When Jondalar stopped spinning, he found himself in Jetamio’s house back where the Sharamudoi lived. The woman cooking in here looked familiar.

“Jondalar! Where have you been?” Tholie asked.

“Harr used magic to bring us to their cave,” replied Jondalar.

“I saw it happen, but I don’t know how it was done,” said Tholie. “Where are Jetamio and Thonolan? Are they safe?”

“They decided to stay with the Clan, to become members of it,” explained Jondalar.

“Do they live with Mudo?” asked Tholie. “She really surprised me when she killed Jetamio and brought her back to life, then turned into a flathead. DO they have more pet flatheads?”

“They are all flatheads,” confessed Jondalar. “Though, they prefer to be called Clan. Besides, Ayla and Harr, whom you met, I only saw one other human woman there. Some of them were even abominations of mixed spirits. Ayla has two children that are like that.”

“She doesn’t!” gasped Tholie. “I hope you didn’t Share Pleasures with such a shameful woman!”

“Well, actually . . .” Jondalar blushed, rather than admit that he had Shared himself with two different women that regularly Shared themselves with Clan men.

“No!” gasped Tholie as she guessed what Jondalar was holding back. She ran out the door and called out:

“Markeno! Jondalar’s back!”

Markeno came running at that news.

“What did you say?” Markeno asked.

“Jondalar’s back,” repeated Tholie. “He’s been living with a pack of flatheads.”

Markeno followed her into the house.

“What’s this about you living with flatheads?” Markeno asked.

“Clan. They call themselves Clan,” corrected Jondalar.

“And what happened to Jetamio and Thonolan?” Markeno asked.

“They chose to join the Clan and stay with them,” explained Jondalar.

“Do you know where this was?” Markeno asked.

“Let’s see,” said Jondalar, as he stepped outside and noted the position of the sun. “They said that they traveled that direction to get here.”

He pointed West North West.

“So the way back to them must be that way,” guessed Jondalar, as he pointed East South East. But I got the impression that it was a long way away . . . too far to travel there easily without magic.”

“And this magic of theirs is real,” asked Markeno.

“I told you it was real,” scolded Tholie. “I saw it myself!”

“Yes, it’s real,” admitted Jondalar. “And it’s not just the three we met here. I think all of the Clan can do magic, or at least, all the men. I saw most of them doing magic at one time or another. In fact, Ayla is one of the weaker ones when it comes to magic. She had to shout incantations to do magic. But the men would just wave their wands and make it happen.”

Jondalar told his story several times to various members of the Sharamudoi. People reacted to his story with horror. Horror that he’d lived amongst flatheads, that there were human women who were Sharing Pleasures with or worse mating flatheads. Horror at his stories of the abominations of mixed spirits he’d seen.

Jondalar leaned in to kiss her.
“I can’t! I can’t!” protested Carolio as she pushed him away. “I’m sorry. I can’t sully myself with a man who is willing to Share himself with women who give birth to abominations. What if I have an abomination because I got too close to you?”

“You’re going, aren’t you,” accused Serenio.

“I need to go back to my people,” replied Jondalar. “I’m Jondalar of the Zelandonii. I belong with my people.”

“What will you tell them about Thonolan?” asked Serenio.

“I’ve seen how your people feel about my stories of the Clan,” said Jondalar. “Better that our mother think he died . . .”

Serenio nodded at this.

“You could come with me?” suggested Jondalar.

“No. Just as you belong with your people, I belong with mine,” replied Serenio.

Even after Jondalar left, the Sharamudoi constantly talked about the fate of Jetamio.

“Jetamio was one of us!” growled Dolando. “She was one of us and now she’d suffering, surrounded by a whole pack of flatheads that Force her over and over and I’ll bet her foreign mate doesn’t even lift a finger to protect her from the deprivations of the flatheads!”

“What can we do about it?”

“I’ll tell you what we can do!” shouted Dolando. “We know the approximate direction of the flatheads. I say we send scouts that way to try to find them. And when we do, I say we send everyone who’s willing to fight to go wipe out that pack of flatheads and rescue Jetamio!
