Chapter 53: Jetamio
Harr and Ayla followed Uba as she flew in a circle.
“That one,” waved Uba, as she pointed out one of the wooden houses on the hill, high above the river.
They other two followed her into a landing next to two men of the Others.
“O Donii! Please don’t take my Jetamio!” begged Thonolan, in the Zelandonii language as he fell to his knees. “Take me, instead!”
“Relax Thonlan, we’re here to save Jetamio, not take her to the spirit world,” assured Ayla, in his native language, as she handed her broom to Harr.
Uba took her wand off the broom and used a sticking charm to securing it behind her ear, while tossing her broom to Harr. She then, started towards the wooden house.
“Look out! The flathead is trying to get in!” shouted Jondalar, in Zelandonii, as he lunged for Uba.
Hearing him yell, she turned, drew her wand and dropped him with a silent stunner. She then opened the door and walked in. The women inside screamed: Jetamio in pain and the others in fright at the sight of a woman of the Clan barging in. In their eyes, Uba was a dangerous animal that had had invaded their birthing. Her lack of clothing only re-enforced their belief that Uba was an animal.
Ayla followed Uba in and when the two women helping with the labor lunged at Uba, the silently put them both in a full-body-bind. Their arms locked to their sides and they fell back. Jetamio’s screams had turned into screams of fright.
“We’re not going to hurt you,” soothed Ayla. “We are here to help”
But Jetamio continued to scream as Harr came in. She didn’t know the Zelandonii language. They had no common language with her. This had not been a problem for Ayla and Luna when they were dead and they had been able to communicate on a soul level. Harr pulled out the trunk and enlarged it, then put the brooms in. He then, pulled out Uba’s dress, helped her into it, and cast a reparo to undo the damage that Uba had done when she’d broken the laces on one side to get out of it. Harr then pulled out one of Luna’s dresses and handed it to Ayla.
“I thought she would be less frightened if you two were dressed,” explained Harr.
“Thonlan, get in here! I need you to translate!” yelled Ayla, as she pulled on the dress.
“Thonolan! There’s a flathead in here!” shouted Jetamio, in her own language.
“Thonlan, tell her that we are healers and we have come to save her and her baby,” commanded Ayla, before she turned to Uba and said: “I think you need to be Luna if we want her to stop screaming in fright.”
“You are right,” signed Uba. “Harr?”
“Jetamio, these three Mudo flew down from the sky,” translated Thonolan into the Sharamudoi tongue. “They claim to be healers that have come to save you. But I think Donii will do anything she wants with you and there is nothing we can do to fight her.
Harr had meanwhile, pulled a flask out of the trunk, put a pale blonde hair in it and handed it to Uba.
“Thonolan! What are you talking about?” grunted Jetamio as another contraction hit. “People don’t fly throu- . . .”
But by then, the polyjuice potion had done it’s work and Uba had transformed into Luna. Whether Jetamio’s protests were cut off by the shock of witnessing Uba’s transformation or by the pain that she was feeling, who can say.
As Harrr propped Tholie and Shamud up agains the wall so that they could see what was going on, Luna ran her wand over Jetamio. Above her an image of the bones of Jetamio’s pelvis and unborn child floated.
“She’s not going to be able to deliver, she’s too narrow,” observed Luna, in English.
“Can’t we dilate her,” asked Ayla. “I have the potion for that.”
“No, the bones of the pelvis are too narrow to let a baby out,” replied Luna, in English. We’re going to have to preform a caesarian.”
Luna ended her spell and turned to Thonolan.
“What happens next is not for the eyes of men,” proclaimed Luna, in Zelandoii. “Go with Harr and and wait outside.”
She then turned to Harr and told him, in English: “Take Thonlan outside and wait unless we call for you.”
Ayla pulled a potion out of the trunk and mimed drinking it before holding it to Jetamio’s mouth. She looked fearfully at the potion and then at Ayla’s and Luna’s eyes before drinking it down. Ayla checked her pulse then turned to Luna.
“This woman thinks she is out,” signed Ayla.
“Luna cast a scourgify on both her hands and Ayla’s before telling her: “No more signs until we’re done.”
She then turned by to their unconscious patient.
“She’s going to bleed when I cut her open but even more-so when I detach the placenta. So be ready with the potions.”
Luna then used a cutting jinx, one that wouldn’t leave an unhealable scar, to cut open Jetamio. Tholie and Shamud both had tears running down their faces as they were helpless to stop this.
Luna then reached inside, pulled out the baby and handed him to Ayla. It still had the cord attached, so she cut it off. Luna then cast another cutting Jinx to detach the placenta. Blood oozed out of the hole in Jetamio’s abdomen! Luna reached into the blood and pulled out the placenta, which she tossed on the floor.
“We need to stop the bleeding!” Luna announced. “Which potion is it?”
“This one,” replied Ayla, as she held up a flask.
Luna cast a silent switching spell that put the contents of the flask inside Jetamio’s stomach. Instantly the bleeding stopped. Luna stuck her wand in the cavity to vanish the blood within, then cast a healing charm to close Jetamio up. Luna, casting this spell with the Elder Wand, left no scar as she healed the wound completely.
“She’s lost a lot of blood,” observed Luna.
“Use this one,” pronounced Ayla, as she held up another potion flask.
Luna cast a switching spell to put the potion inside Jetamio and her paleness instantly became a normal colour.
Now that Jetamio was saved, they turned their attention to her son. Luna pointed her wand at him, but Ayla said:
“There’s no need for that,” said Ayla she picked him up by his feet and swatted his butt. He took a breath and wailed in protest.
The two women smiled at him.
“Jetamio should be awake for this,” announced Ayla.
Luna turned to Jetamio and cast a quick, silent enervate.
Jetamio woke to the sound of her son crying. She tried to sit up. But Ayla handed over the baby to her.
“You did it Luna! I’m alive! We’re alive!” said Jetamio, in Sharamudoi.
Luna vanished all the mess that the birth had caused, then Ayla covered Jetamio in a large fur. Luna then, cast a patronis charm and sent it to Thonolan. The ghostly hare bounded out of the wooden house.
As soon as he got Thonolan out of the house and settled, Harr awoke Jondalar from the stunner, but kept his wand trained on him. Harr didn’t have an language in common with them and had no way of communicating with the two brothers.
“It’s all right, Jondalar,” assured Thonolan, in Zellandonii. “The Donii promised to save her.”
“But there’s a wild flathead on the loose,” protested Jondalar.
“I saw her turn into a woman, right before my eyes,” explained Thonolan. “She’s a Donii. She can take whatever form she wishes.”
“I still don’t like waiting outside,” grumbled Jondalar.
“Neither do I,” agreed Thonolan. “But I feel much safer knowing that Donii, herself is watching over us.”
When they heard the baby cry, Thonolan got up and tried to go in, but Harr grabbed his arm and shook his head.
“Jetamio,” said Harr. Her name was the only word he knew that Thonolan might understand.
A few minutes later, a ghostly hare bounded out of the house and said in Zelandonii:
“It’s alright Thonlan, you can come in now.”
This time, Harr let him pass.
When he entered, Jetamio was looking well and holding a baby. Tholie and Shamud were leaning against the wall, stiff as a board. He would have thought they were dead if he hadn’t spotted eye movement. Luna waved her wand and they were released. They both collapsed to their knees. But Thonolan only had eyes for his mate.
“Thonolan, this is my son, Wilomar,” announced Jetamio.
“Oh, he’s beautiful!” marveled Thonolan.
“Oh, Mut! Mut! Mut! Please forgive me!” Tholie pleaded in Mamutoi, as she knelt before Luna. Shamud was kow-towing, not daring to show hir face to hir Goddess.
“My name in this form is name is Luna. But when I am a woman of the Clan, I am called: Uba.” Luna said, in Mamutoi.
“Why are you two acting like that?” Jetamio. “Everything is fine now.”
“You didn’t see! You didn’t see! She killed you, cut you open like an animal that we’ve hunted, pulled your baby out and brought you back to life!” Tholie proclaimed. “Who but the Mut has the power of life and death?”
“She cut me open?” asked Jetamio. “Seems like that would hurt a lot more if she had. And I might have died, but I’me not dead anymore, thanks to Luna and Ayla.”
Jetamio pulled down the fur to confirm it.
“See. I’m perfectly fine. Not even a scar. There’s not even blood.”
“I’m not Mut,” corrected Luna. “I’m just an ordinary Witch.”
Just then, she transformed back to Uba.
