Chapter 42 starts immediately after Harry goes back in time. It ended as a sort of Quantum Leap crossover with Luna now the the body of Uba.
Unlike on the show, where Sam replaced people but retained the abilities of his normal body, in this case, Luna is actually in Uba’s Body. She has retained her magic, but she also has Uba’s Clan memory ability. Except Luna’s Clan memories go back through Luna’s matriarchal line.

I hope this helps this make more sense.

Chapter 46: Uba’s mate

Uba stuck her wand behind her ear and stepped towards Harr. She pulled him into a hug and he hugged her back while whispering in her ear.

“I can’t believe you found me!”

But she was unable to answer him. Not only because her current anatomy was unable to speak English, but also because she was too emotional. At last, someone believed her about who she was! When he released her from the hug, she grabbed his face with both hands and pulled him into a kiss. This time, he responded to her and deepened it. She shifted to putting her arms around his neck. They ground against each other as Harr caressed her back.

“Eww!” said Vub, at the sight of his mother and that man of the Others licking each other’s tongues.

“Look!” Ayla made the Clan sound that was used to get someone to look at your signs before signing. “If you are going to Share Pleasures With this woman’s sister, this woman can take care of her children for you.”

Uba and Harr jumped apart from each other, blushing.

“No, that’s not necessary,” signed Harr. “Ayla, this is Luna! This man doesn’t know how, but it’s Luna in Uba’s body!”

“This woman has been saying that since she arrived,” signed Uba.

“If you are Luna’s spirit, where is Uba’s spirit?” signed Ayla. “Is she dead?”

“No, no, she’s not dead,” Uba signed. “She’s in a two-born-together of her body in the time that Harri came from.” (There was no sign for: duplicate)

“How do we get her back?” Ayla signed.

“We can’t get her back,” Uba signed. “This woman prevented that when she ran away from mating her male sibling, Zab.”

“Zab is not your male sibling,” Ayla signed. “You have different mothers.”

“A man named Targ defeated both our mother’s totems,” Uba signed. “That makes him this woman’s half male sibling.”

“Wasn’t Targ, Iza’s mate before this woman joined the Clan?” Ayla signed.

“Yes,” replied Uba.

“So, what happens now?” Harr signed. “Do we call you Luna or Uba?”

“This woman thinks it best she be called Uba,” Uba signed. “Iga had an unhealthy devotion to this woman in her first life. We should not reveal who this woman really is to the Clan and Iga in particular.”

Ayla nodded agreement with this.

“Well, this man supposes that all this is your’s,” Harr signed, indicating Luna’s trunk.

“No. Giving it to this woman would reveal who this woman is,” Uba signed. “Though this woman would like to use things from it. Keep it here, for now.”

“Well, this woman thinks we should get on with our day,” Ayla signed. “Would you like to help this weech tend the garden?”

“This weech would enjoy that,“ Uba signed.

Uba and Ayla spent some time tending Ayla’s magical garden. Uba was gratified to see the magical plants she had saved the seeds for growing so well. Then, they went out with a group of the women and gathered wild plants to supplement their diet. When they returned to the cave, Uba could see that some of the women were arranging a new hearth in the back of the cave. Then, Ayla took her to the sling practice area to test how well Uba remembered how to use a sling. Uba was able to hit the post most of the time. After that, they bathed in the stream.

When evening came, they went back to Harr’s hearth, when Ayla and Iga put on some of the dresses that were in Luna’s trunk. Uba tried to put one on too, but failed.

“This woman just won’t fit!” Uba signed. “This woman’s butt is too big, her breasts are too large, her shoulders are too wide and her arms and legs are too short!”

Uba huffed.

“You can have these,” Uba signed, indicating the clothes that Luna had bought for herself and packed in the trunk before Harr brought it into the past.

In the end, they dressed her in a new wrap, a fur that had not been used for anything before.

It was no surprise to Uba when Broud called everyone to meet outside the cave. Zeen performed the mating ceremony and mated Uba to Bar, the son of Vara. At the end of the ceremony, Uba sat at Bar’s feet. He tapped her on the shoulder and she followed him into the cave to their new hearth.

The smoke from the fire was not making a neat ribbon out of the cave. Ayla had been with her all day and had not had a chance to carve runes on the stones around the fire or charge them. Perhaps Uba would do it and use Pleasures to charge them, like Mariza did in her past life.

Uba prepared her new mate, who was a stranger to her, some tea and then, an evening meal. After the meal, she started to hear the drumming of the women”s ceremony outside the cave. Bar turned to her and gave her the Signal.

Resigned to this. She got in position on her forearms and knees so he could take her like a good Clan woman. To her surprise, he gently caressed her back and butt for a while, before untying her wrap and setting it aside. Then he moved up towards her head and put his finger under her chin. A slight upward pressure persuaded her to rise up until she was facing her on her knees. Bar grabbed her face and pulled her into a kiss. He licked her lips a few times, but didn’t try to penetrate her with his tongue until she allowed it. The Pleasures that followed left her satiated. Perhaps being mated to him wouldn’t be so bad? Broud told her he would pick a man that wouldn’t mind her being a clanluna and a woman-who-hunts. And he had a wand of his own and hadn’t objected to her use of her wand in preparing the meal. She went to sleep that night content in Bar’s arms. But she still had dreams that she was mated to a Creb/Harry/Hermione/Ayla hybrid that shifted from one of them to another.

In the morning, Uba woke to find Bar had awoken before her and had built up the fire and started stones heating. After using the night basket, Uba started using the stones to heat water for tea. While waiting for the herbs to heat, Ayla brought Viza to her and passed her over the hearth boundary without a word. Ayla would be taking care of Uba’s son, Vub, while she was in her mating seclusion. Uba gave her a grateful look and fed her baby, while waiting for the tea to brew. Uba had made certain to include the totem-strengthening root in her tea, as she didn’t want another child so soon. Once the tea was done, she offered a cup to Bar and drank her own as they sat in companionable silence. Finally, Uba brought us a subject that worried her. Broud had given his assurances. But she wanted to see it from her new mate’s hands.

“Now that we are mated, are you going to let this woman be a woman-who-hunts?” Uba signed.

“This man thinks it is strange that his mate has an urge to hunt,” Bar signed. “How will you hunt without the memories for hunting?”

“This woman has recently remembered a life when she was a woman-who-hunts,” Uba signed. (Referring to her life as Luna)

“Is this related to the sickness that made the Medicine Woman to want you to be a clanluna?” Bar signed.

“The recent change in this woman has changed this woman greatly,” Uba signed. “Will you let this woman hunt?”

“If the spirits have guided this man’s mate to hunt, then this man’s mate will be a woman-who-hunts,” Bar signed.

“And what about this woman being a clanluna,” Uba signed. “Will this woman's’ mate allow the other men of the Clan to Share Pleasures with her?”

“You are already speaking like a clanluna, calling it Sharing Pleasures and not Relieving Needs,” signed Bar. “If this man’s mate wants to Relieve the Needs of the other men of the Clan, this man has no objection.”

“This woman is also a weech,” Uba signed. “This weech noticed that her mate is a weez-ur. Will you object to this weech doing wand magic?”

“How will you do wand magic,” signed Bar. “This weez-ur has noticed that the weech, Ayla, must use mouth sounds in order to use her wand.”

“This weech knows how to use her wand silently, like you do,” Uba signed. “This weech is also good at some forms of magic that Harri and Ayla are not.”

“What kind of magic?” Bar signed.

“For example, this weech has noticed that the runes around our fire have not been placed,” Uba signed. “And this weech noticed that the rune carving tools have been left at our hearth. This weech is better at carving the runes than Ayla.”

“Ayla and Harr can already do that,” Bar signed. “This weez-ur has seen her carve the runes and Harr use his wand to charge them.”

“This weech knows another way to charge the runes,” Uba signed. “Instead of using a wand, we could charge them with . . . Pleasures. . . .”

And for the next few days, Uba carved the runes on the stones that contained the fire, and Bar helped her use Pleasures to charge them. By the time their seclusion had ended, Their fire smoke now formed a neat ribbon that went up to the ceiling, then out of the cave like all the other fires in the cave.
