Chapter 45: Uba’s fate
When she awoke, Ayla and an older Clan woman were standing over her.
“Ayla?” asked Uba.
“Watch carefully,” signed Ayla. “If the men find out that you are seeing and talking to spirits, you might be death cursed. So to hide what has happened to you, you will have become a clanluna. Half the men think a clanluna is a female mog-ur anyway. Iga is speaking to Broud right now to let him know that she is going to start training you. So you need to stop speaking to the spirits when they appear to you and refrain from telling anyone but us and Iga about them. And refrain from telling anyone you are possessed by the Luna.”
“Ayla, your totem has been defeated,” signed Uba.
“Yes, this Medicine Woman knows. She’s starting to show,” signed Ayla.
“Who is that woman with you?” signed Uba.
“Uba, don’t you know me?” signed Iza. “This woman is Iza, your mother.”
“This woman apologizes that she does not remember you,” signed Uba. “No. Wait. This woman does . . . .This woman only met you once and you were dying at the time. Now this woman can remember that day perfectly! This woman can remember everything in her whole life! And in her previous life! Oh, this woman can remember being Forced by the Death Eaters .. . . every moment of it . . . . and this woman can remember being Selene and Eww! She remembers Sharing Pleasures with her father when she was her mother. And she can remember . . .”
“This is the kind of talk you should not do in front of others,” signed Ayla.
A group of people stepped forward, led by a familiar clan man. With him were Iga, as she looked when she was younger and a man that resembled Creb, except he was walking normally and had both arms and both eyes.
“Brun?” asked Uba.
“This Leader is not Brun,” signed the man. “This Leader is Broud.”
(Didn’t I kill Broud?) thought Uba. (He doesn’t look much like Broud. Zab looked more like Broud than he does.)
Uba rose to greet them, but her wrap fell down. It had become untied, as it often did when she was sleeping. She pulled it back up and retied it so she could greet the Leader.
“This woman greets the Leader,” signed Uba.
“Iga has requested that you become one of her acolytes,” signed Broud. “This man has discussed it with Zeen and as agreed to this. What happened to your mate in Zab’s Clan?”
“This woman left her mate behind when she left Zab’s Clan,” signed Uba.
“Then, you will need a new mate,” signed Broud.
“This woman requests Creb as her mate,” signed Uba.
“Creb?” called Broud.
From another hearth a man easily walked forward. He looked to Uba a lot like Creb, but he was much more muscular, a by product of training so that he was able to perform a hunt with a Clan spear in the traditional way. But he didn’t have Creb’s club foot. And he had a silver arm in the place were his missing arm had been. In the socket that used to be missing an eye, there was now a familiar magical eye. It looked just like the one that had belonged to Mad-Eye Moody before he died, an eye that Luna had put in her trunk.
“Creb?” asked Uba.
“Creb, the woman Uba wishes to have you for a mate,” signed Broud.
“This man can not have Uba for a mate,” signed Creb. ‘She is the daughter of this man’s hearth. To mate her would be as strange as mating Ayla. Besides, this man already has a mate. Many men in this Clan do not”
“If this woman can not have Creb, then she wants Harri for a mate,” signed Uba.
“Harr also has a mate,” signed Ayla.
“This woman could share a mate with you,” signed Uba.
“Let this Clanluna speak with her,” signed Iga.
Brun nodded and walked away with Zeen and Creb.
Iga pulled Uba aside in a place where her back would shield anyone, even Ayla from overseeing their conversation.
“You need to understand that the decision of who you mate is Broud’s and Broud’s alone,” signed Iga. “He will assign you to the mate he judges most wise. And it will be one of the men who have been a Hunter for more than a year and still have no mate.
Now, why do you want to mate Creb or Harr? What can you get from being mated to them that you can’t get from being in the same Clan as them?”
“This woman wants to Love them and Share Pleasures with them and take care of their hearths for them,” signed Uba.
“They already have mates who take care of their hearths and bring children to them,” signed Iga. “You can Love them without being their mate. And as for Sharing Pleasures, Creb will never agree to Share Pleasures with any of the daughter’s of his hearth. But you can still Share Pleasures with Harr without bing his mate. If you are to be a clanluna, you will be Sharing with everyone in the Clan. You are displaying selfishness in your desire to have already mated men. As a clanluna, you will have to learn to be selfless in the Sharing of yourself.”
“This woman understands,” signed Luna. “This woman will mate who Broud chooses. But this woman needs to make another request of Broud.”
“What are you going to ask for?“ signed Iga.
“This woman wants to be a woman-who-hunts,” signed Uba.
“Very well, this woman will go with you,” signed Iga. “Let’s bring Ayla too. All the women-who-hunt should have a voice in this.”
After gathering Ayla, the three women proceeded to Broud’s hearth. Uba stepped forward and sat before Broud with her head bowed. Broud tapped her on the shoulder, giving her permission to speak with her.
“This woman wishes to apologize for the presumption in attempting to pick her own mate,” signed Uba.
Broud nodded his acceptance of her apology.
“But this woman would humbly request that she be allowed to become a woman-who-hunts,” signed Uba.
“This Leader will think on your request,” signed Broud. “If this Leader can find a man who is willing to accept a mate who is both a clanluna and a woman-who-hunts, he may allow it.”
Iga took her back to Harr’s hearth. It was the Medicine woman’s hearth where patient’s were treated and was a bit larger, having room for Uba and her Children.
The next morning, when Uba awoke, Ayla already had the morning tea seeping. After Uba left the cave to void, Ayla offered her a cup. Uba took a sip.
Thinking that her sister would recognize the taste of the root that prevents babies, Ayla signed:
“This Medicine Woman thought that you might not want another child yet.”
Uba nodded her acceptance. After finishing her tea and feeding Viza, Uba helped Ayla prepare the morning meal. Soon, Harr and Vub wakened. As they were finishing the meal, Uba asked:
“Can this Weech have her wand?”
“That’s right, you did accidental magic and apparated here,” signed Harr. “That means your are a weech. Yes, you can have a wand. We have a variety to choose from. Just let this man get them our of Luna’s trunk.”
Harr opened the trunk and started to summon the wands when Uba signed”
“Allow this woman,” signed Uba, before trying to say out loud: “Aci .. . Aci . . Aci . . “
Realizing that she could not pronounce the words of the Summoning charm any more, she silently summoned her wand. The Elder Wand flew out of the trunk and into her hand.
“Careful with that,” signed Harr. “That’s the Elder Wand!”
“The wand chooses the weech,” signed Uba, before silently casting a Patronis charm. From the tip of her wand, a hare patronis leaped out and pranced around the cave before stopping at Harr’’s hearth.
“Luna?” asked Harr.
