Chapter 52: “It’s time!”

The clanlunae ceremony proved to be a regular monthly occurrence during the warmer months.

Uba continued using her Clan spear on hunts, when the purposed was to keep up the men’s skill. When Bround wanted to obtain an much meat as the women could butcher, Uba used her longbow.

One day, Ayla counted up her counting sticks and came to a realization. Before she could tell anyone, Uba walked up to Harr’s hearth.

“It’s time,” signed Uba.

“This woman just finished counting the days,” signed Ayla.

“We should tell Harr,” signed Uba.

“Do you know where he is?” signed Ayla.

“He went hunting with . . . Iga and Creb,” signed Uba.

“We should go find them,” signed Ayla.

The two left the cave and headed out towards the forrest. But before they got there, they came upon Creb leading Harr, who was levitating a wooly rhino carcas. Iga trailed behind them.

“Oh! You were actually hunting,” signed Ayla. “This woman thought . . .”

“We were, earlier,” signed Iga, before switching to speaking out loud. “Did you come out to join us? You are welcome to.”

“No. We came for Harr because in is time to go save Mio,” signed Ayla.

“You counted the sticks?” signed Creb, amazed at the daughter of his hearth’s skill at counting.

“Who’s Mio?” Harr signed.

“Jetamio, is the mate of Thonolan,” explained Ayla, switching to English, before going back to sign. “Thonlan was mated to Luna after Creb died and later this woman became his co-mate with Luna. But Jetamio was his mate before he met us. She died in childbirth a few days from now.”

“When we were dead and decided to live our lives over again, Thonlan chose not to come back,” signed Uba. “But Mio wanted a chance to live her life again with her daughter.”

“So, we need to go find her and save her,” signed Ayla.

“The problem is, we don’t know exactly where Mio’s people live,” signed Uba. “We know it is somewhere along the Great Mother river. But we don’t know exactly where.”

“Right,” said Harr, switching back to his native English. Luna was always better than us in divination. So we’ll need Uba to come along and help find her. And Ayla will need to be there to Heal her once we find her.”

“This woman is a medicine woman too,” signed Uba. “This medicine woman has unlocked the memories of Iza’s line.”

“This man apologizes,” signed Harr. “This man forgot that you have gained more skills. So it’s settled, Ayla, Uba and this Weez-Ur will go. We should fly on brooms to make it faster.”

“Before you go, can you carry this carcass to the cave so that we women can carve it up?” Iga signed.

“This weez-ur can carry the rhino,” signed Creb, as he drew his wand and took over levitating the carcass.

Harr took Ayla and Uba back to the cave via apparition.

Pop!

They appeared in Harr’s hearth and Uba immediately rushed off to ask Vara to take care of her’s and Ayla’s children while they were gone. Then, she ran back to Harr’s hearth ripping the laces on one side of her dress so she could remove it as she ran. When she arrived, Ayla had already thrown off her wrap. Harr had waved his wand and packed all of Ayla’s healing herbs and potions and supplies in Luna’s trunk and was now rubbing the warming potion on Ayla. He stopped for a second and summoned Uba’s dress into the trunk before resuming his application of the warming potion on every inch of Ayla’s skin. Uba joined him and after Ayla was covered, she and Harr did the same for Uba.

Harr changed into his clothes he had worn when he arrived in this time, with a parka over it. He then summoned three brooms from the trunk, shrunk it and put it in his pocket. They each took a broom and followed Uba out of the cave.

“What’s next?” asked Harr. “You’re the expert on divination.”

Uba pulled her wand from behind her ear, placed it in he palm and concentrated. The wand moved on its’ own until it pointed East North East.

“That way,” waved Uba, wandlessly applying an sticking charm so her wand would stick to her broom and point the way.

The three of them mounted their brooms, Harr on the Nimbus, Ayla and Uba on the slower, but easier to ride Cleansweeps. They flew up into the air and started in the direction that Uba indicated.

They flew the rest of the day. But as the sun approached setting, they were forced to land and make camp. Harr enlarged the trunk, from which he pulled a tent and set it up. Uba summoned firewood and cut it up. Then set wards around the tent. When she entered, Ayla had already built a fire in the wood stove. But she quickly realized they had forgotten to pack food. All she had for their stomachs was teas. So she prepared that for them.

“This woman apologizes that she forgot to pack food,” signed Ayla.

“We ALL forgot food and got here too late to hunt,” signed Harr. “It won’t hurt us to go without food for a couple of days.”

“Well, there is one thing we could do to distract our selves from our empty bellies,” signed Uba, as she raised one hip and gave Ayla a sultry look.

“This weech DID remember to pack the shape changing (polyjuice) potion,” signed Ayla.

“Let’s use it to become each other,” suggested Uba.

“What do you mean?” Ayla signed.

“Harr could use a Luna hair to become her,” signed Uba. “And you and this Weech can both become Harr.”

“If Harr is willing, this weech is, but this weech would rather remain herself for this,” signed Ayla.

The next morning, they quickly packed up and remounted. Uba pointed the way and they flew.

It was later afternoon when they approached a large settlement on the banks and up hill from an very wide river that they had crossed intermittently along the way.

Jondalar watched his brother pace as they waited for Jetamio to give birth.

“She’ll be fine,” soothed Jondalar. “Women do this every day.”

“They die everyday doing this too!” snarled Thonolan. “Oh Jondalar! What can I do? I can’t- . . . .”

Suddenly Thonlan’s jaw dropped in shock.

Jondalar looked to see what had shocked his brother so badly.

Flying towards them were a par of Doni and their son. The son was dressed in pants and parka of unusual design, but the Doni were both completely nude. One took on the appearance of the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. The other appeared to him as a flathead doe. Looking down hill, he could see that he was not the only one experiencing this vision as people were pointing up into the sky,

NOTE: I must admit, it has been more than 20 years since I read Valley of the Horses. So chalk up any changes to butterfly flaps, caused by people coming back in time. Still, I would like to get a little closer to cannon.
Does anyone remember what the Sharamudoi dwellings looked like? Where they stone houses or caves or tents? Was Jetamio birthing in her home, or in a special place set aside for that? Was Those-who-serve-the Mother in the Sharamudoi called Shamud? They were androgynous, weren’t they?
