second time. “Amongst my people, the Clanlunae are the spiritual leaders. You might say this Clanluna is sort of like a female mog-ur. Except, amongst the Others, there are not separate mog-urs and medicine women. Instead there are the ones-who-serve the Great Mother spirit of the Others. These people may be male or female. There is a lot of variation in those-who-serve, with some being very much like mog-urs and others are more like medicine women. We receive a lot of training in a variety of things. So, this Clanluna could act as female mog-ur or medicine woman is no one more qualified were availible. But we each have our own speciality.”
“And what is your specialty?” signed Broud.
“The Relieving of Needs and mushrooms,” signed Iga. “If this Clanluna were accepted, she would not take anything away from the mog-ur or medicine woman. She would, instead be adding new things to benefit the Clan.”
“This Leader can see why you want to be mated to Creb,” signed Broud. “But how do you know the names: Creb and Goov?”
“This woman is Clanluna,” signed Iga, as if that explained it.
“This Leader will have to consult with the mog-ur and the other men,” signed Broud. “For now, you may travel with us. Before moving into the new cave, this
Leader will let you know his decision.”
Broud’s clan continued on for the rest of the day. When it came time to rest at the end of the day, Harr enlarged Luna’s trunk and pulled the seven wizarding tents from it. He quickly set them up in a circle around a central fire. The whole Clan was grateful for the tent, even the one’s who had to sleep on the floor because there were not enough beds.
When the women awoke to start the morning meal for themeselves and their mates, many of them were amazed by the wood-burning stove and how easiy I was to cook on it. The women served the men in the other tents first, before feeding themselves. At one point, Ayla pulled Iga aside:
“This woman was surprised that you didn’t Share Pleasures with me or any of the other women during the night,” signed Ayla.
“Broud forbid the men from Relieving their Needs until we are in the new cave,” signed Iga. “Women not Sharing Pleasures with each other was implied.”
“What means Sharing Pleasures?” signed Vara.
“Sharing Pleasures is when a woman Relieves the Needs of the man, and he Relieves her Needs at the same time.” signed Iga.
“Women care Relieve each other’s Needs?” asked Vara. “How does that work?”
“Oh yes, It can give women much Pleasure together,” signed Iga the Clanluna. “This woman will show you how, if Broud lets her remain with the Clan after we find the new cave.”
“Iga, why are you not speaking out loud?” signed Ayla.
“This Clanluna is well aware of the effect her voice has on people,” signed Iga. “For now, she is saving her voice for after we get to the new cave.”
