This was a colder than usual winter. And elderly Zoug did not survive it.

Ayla and Uba’s babies were amongst those born. They were named: Mariza and Jzini.

By now, Ayla had noticed that Mio walked with a slight limp, the result of a childhood broken leg that had not healed properly. And so, Uba vanished the bones of that leg, and Ayla gave her skelagrow potion to regrow the bones, just as they had done for Creb, years before.

When Spring arrived there was much work for the Clan to do. This year would be the Clan Gathering and Broud’s Clan needed to prepare.

Ayla and Uba continued to teach Ayla’s children magic and put them to work tending the magical garden. Their sister, Abba, daughter of Iza, joined them in this as she apparrently had the gift for magical Herbalogy, as well as her mother’s medicine woman Clan memories. Abba became a woman and after 1st rites was mated to Vorn. Durciza was becoming concerned that she was not yet a woman. Lili was starting to learn to read, as was Jaymz.

Ayla’s daughters both had partial Clan memories derived from Ayla and her previous life. This helped them with learning things, even magical things.

Broud wanted to make sure everyone’s manhood hunt was done before the Clan Gathering and Thonlan was first. Before it got cold, he had been practicing running with a heavy Clan spear. During the winter Ayla had fed him a regine of potions that would increase his strength and agility. So his manhood hunt was successful and he was recognized as a Hunter and man of the Clan. Mio had decided that being a woman-who-hunts was enough for her and didn’t train to use a Clan spear.

Once the manhood hunts were done, Broud had a massive series of hunts with magic allowed. Each time, he had to stop the Clan when they had killed too much for the women to process. And there were a lot fewer women than hunters. But they managed to store up enough to tide the Clan through winter before they even left for the Clan Gathering, enough to make a sizable gift to the host Clan.

There were several people who would be staying at the cave while they were at the Clan Gathering. Brun and his mate Ebra were staying behind. Grod was staying behind. Though his mate, Ire and her sons were all going. Only one was not yet a man. The other three hoped to find mates at the Clan Gathering. Droov and Bona were staying behind. Iza was also staying behind.

The Clan had grown too large to fit in the magical tents that Harr had in Luna’s trunk. So Broud had lean-tos for the other members of the Clan brought out. When he tested them to see if they were still usable, Uba looked at them and remembered the tipis she had made in her previous life. She waved her wand and transfigured the lean-tos into tipis.
Everything the Clan needed for the Clan Gathering was put in Luna’s trunk, which Harr then shrunk down to fit in a fold of his wrap. So the Clan was able to travel much faster.

Before they left, Broud laid down the law. Until they returned from the Clan Gathering, none of the Others’ clothes would be allowed, only Clan wraps. The women-who-hunt would not be allowed to use or even touch hunting weapons of any kind. Until they returned they would do their best to look like a normal Clan. Ayla had lived under similar restrictions at the previous Clan Gathering and had warned the Others about this. All the women’s Other clothes and hunting weapons were stored away in Harr’s trunk.

Broud in the lead, the Clan set off for the Clan Gathering. As evening approached, they stopped to make camp. Harry pulled the magical tents from Luna’s trunk and set them up. Then he pulled the tipis out, complete with poles. Ayla, Uba and Iga remembered how to set them up and taught the other women of the Clan how to do this. There was no need to gather firewood. Harr had brought plenty in the trunk along with food to cook on it.

The next morning, they set off again. It was a five day journey to the location of the Clan gathering. No one had ever visited this Clan before. But their Clan memories told them where to go.

After seven days, a phase of the Moon, they finally arrived at the Clan Gathering. As soon as they arrived, everyone in the other Clans turned to stare at them.

A man of the Clan moved through the crowd to confront Broud.

“This man is Zorg, Leader of the host Clan,” signed the man.

“This Leader is Broud.”

“You have brought the Others to the Clan Gathering,” signed Zorg.

“They are members of this Leader’s Clan,” signed Broud. “The woman, Ayla is the 1st Ranked Medicine Woman. She was recognized as such at the previous Clan Gathering. The other two women of the Others came to our Clan when they needed healing. One brought her mate. After the women were healed, they chose to turn their backs on the Others and join our Clan. This Leader has accepted them as such. The man of the Others, Thonlan, has been a valuble Hunter of our Clan, as has the man, Harr who joined our Clan at the previous Clan Gathering.”

The two men are the Clan stared at each other. Each was a Leader of his Clan. Zorg has status because his Clan was hosting the Clan Gathering. Broud was the Leader of the Clan that had been 1st ranked at the previous Clan Gathering. He had the 1st Ranked Medicine Woman. His former Mog-Ur had been the 1st ranked Mog-Ur and Broud was confident that Zeen would be able to retain that title, even in the face of the flute playing mog-ur. In the end, Broud’s confidence in his Clan won this contest of wills. Zorg backed down.

“Broud’s Clan is welcome at the Clan Gathering,” signed Zorg. “You may set up your lean-tos on the far side of the Gathering.”

Broud nodded his acknowledgement and lead his clan through the crowd. As they passed through, everyone stared at this strange Clan with a man of the Others and three women of the Others, at the several deformed members of this Clan, at The Mog-Ur, who now walked normally and sported a shiny arm where none had been before and a strange eye that moved independant of the other.

Once they had arrived at the designated area, They began unloading the trunk of the things they would need to set up camp. Harr laid out the magical tents and used his wand to make each one erect themselves. Ayla led the women in setting up the tipis. The people from other Clans continued to stare at this strange Clan.

Once they had camp set up and Broud’s Clan were all fed, they were free to socialize with the people of the other Clans. That was when Harr notices all the women trying to encourage not him, but Creb to give them the Signal. At past Clan Gatherings, he had taught how to give women Needs and how to Relieve them. Many of the old and middle aged women he had demonstrated this with wanted him to Relieve them again. And quite a few young women were courious about the former Mog-Ur.

(I’ll bet Iga Loves this!) thought Harr.

In general, the members of Other Clans were cautious around the Others, and Harr and Thonlan, in particular.

The next day, the competitions began. And during the sling competion, a man from another Clan hurled his stone at supersonic speed.

KRACK!

Creb appoached the man in question.

“How did you learn sling magic?” signed Creb.

“This man learning it by watching you at the previous Clan gathering,” signed the man.

“Can anyone else in your Clan do this sling magic?” signed Creb.

“Several of us can,” signed the man.

“The ability to do sling magic means you are a weez-ur,” signed Creb. “And when this weez-ur chanels magic through his wand, he can make things happen.”

Creb held out his wand and made the tip light up.

All the men stared in amazement.

“How did you learn to do that?” signed another man.

“This weez-ur was taught,” signed Creb. “And he can teach you. But Harr is much better at teaching wand magic.”

“So this kind of magic is not just for mog-urs?” asked a man.

“No. Being a weez-ur is a different skill than being a mog-ur,” signed Creb. “There are even woman who can do this kind of magic and other kinds too. A woman who can do magic is called weech.”

“Women can do magic? Who ever heard of such a thing?” signed a man.

“It may be related to medicine woman magic, as both of our weeches are medicine women too,” signed Creb.

“Uba!” called out Vun, as he waded though the crowd to get to her. “Uba!”

“Vun! How are you?” signed Uba as she enveloped her former mate in a hug. She’d been a clanluna so long that she didn’t have an instinct to be cautious. Vun hugged her back.

“Where have you been?” Vun signed, after she released him.

“This woman returned to Broud’s Clan,” signed Uba.

“Well now you are returning to this man’s hearth,” waved Vun. “This man had to endure years without a mate.”

“This woman most certainly is not returning to your hearth,” waved Uba, angrily.

“You are this man’s woman,” waved Vun.

“This woman is not your woman!” signed Uba.

Vun grabbed her arm to restrain her and called out for his Leader’s assistance:

“Zab! Zab!”
