Chapter 56: Dyondar departs
When Ayla returned to the cave, she went to Bar’s hearth and asked Uba:
“Did it work?” Ayla signed.
Uba placed her hand over Ayla’s abdomen and closed her eyes for a few seconds, before opening and announcing:
“Yes.”
Overcome with joy, Ayla hugged Uba. When she released her adopted sister, Uba signed:
“Are you going to tell him?”
“He wants to go back to his people. He calls us flatheads. Let him go back to his people,” signed Ayla.
Broud approached Harr’s hearth.
“Do the Others wish to join our Clan?” signed Broud.
“Thonlan and Mio do wish to join our Clan,” signed Harr. “Dyondar does not and wishes to return to his own people.”
“Then the men of this Clan must have a meeting to discuss this. Come,” signed Broud.
The men’s meeting was long and tedious. In the end, Broud called the whole Clan together for an announcement:
“The man of the Others, Thonlan and his mate, Mio, have asked to join our Clan. Mio’s son is too weak to hold his head up, But the medicine women assure this Leader that this is normal for a baby of the Others. So Ursus will decide whether the child lives or dies. Zeen?”
Zeen the mog-ur gestured and the cave bear came out of his cave, she walked up to the Clan, sniffed each one and moved on. When she got to Jetamio, she sniffed her baby intently, but then moved on. Thonolan let out the breath he had been holding as the bear abled away.
“Ursus has decided,” signed Broud. “The child will live and be accepted into the Clan. The Women Ovra and Ire have agreed to adopt Thonlan and Mio as their children. They do not yet know how to speak properly, but they are learning. The mog-ur will now lead the ceremony to adopt them into the Clan.”
Once they were adopted and named in the Clan, Broud had more to say:
“The woman, Mio is a woman-who-hunts. Thonlan and his mate will have the status of women-who-hunt until they have successfully hunted with a Clan spear in the traditional way. Until then, they will be limited to slings, bows, and throwing spears.”
After the ceremony, there was a feast. Thonlan and Jetamio were shown where their new hearth was, deep in the cave. The fire circle stones had already been runed and charged so the smoke would be guided to the ceiling and out of the cave.
“I guess it’s time for me to go,” grumbled Jondalar in Zelandonii.
“I guess so . . . .I’m going to miss you brother,” said Thonolan.
“You could still go with me, you and Jetamio,” replied Jondalar. “At least if you were with the Sharamudoi you’d be closer and Jetamio was with her people.”
“These are our people now,” countered Thonolan. “I’m no longer Thonolan of the Zelandonii. I am Thonlan, man of the Clan.
“What will I tell mother?” Jondalar asked.
“Tell her I’m happy,” said Thonlan.
The two brothers shared a hug. When it was over, Thonlan stepped back and signed:
“Walk with Ursus.”
Harr then handed Jondalar the fur that had brought him here and touched it with his wand. Jondalar vanished.
As new members of the Clan, they had their own hearth. But they didn’t get to sleep there tonight. Instead, Thonlan was sent to watch the children of the Clan while Mio was invited to the women’s ceremony.
The next morning, Thonlan stepped out of the cave with Mio’s son in his arms, only to find her naked and asleep on the ground surrounded by all the other women of the Clan also asleep in the same state of undress. Thonlan wondered what the women had gotten up to that would leave them like this. Ayla opened her eyes and looked at him.
“Good morning,” signed Ayla, as she sat up.
“Nice day,” signed back Thonlan, as Ayla searched for her wrap amongst the other’s thrown carelessly to the ground last night.
“The men should be back soon,” signed Ayla. “This woman needs to start the morning tea for this woman’s family.”
Thonlan nodded. He should do that too. MIo would probably appreciate a cup of tea.
“This woman has been thinking about forgoing the root,” signed Uba.
“It would be a good time for you to have another child,” agreed Ayla. “This woman was going to stop at many (three). But when Dyondar visited, this woman couldn’t resist the chance to make Mariza again.”
“That’s the thing,” signed Uba. “This woman would like to have another daughter, one with Luna’s Clan memories. But this woman fears making another Mara.”
“This woman would not be afraid of that,” signed Ayla. “Mara was the result of a particular set of circumstances that we can avoid. In particular, if you don’t let Thonlan defeat your totem, she’ll never be the Mara we knew. This woman would offer to let Harr defeat your totem, but you said you wanted her to have your Clan memories.”
“You are right,” signed Uba. “As long as the man who defeats this woman’s totem is Clan, she can never be Mara. And this woman is certain Bar would enjoy defeating her totem. Only . . . this woman guesses if she is going to have another baby, you can stop making shape changing (polyjuice) potion for her.”
“Harr and Creb will not be happy about that,” signed Ayla. “They like going hunting with Luna. This woman supposes Iga could take the potion for them.”
Ayla’s son Jaymz, took an interest in her bow. After teaching him how to shoot with it, he showed an unusual talent for archery. So Uba made him a longbow sized for him. She knew if he started at an early age he would build up the muscles to be better than her with a longbow when he was full grown. Besides, building up those muscles would also make him better able to hunt with a Clan spear.
The Clan’s newest members were making good progress in learning the Clan sign language. And by the time winter arrived, they could speak it fairly well.
When the longest night of the year arrived, it was now obvious that Ayla, Uba and Zeen’s cave bear were all pregnant. But not so heavily so that they would not be able to participate in the Winter Festival. But for the newest couple in the Clan, this ceremony merited some discussion.
“Are you sure you will be able to do this?” asked Thonlan, in the Sharamudoi language. “Amongst the Zelandonii, Sharing Pleasures with a Clan person was the worse thing you could do. It was considered worse if you were a woman and did that.”
“The Sharamudoi feel the same way,” agreed Mio. “But now that I’ve gotten to know these men, I can’t think of any of them I would refuse if they gave me the Signal . . . if you gave them permission of course.”
“That’s the thing, participating in this ceremony means we’ll be giving the entire Clan permission to Share with our mates,” said Thonlan.
“The Sharamudoi have similar rites to this Winter Festival” observed Mio. “Don’t the Zellandonii have something like this too?”
“We do,” agreed Thonlan. “It’s just . . . this is different . . . this is with the Clan.”
“We are Clan now,” admonished Mio. “This is the life we chose. These are the people we chose. We’re no longer Thonolan and Jetamio. We’re Thonlan and Mio now, members of Broud’s Clan.”
“This man suppose to be correct,” signed Thonlan.
