Chapter 47: a new woman-who-hunts

After her their mating seclusion ended, Uba was called to the sling practice area by Broud, where Zoug, Ayla and Iga were waiting for them.

“Ayla has told this Leader that you are proficient with a sling,” signed Broud. “You will now demonstrate your skill.”

Ayla handed her a sling and a stone. Uba stopped to concentrate for a moment, wound up and then released, hitting the post.

“Again,” signed Broud.

Uba slung another stone that also hit the post.

“Again,” signed Broud.

This one just barely missed the post.

“This man doesn’t always hit the post either,” signed Zoug. “She hits often enough to take down a small bird.”

“You appear to be proficient with a sling,” signed Broud. “After you have been made a woman-who-hunts, you will be allowed to hunt with a sling. If you wish to learn sling magic, Creb can teach that to you if you are able to learn it. You may also learn to use Iga’s small spears.”

Iga handed here a small spear with a flint spearpoint attached to it.

“This spear seems small,” signed Uba. “Why does it have feathers?”

“You throw it,” signed Iga, before demonstrating by throwing another one at the post, where it stuck.

Uba tried it too. But her’s missed.

“It will take practice before you can use this on a hunt,” signed Iga.

“This woman would like to use even smaller spears and use a bow to throw them,’ signed Uba.

“How can a bow throw a spear?” Broud signed. He was only familiar with bows being used to start a fire, not for shooting arrows.

“This woman is familiar with the idea,” signed Ayla. “It will work.”

“May this woman have permission to make a bow and use it for hunting?” Uba signed.

“The Leader will allow you to make this bow and little spears so that you can demonstrate it,” signed Broud.

“This woman is grateful,” signed Uba. “May this woman practice with Iga and her little spears now.”

“This woman will help you learn to throw the little spears,” signed Iga.

Uba spent many (4) fingers of time throwing spears while Ayla and Iga gave her tips. After that much time, Ayla made her quit, so that she wouldn’t strain a muscle.

After spear practice was over, and the men had left, Iga changed to another subject:

“There are many (9) men who have no mates, one boy who need a clanluna,” signed Iga. “With Vara and you, we have many (4) clanlunae. This Clanluna will be Brok’s redfoot and see to the Needs of Brag and Grug. That leaves many (5) more that Ayla and this Clanluna can not Relieve because we were their redfeet. This Clanluna would like you, Uba to see that the Needs of Bruk. You must Share Pleasures with him in a way that will Relieve both his Needs and yours. You should take care to make certain that he treats you with respect. His future mate will be glad that you helped him learn to treat women in this way. This Clanluna will watch you the first time. If you are proficient enough, this Clanluna may increase the number of men you are Relieving, so that the burden on Vara will be less.”

“This woman understands,” signed Uba.

In her past life, Luna had already been trained as a clanluna by Iga. So when Iga saw her performance with Bruk, she deemed that Uba didn’t need any training.

That night, the ceremony was performed to make Uba a woman-who-hunts. For now, she only had the sling to hunt with and Zoug had made her one of her own to use. But she promised her self she would start making a bow and arrows tomorrow.

The next day, Uba found a likely looking sapling. If you carved it right, you could get four bows from a single tree. When she found a likely looking yew tree, Uba felled it and split it twice. She’d make a bow each for herself, Ayla and Iga.

It took several days to carve a bow. Even longer when she was practicing learning to throw a spear, be a clanluna, gather her share of the plants and go on the occasional hunt.

It was on a hunt with Bruk that she killed her first prey, a squirrel. It wasn’t much. But it was a start and officially sealed her status as a woman-who-hunts. She got so excited about it that Brok gave her the Signal. Uba didn’t mind. Going hunting was just a pretext to get him alone so he could Share Pleasures with him. Actually making a kill was a bonus.

When her bow and arrows were done, Uba demonstrated them for Broud, Ayla and Iga. Broud deemed her sufficiently skilled with them and gave her permission to use bows for hunting. She also had permission to go on a hunt with the men.

When they went on the hunt, Creb and Ayla stayed to guard the women nearby. Harr had flown on his broom and located this heard of bison. Once he reported it to Broud and they were in position, Brag, Bar, Dror, Eb, Grev, Broud and Brun, all armed with large Clan Spears, along with Iga, armed with her throwing spears and Uba with her bow began to encircle the herd, attempting to cut off an old slow cow. Brun charged first. Iga charged next, but didn’t throw a spear yet. When the cow turned towards her, Grev charged at it. The men took turns charging at it until, at Broud’s signal, Brag charged forward and thrust his spear into the bison’s heart, killing it.

While this was going on Creb and Ayla used sling magic to bring down a couple of more bison. Broud called a halt to the hunt and the women began butchering. While this was going on, the men, and occasionally Ayla, Iga, and Uba would kill any predators or scavengers that got to close. Which meant several fine furs were obtained.

That night there was a hunt dance for Brag, who had already become a Hunter and man two years before. This was followed by men’s and women’s ceremonies.

As Uba danced with the other women, she lost herself in the pure, primal joy of the dance. The next morning, when she woke, she had to find her wrap before returning to her hearth, where her mate was already waiting for her. After making them tea and starting the morning meal cooking. Uba sat and fed Viza, as she sipped her tea and conversed with Bar and Vub.

“Did you enjoy the hunt?” signed Bar.

“This woman-who-hunts enjoyed being able to hunt with her mate very much,” signed Uba.

“You are not disappointed that you failed to make a kill?” Bar signed.

“This woman-who-hunts was thrilled to be a part of running down the bison,” signed Uba. “This woman wishes that she had been allowed to use a Clan spear and make the kill.”

“Sometimes you are so funny!” Bar signed. “You should ask Broud if you can.”

“This woman-who-hunts will . . . but no until this woman-who-hunts has brought down a large animal with her bow,” signed Uba.

Uba was already making plans to make a longbow. Now that she had Clan strength, she could pull a heavier drawn bow. But first, there was another hunting skill she need to master. And before she did that, she need to make a kill with her bow.

The next day, she did just that, shooting down a goose with her bow. So it was a day later before she approached Creb and sat at his feet. He tapped her on the shoulder, giving her permission to speak.

“Can you teach this weech how to do sling magic?” Uba signed.

“This weez-ur will teach you,” signed Creb, before walking towards the sling practice range.

Once there, he waved for her to pull out her sling and he addressed her:

“The magic is similar to using a wand, except you are channelling the magic down your arm and through the sling,” signed Creb before demonstrating by touching her shoulder and running his hand down her arm to her hand. He then stepped behind her and repeated the magic from behind her running his hand down her arm from her shoulder. She could feel his breath on the back of her neck and shivered with Need for him.

Creb wondered if she was cold.

Uba got herself back under control spun her sling and channel magic through her arm so that it felt just like when Creb had channel magic down her arm. She hit the post! Creb stepped around her and into her view.

“That was very good!” Creb signed. “Now, try again.”

Creb stepped out of the way and she spun and released another stone, while channeling the magic down her arm. It hit the post.

“Again,” signed Creb.

She hit it again.

“Now, if you want to hit two birds with one stone, the magic should feel a little like the floating things magic, (levitation charm)” signed Creb. “Show this weez-ur you know the arm movements for that magic.”

Uba deliberately flubbed the movement.

“No. You need to move your arm like this,” signed Creb before getting behind her with his chest pressed against her back and his breath in her ear as he guided her arm through the movement. He then, stepped away where she could see him and signed:

“Now you try,” signed Creb.

Pulling her wand from behind her ear, she silently cast a perfect levitation charm that made a stone rise up in the air. After she canceled the spell, sho tucked her wand, back behind her ear.

“Now put that same feeling into your cast with the sling,” signed Creb.

Uba spun the sling and released, while channeling as if she were casting a levitation charm. The stone hit the post, bounced off and hit the next post.

“Very good,” signed Creb. “Practice that and you will be able to hit many targets with one stone.”

“What about the fast throw?” Uba signed.

“To throw very fast, the magic need to feel sort of like a knock back magic, (jinx),” signed Creb.

“Can you show this weech the movement like you did before?” Uba signed.

Creb moved behind her but when his chest touched her back, she feigned stumbling so he wrapped his silver arm around her waist to steady her. As he grabbed her, his forearm just barely grazed the bottom side of her breasts. His other arm grabbed her hand. Again, Uba was thrilled to feel his breath in her ear and he moved her arm through the movements. She would have liked to have been held by him for longer. But, instead, he released her and expected her to demonstrate. Not wanting to disappoint him, she closed her eyes so she could get herself back under control. When she opened them, She drew her wand and cast a silent knock-back jinx that sent a stick flying away. Tucking her wand back behind her ear, she tried it with her sling. So she bend over at the waist in front of Creb to pick up a stone, loaded her sling and slung it while channeling the magic.

CRACK!

The stone broke the sound barrier but did not hit the post.

“You will have to practice more to hit the post,” signed Creb. “But you have learned the lesson.”

“Is there anything else you could teach this woman,” Uba signed, as she tilted on one hip and twirled her hair in the fingers of one hand, while her gaze went down, demurely.

“Stop encouraging this man to give you the Signal!” Creb signed.

Just then, the door opened and Hermione stepped out. Creb’s gaze was instantly drawn to her.

“Is this a good time?” Hermione asked. “I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”

“Uba! Get back! A spirit has appeared to this Mog-Ur!” Creb signed.

“You can see her?” Uba signed.

“It appears he can see me,” replied Hermione. “It must be because he’s got Mad Eye Moody’s Eye?” Hermione then switched to the silent ancient Clan signs that Luna had taught her.

“This woman greets you,” signed Hermione. “This woman is called Hermi.”

“Get back spirit! This Mog-Ur will not let you harm the daughter of his hearth!” signed Creb.

“This woman is NOT a spirit,” signed Hermione. “This woman is not here. She is sending you her signs from the distant time to come. This woman is a friend to Harry and Luna and would like to be a friend to you. Are you Creb?”

“If you are in the time to come with Luna, can this Mog-Ur speak with her?” Creb signed.

“You CAN speak with her,” signed Hermione, as she indicated Uba. “She is standing right next to you. That is Luna in Uba’s body.”

“That is what this woman has tried to tell you,” signed Uba. “This woman is Luna!”

Creb looked at her for a moment, before she saw hope blossom in his eyes. He pulled her into a hug. He held her like that for a while before releasing her. As soon as he did, pulled him into a kiss. He started to respond before he pushed her away.

“No! This is wrong. Uba is the daughter of this man’s hearth! This man can not Share Pleasures with Uba’s body, even if it has the spirit of Luna in it!” signed Creb. “If Luna’s spirit is in her, where is Uba’s spirit?”

To answer him Hermione switched to English. There were just too many concepts involved that she didn’t know the signs for.

“Uba is in my time in a duplicate body,” explained Hermione. “She still looks like herself, but apparently the transition changed her.”

“Changed her in what way?” Uba signed.

“Well for one thing, she’s become a Witch,” explained Hermione. “The trip gave her magic. Also, her brain has been re-wired. She can learn anything she puts her mind to and can even speak English now. She’s lost her Clan memories, but still has an eidetic memory. She’s learning reading, math and science at an astounding rate. If she gets caught up enough, I plan to send her to Hogwarts next fall.”

“So you see, Creb,” signed Uba, as she rubbed herself against his body. “You and this woman CAN get together and Share Pleasures.”

“Not as long as you look like that, we can’t,” signed Creb.

“Please refrain from telling Iga about this woman being Luna,” signed Uba.
