Note: The chapters on on the Sharamudoi didn’t offer much on Jetamio’s character. They mostly focused on Jondalar. But they helped some.

Chapter 54: Meeting the Clan

“Flathead!” shouted Jondalar.

“Calm down,” scolded Ayla in Zelandonii. “It’s just Uba. And don’t use that word. It’s insulting. She’s not a flathead, she’s a woman of the Clan.”

“She looks like a flathead to me!” countered Jondalar.

“We need to go back to our Clan,” signed Uba.

“Don’t we need to wait for her to recover?” Harr signed.

“It’s not going to be be very restful if we keep having to deal with people like him and them,” signed Uba as she pointed to Jondalar, Tholie and Shamud.

“We could take her back with us,” signed Ayla.

“This woman was planning to do that,” signed Uba. “And Thonlan too.”

“Right,” signed Harr before touching Jetamio’s fur with his wand and saying: Portus!”

He, Ayla and Uba all grabbed the fur that was covering Jetamio.

“Thonlan, grab the fur,” commanded Ayla, in Zelandonii.

Both Zelandonii brothers grabbed the fur and they all vanished as the port-key activated.

They reappeared in Harr’s hearth in their cave.

“It’s a whole pack of flatheads!” shouted Jondalar.

“Lower your voice,” admonished Ayla, in Zellandonii. “They don’t like it when we speak out loud at all, much less shouting.

“Where are we? How did we get here?” asked Thonolan, as he looked around.

“This is the cave where our Clan lives,” replied Ayla. “We used magic to get you here. But perhaps I should explain. Can your translate for Jetamio?”

Thonolan nodded his assent.

“Luna and I lived this life before. In this other life, Luna was your mate and later I became your second mate. But this happened long after Jetamio and her son died in childbirth. After we died, Luna came up with a way for a group of us to come back and live our lives over again. Jetamio wanted to come back, but you did not. So, when it was time for Jetamio to die, we came and saved her, causing her other self to arrive in this life.”

“Oh come on! You don’t expect me to believe this!” shouted Jondalar.

“It’s true,” said Jetamio, who had been listening to Thonolan’s translations into Sharamudoi. “I died, and after I died I met you and these other people that were in your life after I died. I asked Luna to bring me back. I saw her earlier, but then she turned into that woman.”

Jetamio pointed to Uba.

After Thonlan finished translating, Ayla answered:

“Things did not go as planned. Luna came back. But her spirit is inhabiting the body of Uba, a woman of the Clan. I made a potion that can turn her back into Luna for a short time. But the potion takes a whole moon to brew. So she can’t use the potion all the time.”

“We haven’t eaten in two days,” signed Harr. “Why don’t you go get our children, and this woman will start a meal for us?”

Ayla translated for Thonolan, who in turn did so for Jetamio.

“I’ve going to go get my children. Harr will start cooking a meal for us. Stay here with him.”

“This woman needs to get her children and prepare a meal for them and her mate also,” signed Uba, before walking off.

Harr and Thonlan had only gotten a fire started before Ayla was back with her three children. She took over the meal prep. Although she knew that Harr was, unlike a man of the Clan, perfectly capable to cooking for them, they both knew she was the better cook. She was still cooking when Broud and Zeen entered the cave and walked over to their hearth.

“Why are there more Others at your hearth?” Broud signed at Harr.

“The woman of the Others nearly died birthing the baby,” signed Harr. “This Weez-Ur and the medicine women flew to their . . . their home that is not a cave to save her. Once we had done so, we used travel (port-key) magic to bring her and her mate back to this man’s hearth to recover. The other man is the male sibling of the woman of the Others’ mate.”

“Do they wish to join our Clan?” Bround signed.

“That has not been discussed with them yet,” signed Harr.

‘“Introduce this Leader to them,” signed Broud.

“This man does not know the mouth sounds they use to talk,” signed Harr. “He will need his mate to translate.”

Broud nodded his assent.

“Ayla, come here,” signed Harr.

Instantly, Ayla stood up from her squat at the fire and stepped in front of Broud and Harr.

“The Leader needs you to translate so he may be introduced to the new Others,” signed Harr.

“The man, Thonlan will have to translate the mouth sounds that this woman knows into his mate’s mouth sounds,” signed Ayla.

After Broud nodded, Harr began the introductions:

“This is Broud, the Leader of Broud’s Clan,” signed Harr. “Also with him is Zeen, the mog-ur of this Clan.”

“This is Broud, the Leader of our Clan,” translated Ayla. “Standing next to him is Zeen the one-who-serves the spirits for this Clan.”

“Broud, this is Thonlan of the Others, his male sibling, Dyondar, and Thonlan’s mate, Mio.” Ayla signed.

Thonolan and Jondalar tried to offer their hands in greeting. But Ayla warned them off.

“No, don’t do that,” warned Ayla, in Zelandonii. “People of the Clan can’t speak without using their hands.”

“You may stay until the woman recovers,” signed Broud. “After that, if you wish to join this Leader’s Clan, this Leader will need to discuss it with the men of this Clan before this Leader makes a decision.”

And with that, Broud and Zeen walked away.

Once the Leader and mog-ur had been introduced to the guests, others felt freer to come over and introduce themselves. Creb and his mate were first.

“Thonlan, it is good to see you again,” signed Creb. “And you too, Mio. You look very different when you are alive.

Iga then stepped forward and took Jondalar’s hands in hers to give formal greetings. First she tried her native Sungaean language. But he didn’t seem to understand. So she switched to Mamutoi:

“Do you speak Mamutoi?” asked Iga, as she continued to stare up into Jondalar’s eyes like she wanted to Share Pleasures with him.

“Speak little,” replied Jondalar.

“I greet you in the name of Luna and the Great Cave Bear,” greeted Iga, again. “I am Iga, Mammut of Broud’s Clan of the Cave Bear. Though my title in this Clan in actually, Clanluna, mated to Creb, the retired first ranked Mog-Ur or Mammut of the Clan and weez-ur. Mother to the weez-urs Lun and Oud.”

“Me Jondalar from Zelandonii, boy of Thonolan,” replied Jondalar in his best Mamutoi.

“You speak Mamutoi?” asked Jetamio. “E speak Mamutoi a small!”

“This woman knows Mamutoi too,” said Ayla, in Mamutoi. “So does Luna. Though, she can’t speak it while she is Uba, only understand it.”

“But if you are planning to stay here, you need to learn Clan signs,” said Iga.

“Me not knowing if me want live here,” replied Thonolan.

“Well, I am,” announced Jetamio in Sharamudoi. “I want to stay here.”

“You can’t be serious!” snarled Jondalar. “You want to live with a pack of flatheads?”

“Thonolan . . . I died . . . I died and went to the afterlife,” explained Jetamio. “While there, I had contact with my loved ones, including you. And your loved ones, including your mates after me, Luna and Ayla and their mates, like Creb. I died . . . my life amongst my birth people is over. These are my people now. I want to learn to be a flathead woman . . . to learn their ways of talking and their ways.”
